Was a co in Ontario. retired 12 years ago. Worked both direct and indirect supervision. Being at a guard station away from inmates and doing your checks is the way to go. Alot easier on the head. I don't know any veteran cos who would want direct supervision surrounded by all the bullshit involved. I think the people at the top in Ontario corrections who make the decisions are a bunch of social workers that have never worked the floor. Sorry to be negative but times have changed. The older shift supervisors think the same way but can't rock the boat. With more inmate contact, there is a greater chance of allegations against you. In fact inmates are laying charges against officers and winning in some places. Officers are being fired. You guys just got a big increase and you deserve it. If you don't have alot of time in and are not stuck with mortgage payments or having to support a family, and if you don't like the job then get out. The stress, shift work isn't worth it. Always under staffed, doesn't that tell you something. Prisons are a society within a society. The job will change you. When you were a career co, your new job when you retire has to be looking after your physical and mental health. This is vital to you and everyone around you. I was proud to be a co and did the best job that I could, however I am not sure that I would do it all over again. The pension is reasonably good, the key is to collect for many years. Longevity of correctional officers (three studies I am aware of) is not good. Wish you well. If I can help you in the future, I will be happy to.
@simbajohn1882
@simbajohn1882 Жыл бұрын
To the officers, always cya, document everything. Any time you call the white shirt with a concern, mark it in the log that he or she was contacted and mark in briefly the concern. Things have a way of coming back to bite you. Shit flows downhill, all the way to the co and sometimes the casual co if they are on duty. Shuts them up pretty quick when you tell them to look at the log entry.

Never mind putting criminals in prison, put them in senior or nursing homes, seniors are treated like crap for no good reason and live in poor conditions. Seems like our government is a bit backwards, make the prisons or jails look like a 5 star hotel and senior homes get neglected.

I have never been in any prison and concidering my age, I am very unlikely to ever be in one. I guess there are sufferable prisons, bad prisons, worse prisons and horrible prisons around the world. I am not sure to which category Canadian prisons belong, probably somewhere between sufferable and bad. One thing is good for sure though. No death row in Canadian prisons.

@theo9952
@theo9952 Жыл бұрын
@@Papoose18 The death penalty was de facto abolished in Canada in January 1963 and de jure in September 1999. In 1976, Bill C-48 was enacted, abolishing the death penalty for murder, treason, and piracy. Some service offences under the National Defence Act continued to carry a mandatory death sentence if committed traitorously, although no one had been executed for that since 1945. Canada eliminated the death penalty for these military offences on September 1, 1999 The last two people executed in Canada were Ronald Turpin, 29, and Arthur Lucas, 54, convicted of separate murders, at 12:02 am on December 11, 1962, at the Don Jail in Toronto.

I think Chain Gangs should be brought back into use. I'm pretty sure it would reduce prison violence as they would be too god damn tired to fight. I also think it would reduce prison costs as the prison would make money off it from jobs that nobody else wants to do like digging, sweeping the streets, cleaning ditches ect. it would be good for them to earn their keep instead of taxpayers paying for them. They shouldn't have time to plot and plan when worked hard.

@danzig159

No, this is what you get while you wait for trial and to be sentenced, it's called a detention center. And it isn't what the place looks like that you gotta worry about, it's the other prisoners and if they don't like you, it's hell. But, that isn't the end, if you're convicted and get 2 years or more, you go to a much worse place for long term prisoners, it's called the pen. The conditions are much worse and so is the company. You wouldn't wanna go to either place.
