German engineers at the time certainly made some beautiful weapons. Edit: I just wanted to give credit where it’s due in a subject I’m very passionate about, and I created a war in the replies that is lasting almost as long as wwii. Welcome to the internet.

Caboose 117 - True. But the allies' cheap, ugly weapons were generally better. As to tanks, Shermans and t-34s were both better than all German tanks in the early war, and the allies had the sense to make thousands of them instead of putzing around with hand-crafted wonder weapons. Tigers look great though, I'll grant you that. But I'll take Shermans over Tigers - at least my tanks will arrive on the battlefield.

METALLICARULES11 Churchills weren't designed to deal with other heavy tanks. For what its worth it's not like Tigers or even Panthers were very common tanks, actual encounters on the Western Front were pretty rare.

+METALLICARULES11 they were totally outgunned and outranged by the Tiger and Panther. Bear in mind a Churchill MK III only had a 6 pounder gun. That's a pea shooter compared to the later 78 or 75mm the MK VII had. That Tiger was disabled for two reasons: 1. Yes it was a good shot. I refuse to say lucky. After all they were trying to hit it, it didn't ricochet off a cactus! 2. They were braver. They took casualties and kept coming, firing on the move until the Tiger crew couldn't stomach it and ran. That must have taken some balls. 48th RTR. FEAR NAUGHT.

Atalareza Yuwono It's a medium tank man. Medium tanks are the middle ground between the fast/agile lights and the heavily armored heavies. The Sherman had thin armor too but it's also famous. So no, it's not the armor that's the problem. The issue here is the fact that it was overshadowed by the other cats.
@babalonkie8 жыл бұрын
+Afrika Korps You mean the copied design of Soviet tanks? Being the panther was based on them and only designed to go up against t-34's. It had a good gun but its armour was in fact mediocre... It looked good on paper and was better than the pzr 3+4 (of which it was supposed to replace) in terms of fire-power and defence but the allies had guns that could pop it after a while. Also they were not reliable and broke down even more than the other German tanks and were terrible on fuel (Both of which Germany was already bad at). I personally think the tank has in fact got too much credit as it gave nothing in design and was just a fancy gun.
@psk1w16 жыл бұрын
People keep going on about what an extraordinary tank the Tiger I and II were. It was extraordinarily expensive to make, too big and heavy, and UNDERPOWERED due to using the same Maybach V12 as smaller lighter tanks like the Panzer IV. Just as WW2 was ending, the British Centurion tank was entering service. It was of similar power (RR Meteor V12, derived from the Merlin, and giving a very reliable 650 bhp). It was of equal gun power to the Tiger, but smaller, lighter, faster, much more maneuverable, more reliable, etc etc. It was still in service in major armies in the '70s - the IDF used it to great effect in the '73 Arab-Israeli war. So it deserves the credit as the best tank of WW2

It was all about the gun. All you hear about is how thick the armor was and how many hits it could take. The beauty of the Tiger is in the 88 mm high velocity gun that it brought to the battlefield. Why were Allied tank crews afraid of the Tiger? Not because of it's armor but because it could hit and destroy Allied tanks before they could do the same to the Tiger.
@TheBaBaTV2 жыл бұрын
German engineering at that time was something else, they were really determined to be resilient!
@NorceCodine5 жыл бұрын
The 88 mm gun in the Tiger was originally anti-aircraft cannon that shot a projectile 10 km high vertically. But it was the precision of the cannon that made all the difference against other tanks. From 3 km distance it hit the target with the first shot, while aiming the T-34's gun from more than 1 km was essentially pointless.

Yes it was but this film is bullshit because tiger in this film goes against sharmans. But the tiger was not allowed to shoot in the move. This film rly isnt good as well.
@thefanification9 жыл бұрын
arthas304 you do realize the barrel is probably incapable of firing, many weapons and what have you are ya know, DE-MILITARIZED. I bet the Sherman's barrel was a movie prop barrel capable of handling movie explosives, but not a real shell.

