I didn't know he was from Wales until recently lol. He came to Bath in England around 2008/9, Then to London, Then he moved to Brighton in 2013.. Which is where I met him busking with his band/buddies. Now I know, If you listen carefully you can hear a welsh twinge here n there in his accent.. But it's quite far removed since he's spent so much time in England. It's a mix of South coast and West country with a splash of Welsh 😂
@Skittenmeow
@Skittenmeow 9 ай бұрын
@@helenHTIDI remember one of my Welsh friends saying that the Welsh accent and Aussie accent also very easily soak in other accents... they quite easily take on hints of everywhere we've stayed, and every person important in our lives. I've always been asked where my accent is from, and people struggle to believe I've spent the vast majority of my life in Australia...as have both my parents and 3 of my grandparents. But I've had good friends from many countries, so maybe why I get "are you English? Scottish? Canadian? European? Welsh?? Irish...umm Scandinavia somewhere??" 😅 Problem is my other siblings get the same, despite having very different friends, and I sound so much like my sister (who I'm not close with) that even her good friends can't tell us apart on the phone. So maybe we've all influenced each other?

@@SkittenmeowI've also found that the Midwest US accent (or lack thereof) has a tendency to absorb flavor too. Didn't notice it until coming home for leave from the Navy. Was stationed in South Carolina and my dorm mate was from Louisiana. Came home sounding like a mix of both to everyone else

@@thathighguy6980As an elderly Welsh woman this has happened so many times in my life. As a young student myself in Bath I clearly remember ,on a visit home, being asked by a taxi driver what part of Wiltshire I was from.😂 I had only been away for a few months so it came as a bit of a shock. I certainly hadn't noticed it myself.I then worked in London for years and picked up that accent .I have been back in Wales for many years now and my accent is back where it started. I notice that if I talk to someone with a London accent I slip into it myself.I am always worried that they will think I am being rude. Goodness knows what will happen when I'm totally demented.😅😊

Ren, I know it’s overwhelming to hear all the praise, but “Hi Ren” hit so deep because no one was expecting it. It was a shock that made people feel deeply, perhaps for the first time in years. It cut past everyone’s defenses. We all carry grief and pain, it’s a gift to feel it and get some of it out. That’s why people are so grateful to you, beyond your amazing musical talents. You’d be an incredible actor if you choose to take that on.

For Ren: In regards to not every song you release now having a poignancy similar to "Hi Ren".... I would like to think I share this in common with most people. I don't look for poignancy in music. I look for emotion. Songs can have a direct and important message, or they can just be a fun flex.... but if it makes me feel something, then I'm on board. Yes, "Hi Ren" was an important and relatable introspective look into 'our inner demons', but to me what was more important, personally, was that it invoked strong emotion that I could relate to.... the message itself, was lesser to an extent, for me. I am just as ok listening to "Hi Ren" as I am to "Animal Flow". Creatively very different, but both songs have a strong heartbeat that the listener can tap into.

Agreed. Not every song will be a mega hit, and that's okay. As long as it comes from a place of honesty, people will gravitate to it. Sometimes a song is a mega hit because of other factors like timing and what's going on in the world. I look for integrity and artistic honesty more than some mega hit formula.

Ren should be very very proud of all of his music. He worries that all of his music isn't at the level of Hi Ren and the tales, but they are, just in a different way. I'm a midwife and my job is amazing but also stressful and sometimes heartbreakingly sad. On my drive to work I've been listening to Ren's music and the ones that are just fun, like Losing it, lift me up for the day, while ones relating to his suffering, like Crutch, put my worries into perspective and then when I get home after a hard shift I do listen to Hi Ren for some answers. It's all important and without that variety there wouldn't be that range of support. 😁😁😁

Knox & Ren - this was such a pleasure to watch! Such an intelligent, thoughtful, deep and vulnerable conversation. Ren, as a fellow brain fogger, you killed it. 💪🏻 And Knox, so many times when a reaction channel does an interview, I cringe at the way they talk over the artist or are unable to navigate and guide the flow of the interview - you asked interesting questions with depth and curiosity, then gave Ren the space to explore the answers, never talking over or edging in, and kept it flowing so well. Could really sense the respect and love coming from from both of you. Loved it. Thank you ❤

This was amazing start to finish. Loved every second. I actually never heard of Ren until Crypt did a reaction to Hi Ren not long ago. Basically, I binged every song Ren had on YT/Spotify & now I can say proudly he’s my favorite musician of all time. Super relatable music. I lost my wife/best friend in February of this year so I feel blessed to have Ren’s music there to help me through all this. It’s life altering to lose someone you love. Freckled Angels/Hi Ren/Chalk Outlines are my top 3 but all of them are masterful in their own way. I don’t know what else to say except thank You both for 90 minutes of happiness. Much love from Oregon, USA.

