Mr. Printer is a California business specializing in offset printing, a technique that could soon be a relic. For offset printing, paper is actually pressed through a machine's cylinders with a stencil. Digital printing is faster, but offset printing, sometimes called lithography, produces better quality copies, especially for larger prints. Hicks relies on word of mouth to bring in new business. Mr. Printer doesn't even have a website, and does not show up in online searches.

Our local printer has been in business since the 1920s, and they also have no website. There's nowhere else I'd rather have business cards, stationery, and forms printed for my personal and office use. The quality is like nothing digital can offer. I'm glad to see other folks still around carrying on this excellent kind of print work. Thanks for keeping it alive, Mr. Hicks!

At this point, a website will do little for his business. I currently work in a print shop, we had a similar offset press until about 4 years ago, we ultimately gave it up because the digital press was easier, faster, and ultimately cheaper to operate. The only way an offset press is sustainable is if you can run multiple jobs on a sheet, and on a tiny press like this guy has, you can only do 1, MAYBE 2 at a time. The big commercial offset presses can run up to 24 jobs at a time, that's why they're still in business.

Sadly as a printer lover, the number of times ive seen blurry compressed pixelated photos get printed out on copy paper and most people don't see anything wrong with it. Only other designers and artists seem to tell the difference

Same!! I worked in a photography lab for years and people would save photos off of Facebook, pixelated and compressed, and print them. The number of times people wouldn't even SAVE the photo and would screenshot so you'd see the "Like" and "Comment" buttons was so frustrating to me.

As a regular person, i can tell the difference. But I never knew there was another way to print which makes better quality. Guess it is kind of like operating systems. I currently work in a print shop and I can tell you categorically, almost nobody can tell the difference between offset or digital printing. If it's done properly, it will only look bad if the original image was bad (in which case it would still look bad if offset printed)

At this point, a website will do little for his business. I currently work in a print shop, we had a similar offset press until about 4 years ago, we ultimately gave it up because the digital press was easier, faster, and ultimately cheaper to operate, while not only maintaining quality but allowing full color printing (the press Mr. Printer uses only allows one color at a time). The only way an offset press is sustainable is if you can run multiple full color jobs on a sheet, and on a tiny 1 color press like this guy has, you can only do 1, MAYBE 2 at a time, which makes him much more expensive. Unreal . I know your trade . Because it is my trade . Offset printing. The Guttenberg printing press . The colour separations. The "catch up" . Bleeds. The 🤔 short runs, long runs, work and turn . Two up, four up, six up, eight up . Marginal areas . Paper stock . Guillotine. Dark room photography. Lithography. Port Press Commercial Printers: For all your printing requirements. And of course I remember it , just as anyone remembers their own livelihood working trade history . Its owner operator initiator Jason Ciavola, did the work of ten thousand men readers . I know . Because I was there . I understand the trade , so this presentation excites and interests explicably. He could conduct one hour come and see education tours, of the workshop and its working operations for secondary school students, or other interest groups ( gold coin per person entry) as a means of keeping the trade alive and extra income IF so desired , as am quite certain there would be heritage support, interest for that .
