As has been said by others, Banff is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. We just finished staying at the Fairmont hotels in Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff - all exquisite and all quite different. And yes, the gold floor staff makes your visit feel like a dream. And while the hotels were wonderful, they pale in comparison to the Rocky Mountains. Maligne Lake has 10 of the 20 tallest peaks in the Canadian Rockies around it. Thank you again to all our Canadian neighbors for making our two week stay in Alberta and British Columbia a trip to remember.
@canadaauroraborealis39584 жыл бұрын
Maligne Lake (mah-leen) is a fabulous lake in neighboring Jasper National Park 300 km / 200 miles north of Banff, and at 28 km / 17 miles long it is the largest glacial lake in the Rocky Mountains, but the highest peak there is Mt Brazeau at 11386 feet above sea level, most others are about 10,500 feet, average for the range. The 300 sq. km / 200 sq. mile Columbia and Clemenceau (cle-mon-so) Icefields which straddle the Banff-Jasper Park boundary has the largest number of high peaks in this region, 15 over 11,000 feet, 3 over 12,000 feet, with steep drops of 10,000 feet down to the nearby Columbia River on the west, which eventually reaches the Pacific Ocean in Oregon USA. Thanks for your nice comments, Americans have been visiting this region since the 1950's and a few even much earlier, by far the majority are very respectful, and they are always welcome.

@Doug Ball How did you like the Lake Louise Fairmont? We visited the Lake out of Banff and were very taken with both locations. Walked through the hotel, and just wondered what it would be like to have stayed there.
@dougball3283 жыл бұрын
@@andrewthornhill7042 It was lovely. It is difficult to beat the view out over the lake toward the mountains. Like the Banff Springs, it is an older hotel so the rooms are cozy. Having said that, I would go back to both hotels without a second thought! The Fairmont Jasper Lodge is very different but also worth a stay. It is all one story buildings and there we had a bedroom and a living room. Very rustic. Loved it. These stays were all part of Rocky Mountaineer vacation - can't say enough good things about them either. It was nice to just sit back in the domed car and watch the scenery go by versus driving a car (which I have also done in BC/Alberta)

WOW thank you! What a trip down memory lane. Spent the year 1980 working as a waiter in the Alhambra serving lunch to Japanese tour groups and the evening in the Rob Roy - which, at the time, featured the finest Alberta AAA beef and chops. We were taught a hybrid of French service with Chateaubriands carved at the table, and Flambes for desserts. Had the great honour to serve Mr Ivor Petrak on most nights, and I believe many years later the Rob Roy is now the Ivor Petrak room. What a great teacher he was as the legendary GM of The Springs. He did so much for the hotel and opening Alberta and British Columbia to Asian guests. And I am told he knew about the staff fire pit out past the golf course which, to a legion of young English and French Canadians where debauchery and shenanigans took place almost nightly. To say nothing of the day I dropped a soup on a Japanese guest at lunch one day and Mr Petrak asked me about it at dinner - thought I would have a massive coronary right then and there at the ripe age of 20, but he let it slide. RIP Mr Petrak. If you're looking at this video and inspired, its well worth the visit. Thank you for this.

This hotel began all those years ago as a tourist lure, to get folks to use the railway system. Canada was dependent on the railways to move freight and people from one coast to the other. We visited Banff Springs three nights. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will go again. I love exploring and went all over the hotel. It's massive. I like heritage hotels and oftentimes you find that an old hotel, while grand may be a little tattered at the edges. You don't notice this as much at Banff Springs. For the most part the fabric of the hotel is very well cared for. One of my favourite spots is the Wine Bar which is a wonderful room in the hotel's old library. Completely panelled with mullioned and leaded pane windows it looks like a room out of an old stately home. Beautiful.