Every time I see a Tiger i feel sorry for the allied tankers that had to face it knowing it could utterly destroy their tank with one shot long before they could get within range.
@muskokamike1272 жыл бұрын
exactly.....I saw a video a while ago about how it took 5 shermans to take out 1 tiger and only if they were in range (close in). So 20 soldiers died taking out 1 enemy tank and that was acceptable to the allied commanders. Why? They had an unlimited supply of tankers ready to die for the cause. I don't think any allied tank had a chance until the firefly was introduced.

@@muskokamike127 they had a high chance the Sherman 75 crews found why's to kill a tiger like firing smoke shells at the tiger forcing the crew to abounded the tiger

The first production run of 40 Tiger I was rushed into action, 11 to Tunisia, 20 to Eastern Front and 9 to Leningrad. There were numerous mechanical failures and Maybach was able to supply only one spare engine and transmission for each 10 tanks. I picked up another interesting feature of the Tiger I. The gun was so powerful that the crew had to lock down the turret prior to a shot or the turret would be knocked off alignment. This made any kind of firing during movement impossible. That episode in the film FURY with the Tiger rotating its turret while the Sherman was circling...fantasy.

In Willers Bocage Wittman wiped out 15 intruders tanks 14 apc ' s and an anti tank gun. All this In 15 minutes including ammo reloading. In total he killed 140 tanks and even more russian anti tank gun crews. He had an opportunity to step back which he did not do. Finally he was killed by 5 allied tanks. In general this shows the difference In competence between the parties. One should remember that the war was In the East and happenings after D- day were a minor exercise.

""One should remember that the war was In the East and happenings after D- day were a minor exercise."" Not true. Normandy was massive. 400,000 German troops and 2,000 tanks were lost in Normandy. Normandy and Battle of the Bulge were as big as the battles on the eastern front. Michael Wittmann lasted 2 years in Russia. He didn't last 2 months in Normandy.
@tapiomakelainen7 жыл бұрын
Cameron Burge the fight over Stalingrad cost one million men and was the turning Point of the war. The Battle of Kursk was the biggest ever tank fight. It took 200000 men from communists to win the final batlle of Berlin 1945.
@LaughingGravy317 жыл бұрын
Tapio Mäkeläinen But I never said the battles in the east were small or minor exercises. Normandy involved 3 million men overall. Nothing to sniff at. The Ardennes involved 1.5 million as well. More German tanks and assault guns were sent to fight Normandy than were sent to fight Bagration. Nearly twice as many in fact. Well over 2,000 in Normandy. The Caen area of Normandy saw the densest concentration of German armour ever seen in WW2. 8 Panzer divisions over around less than 2 dozen miles of front.
@marsnz10027 жыл бұрын
Panzer divisions by that stage in the war only had a single armoured regiment. 8 late war panzer divisions had less tanks than 4 early war divisions.

I watched a video (Military History Visualized) were the uploader read the after action report of a very early Tiger engagement in The Soviet Union. There were something like 260 significant hits against this Tiger. The commander documents the very first hit (spare track bracket, lower front hull) to the end of the engagement. The tiger had everything that could be shot off it, shot off. The main gun and coaxial were inoperable as well as the bow machine gun gun. The road wheels, track, and suspension were all damaged, the commanders cupola was destroyed, the tank was on fire at least once and yet the tank still made it back under it's own power. The tank was sent back to Germany and the hull was scrapped. The turret was used at a long range gunnery school after the main gun's recoil mechanism was repaired having been placed inside a casemate. The tank commander praised the resilience of the Tiger and said that it gave them great confidence to be in possession of such a magnificent weapon.

ive played in and around this tiger and many other tanks from the tank museum before the museum became what it is today .The museum only had one guy manning the entrance desk and he also used to look after the museum itself, so we as kids we we used to climb and explore everything we got in most of the tanks from underneath prob the escape hatch.