I literally just before watching this, watched someone react to Illest of our time and say, why isn’t this deep and meaningful like Hi Ren and had to comment to say, exactly what you just said; 1) life isn’t all about deep and meaningful, sometimes it’s fun and free flowing 2) no one needs Hi Ren 2. People are primed to want to consume things they like over and over until everything is a jaded xerox! It is this mentality that differentiates AI music from Human music for me, as the next timeless classic is not what you expect to hear rather than an amalgam of popular or trending facets! Keep it up both of you! ❤

That’s a really astute comment. People tend to expect to get in into a particular groove with musicians and bands they like but listening to your next new Ren track is a bit like getting mugged. You tune in expecting one thing and get totally turned over by getting smashed with something totally different. It can be unsettling but it’s also fascinating.
@alanbeesby2220
@alanbeesby2220 Жыл бұрын
@@supertuscans9512 thanks! 😊 what is so funny, is that people don’t otherwise consume music in this way! We are often highly eclectic and will listen to songs from different genres, but for some reason we expect artists to “stay in their lane” as far as composition goes! Would anyone have really cared if Prince had released Manic Monday instead of the Bangles? Who knows! But he gave them the song as it didn’t sound enough like a Prince song and yet as consumers lots of people will have heard and liked both. So whether it “sounds” like them or not, doesn’t actually matter! Constricting composition in this way really make a very narrow passage for an artist to work in, for no good reason it’s good to see artists like Ren are not concerned with this abstraction! 👍👏

14:32 "I don't want it to be outcome dependent" Knox, I don't know if you'll see my comment, seeing how many comments you get, but I really wanted to thank Ren for saying what he said here. I've tagged him a few times, but I don't think he ever saw it, which I understand. I recently wrote my first novel, which is a Fantasy Novel, and I started writing Book Two, but became very frustrated at the lack of interest in my book, which I self-published. I shouldn't have gotten frustrated, knowing that self-publishing almost never works, but I really thought word of mouth would've at least generated a decent amount of interest, but when it didn't, I got depressed, and stopped writing. It had been over a year since I had written anything, but when I watched your interview with Ren, when he said that, something in my brain clicked, and I realized how foolish I was being, and just like that I was working on Book Two again. Well, I just recently finished Book Two, and now my friend, who has been editing college students writings, for many years now for free, volunteered to edit both my books (I edited the first one myself, so it still needs some work, as it's very hard to edit your own writing, but I did the best I could, and felt I did a decent job). Anyway, I'm including a special thanks to Ren in my book, and I've also narrated it here too. It's all in a Playlist, and I even used a couple of Ren's songs as intro and outro music. I use intro and outro music on almost every chapter, along with background music, and after discovering Ren, thanks to 'Hi Ren', I really wanted to use some of his music. Fortunately, I found two Chapters where two of his songs really fit the theme of the Chapter (Murderer, and GIRLS!). Just wish he knew that I used them, as well as how much he helped me to finish writing Book Two. I plan on writing Book Three sometime next year. I also hope he'll give it a listen sometime, as I know he likes Fantasy Literature (I know he loved 'The Hobbit'. So did I). If you're into D&D, or just fantasy in general, I hope you'll check it out too, as I'd love to chat with both of you in the comments, anytime : ) So here's hoping that you see my comment here, and let him know that thanks to him, I was able to finish writing my book.

My son is about your guys' age, and I am so glad that you are talking about the trauma young men are going through. As a Mum, my son does tell me some of the despair he goes through, but I know he spares me the worst. All I can say is that yours is the 'jilted generation'. Brought up during the aspirational 90s when you were encouraged to follow your dreams and were told that they were reachable - just work hard. Only to find when you have grown up, that the board game has totally changed. Zero hours contracts, no housing, fear of bringing children into this seemingly doomed world - many don't or won't. There's a wrongly held belief that your generation never had it so good, and it so untrue, or at least, there is such a big flip side to this idea. I will never forget my sons friends who have taken their lives, mashed up their brains with drugs, or ended up developing mental illness and being put into mental health care. Often the most vulnerable to depression and suicide ,are also the most enlightened, beautiful, kind, loving, considerate, and intelligent people. In ' Hi Ren' I recognised so many of the conversations that my son has in his head too. I feel we urgently need to bring young people's mental health out onto the table. Ren and Knox do mention that they are musicians, and not mental health workers. But still, I felt such relief to hear the words spoken out loud in ' hi Ren'. This gives me hope. Thanks, you two brave and talented men.

