Once upon a time, a striking 27-year-old Australian named Robyn Davidson embarked with her dog Digitty and four camels on a quixotic 1700 mile solo expedition across the island continent through the barren, unforgiving terrain of the outback. Without fanfare or publicity, Davidson’s trek seemed just an odd personal adventure until a young photographer named Rick Smolan crossed her path, and their story captured the world’s imagination. Now retold in TRACKS, an acclaimed new film from the Oscar winning producers of “The Kings Speech” (and in Smolan’s new "smartphone enabled" coffee table book INSIDE TRACKS), Davidson’s unlikely journey is inspiring a new generation. Smolan will share behind the scenes stories and images never seen before at his TEDxBeaconStreet talk.
Rick Smolan is a former Time, Life, and National Geographic photographer best known as the co-creator of the "Day in the Life" book series. His global photography projects feature the work of hundreds of the world's leading photographers, and combine creative storytelling with state-of-the-art technology. In September 2014, the Oscar Winning Producers of "The Kings Speech" released TRACKS, a feature film based on Smolan's National Geographic story about Robyn Davidson's 2000 mile camel trek across the Australian outback. In the movie Robyn is portrayed by Mia Wasikowska ("Alice in Wonderland". Smolan will be portrayed by Adam Driver, of HBO’s "Girls”).

Rick is a talented channel for recording and supporting one of the great adventures of our time. Robyn’s amazing way with words are matched by Rick’s ability to capture the image that sticks. 35 years later-a film student myself and desert born in the American Southwest-i read and reread and view over and over all of their epic materials. I am absorbed by the wonder of the journey. Thank you both.

She followed her bliss. Robyn left it all behind and lived her life. Not many can say they did that.

Great book and wonderful journey through the Australian dessert. Without Rick Smolan Robyn could not have accomplished her trip. He was fascinated by this beautiful and intelligent young woman and did all he could to help her get to the sea with her camels. Both the film and her book are uitstanding.

Wonderful! Too bad the presentation was cut off just when he was getting to the brilliant movie that was made of "Tracks". The book and the film are transcendent.

Where is the location that shows Robyn and her camel in incredibly blue/green water? It seems the Indian Ocean, but where exactly, if anyone knows? Thanks Much!

This is a good example of the problem with the TedX local presentation videos. This video could have been so much more interesting and informative if somebody besides a 12 year old kid had been the editor. The whole point of Ted videos is learning something new, seeing imagery that you can't see anywhere else and having a human face to enrich and guide you through fascinating stories. Instead we're shown endless shots of the audience while Rick's award winning photographs go missing to the viewer's eyes. And the fact that they couldn't even let it run to the end of his presentation shows either a total lack of respect for Rick, Robyn and the viewers or an ignorance of how to create a compelling video. Unfortunately this is not a unique situation. Amateur filmmakers who have no idea about how to actually create a film are put in charge. Just because you know how to turn on a camera or know the basics of Final Cut does NOT make you a filmmaker. TedxBeaconStreet needs to up their game.