2 years ago we overnighted at the Fairmont Hotel at Vancouver Airport following our flight from the UK so that we were fully rested before our 2 day drive to Edmonton. We were not on the Gold Floor but the room had 2 queen size beds and a huge sitting area, however the highlight was the bathroom. I have stayed in hotels with smaller bedrooms! As well as a double washbasin there was a huge walk-in double shower in one corner, a door in the opposite corner revealed a large room containing the toilet. The best thing was the full size bath along one wall, which was made up of sliding shutters to allow the person in the bath to see into the bedroom. Being over 6ft tall, when I was lying in the bath, my feet were unable to touch the other end - it must have been 6ft 6in long. While breakfast was not cheep, $32CD, it was help yourself and everything was wonderful, though they struggled to provide me with a pot of Earl Grey tea, my wife said the coffee was good.

We were there last year (2018) the first of October and experienced the early and record breaking snow for that time. It was gorgeous beyond description. Of course, we were among those totally un-prepared for the snow which made it even more exciting. The Rocky Mountaineer train trip heading wast was equally scenic beyond belief. Definitely a experience to try to relive. Being a construction person, the hotel is a destination on its own as are the other original Chateau's in Lake Louise and Victoria. Well worth the trip if you enjoy glorious old buildings.

Nice... we (my wife and I) are booked into the Banff Springs for a couple of nights next month... a long standing promise to ourselves since we last passed through Banff about 20 years ago. As an aside, we love staying at the Fairmont YVR before leaving on vacation. A Gold room with a runway view is an absolutely perfect way to spend the night before an early departure. it may not be quite as historic or impressive as the Banff Springs, but watching the North Shore mountains at sunset is very nice... and the runway view rooms let you see some of the comings and goings behind the scenes at an airport... sort of like a Richard Scarry view of "How Things Works"

Years ago, I was there in the dead of a very cold winter. It was wonderful. I remember sitting on a couch in a large room with windows that stood more than twelve feet tall, facing the Rocky Mountains. The room was a grand space with a high ornate ceiling. Behind me there was an over-sized fireplace within which burned a blazing fire. I felt warm and safe. But mostly, I felt humbled as I looked up to the mountains above me. What - or who - can compare? The experience was almost religious.

I wonder if the hotel in the movie was a railroad hotel from the 1920's? These are magnificent structures and also timeless for what they represent. They are a bold statement to promote the settlement of a country. Built by cheap immigrant labour and grand on a large scale. My son was lamenting that there was not a typewriter to photograph each other in front of, typing "All work and no play...." The beautiful rooms sparkling in historically accurate splendour had a timeless quality like the hotel in "The Shining". I could imagine people from another time in those rooms: dancers in the ballroom and men at the billiards tables. The present day Japanese, English, German and American tourists going about their day made me suspect that this is what the guests were lke, more or less (in different clothes) in the 1920's. This was helped by my nostalgic feelings for the mountains and architecture.

Rates started at $849/night for a Double Queen Room with a view of the hotel grounds (i.e. NOT Mountain View).Although the hotel is very nice, $849/night is very rich indeed. We decided to take our camper trailer and camp in Banff for a week instead. We will still be able to enjoy the hotel grounds while at the wedding.

Chris Gleeton, you were smart. Those rooms looked very ordinary, and the public spaces looked pretty ordinary, too. The people in the video looked like cattle. Back in the early eighties I stayed in this hotel for a week, rehearsing for a tour. it was lovely! I heard a rumour that it was built backwards, i.e. rotated 180 degrees from what was intended?

I used to work for CP Hotels in the late 80's, who owned the Banff Springs, The Empress, Chateau Lake Louise, and many others. Had a lot of fun. Here's a fun fact: the hotels are haunted. Especially the Banff Springs.

I worked at an information desk in the hallway at 14:34 in 1999. It's since been removed by the big renovations. The renovations must've happened in the early 2000's and actually they make the hotel look darker, it didn't do the hotel any favors to get rid of all that sunlight. I liked it better before they put all that stone in the lobby. And the room down below at 18:30 is called the Alhambra room (unless they changed it?). I was thinking about that room the other day. I used to take my breaks in there.

Need a GPS to navigate the premises. Allow a couple if hours for a full tour. Gold floor makes the stay unforgettable. Perhaps a video about the Empress in the feature?

Oldies have money, and that's what it takes to stay here. It is expensive.

Lol, rooms start at $900. The only people who can afford to go are rich, old and retired.