This interview was pretty long but it felt like nothing and i do struggle listening to people for a longer period of time (Adhd Kid here as well). Ok, i spent half of it just crying cause your story just crushed me. Hearing this right after listening to the song "For Joe" for the 10th time, without really knowing the backstory is so heartbreaking, i can only imagine how you must've felt.. and i am so flashed by how strong you are emotionally... It just takes my breath, cause i myself feel so fragile sometimes, like i couldn't go on. I totally understand how Ren could have thrust imposter syndrome upon himself. I'm one of the many who discovered his work through "Hi Ren", but I've found myself enjoying more and more of his work. I understand how HE could FEEL that, but I cant agree. The Hunger is nuts, absolutely incredible display of rapping techniques. Animal Flow is a great rhythmic banger, it's very different but still has his fingerprint. I just hope he doesn't hamstring himself for fear of public judgement. Artists experiment, sometimes releases wont hit the mark. Some of the most widely respected artists have flops. At the end of the day what does that really matter? People will explore a body of work and pick and choose what they like. No artist has solely released hits which are universally liked.

That's what's so good about lyrics....words trigger different emotions in different people. Music and lyrics have been very important to me throughout my life, another form of oxygen really. I love the way Ren plays with lyrics, he takes well recognised tropes and then flips them. He also talks about issues that touch everyone.It's no surprise to hear Ren say how much time and effort goes into putting the music, the lyrics and the visuals together. I love art and creativity and Ren's take on modern art was interesting. I have a similar opinion (lol) but what annoys me is you get people talking how deep it is and special, when really anyone could go out and do something different if they were given the space and the money. The thing I love about art is that I have the belief that everyone can do it and everyone should do it because it's a great way of expressing yourself. Whether that be painting, poetry, writing, music, acting etc. I love how humble and down to earth Ren is and I hope fame doesn't change him one bit. I hope he maintains that gentle dance that helps him control his demons. I know what Ren is saying about the medical industry, but I can't thank the NHS enough for what they've done for me during my lifetime. They saved my life when I was a little baby treating me for a pyloric stenosis back in 1959 and then again last year having a major operation for my Crohn's. The nurses, stoma team and doctors in Jimmies, Leeds were amazing. With Ren's illness, I get the feeling you wouldn't care if you died, because if sleep is the only time you get away from your pain and your demons then it becomes a dark attractive option. I went through that with my Crohn's when it had gone on for a year and it dawned on me it wasn't going away. Great interview by the way. Relaxed and chilled.

@@francesdoll4039 i agree completely but more so its authentic connections that are missing. You could argue that with the onset of Social media and the Internet there are more ways than ever to connect to people but we don't seem to be doing so in a meaningful way. For me Popular music has had little to recommend it for the last 5 years or more. Barring the odd decent tune .I can't tell who is putting what out as it all blends into the same meaningless noise. The flashy music videos full of money, beautiful people and luxury lifestyles all seem inane and unrelatable. I think Ren has maybe come along at the perfect time given the last 3 years of turbulence, difficulties and disenchantment. People want genuine music that touches on matters close to their hearts. They want to know they are not isolated in their struggles,its not just them that feels like life is an uphill battle sometimes. Ren has a great gift for communication of abstract concepts and relating them back in a brilliant way. Its just amazing to see people of all ages be so invigorated and passionate about his work. Having said that not every song has to be deep and meaningful theres a lot to be said for pure joyful energy and a banging tune as well. What a wonderful interview! So much focus on the craft. I relate to Ren so much as a poet, multi-genre musician, ADHD person, and rebel. What a friggin' inspiration. Keep shining bright, my dude. ✨✨✨

Fascinating listening to both of you! Ren your story is amazing and your creativity draws even a nearly 70 y/o in. I've never enjoyed or wanted to listen to rap but your insight, clever wordplay, rhythms, voice, and production techniques blow me away! May your career be successful and your journey meaningful. Thank you for your hopeful message. Knox, I love your ability to translate the intricacies of these amazing artists. Your breakdowns help an old man who can't listen and interpret bars fast enough. You are helping me enjoy a genre that I normally would avoid with your passion and insightful interpretations of the complicated lyrics these amazing artists produce. Don't stop!

Loved listening to both of you. I'm a retired elementary school teacher. Probably not your usual listener. Knox, your breakdown of so many artist's music has helped me to appreciate rap. Your music is great. Ren, I love your music also. You both seem like 2 nice guys. Why did it take me so long to realize and appreciate that rap is just poetry put to rhythm and/or music? Like with any musical style, most of it is simplistic and meant for quick consumption. You two are exceptions. You both have the gift of communication through rap and song. I'll be watching to see where your music takes you. Keep persevering! ❤❤
