Brent Spiner (Star Trek, Independence Day) joins us this week to drop some bombs about a certain someone’s return from the dead in Picard Season 3. Brent shares how he feels about being recognized (mostly) for a single character as Data in Star Trek - and later gets into the weeds on what his experience with the android has been like over the last few decades. We also talk about lessons learned from Joe DiMaggio, how he beat himself out for a Saturn Award, and tons of stories from his other roles in Night Court, Master of Disguise, and more!

First year TNG was turbulent. Patrick was too serious and had dragged everyone to a meeting to lecture them on ethics of hard work and being more considerate to the crew and stop joking around and be professional. He mellowed out as he accepted his role as captain and trusted the crew more. And it was full of hardships during the 7 years. They did 1 ep every 2 weeks, sometimes they worked 16 hours a day, ended the week on Saturday 2am.

I'm still amazed by the story of how he had just done a huge data-heavy episode, a 16-hour day, and then was handed a script "hey we're doing another data-heavy episode, you have to play three new characters, get it memorized in... 8 hours" and he had to just go home and do that instead of sleeping.. and man, he DID it. I enjoy seeing him pop up in old Broadway shows. My favorite is Sunday in the Park With George, which is available on DVD, where he plays a minor but enjoyable role in a very strong choral ensemble. His biggest film role (outside of his supporting roles in Trek) was a bit role in Independence Day. Not saying the guy didn't DESERVE to lead his own film - he absolutely did, it just never happened because he got typecast. Point is, we have a word for when a talented actor could have made a fantastic lead when he never did, or could have had a much more high-profile career - the appropriate word, by definition, is "underrated." @metazare
@metazare Жыл бұрын
As I understand it much of the techno-babble was stuff that came from Roddenberry's writing. The cast could ask him questions about things they didn't understand about a technology in the trek universe, and he was able to explain it to give them better context for a scene. I'm certain once he was gone they had to improvise, but I think much of the early stuff is very grounded in the laws of the universe he created.

He finally gained a sense of emotion that showed the profound human condition that he wanted so desperately, and was able to remain himself as a unique and new species. *Transhumanism ignorance* is NOT the destiny of the human race. Why do you even _need_ a physical body when you have transcended this lower physical vibration to a higher spiritual vibration??? Many intelligent species before human have _already_ done this (Lyrans) and many will continue _long_ after humans have spiritually matured. While Gene Roddenberry’s misguided Transhumanism can make for interesting Sci-Fi it doesn’t change the fact that the pseudo Religion of Science are still false prophets.

Yes, they did use the jump as it was done by a stunt actor as Brent stated. He is scared of heights so they used a harness for Brent then digitized it out then did it a second time. Please pay attention to these videos.

Awesome to hear that they are all friends. One of the most shocking things to me was that the Monty Python crew never hung out together as friends, always seemed so odd since I'd just taken it for granted that they all hung out goofing off and making jokes together. But that is the business, they may seem like good/great friends but just be workmates.

I love Star Trek Next Gen so much that I've never watched 'Picard'. It just felt wrong to revisit it. STNG will always be close to my heart and Brent Spiner's performances are so central to that joy and love. His performance and the character of Data was so fascinating, so heroic and so pure that will always treasure that show.

When you see older interviews or hear them talk about the early days/months of TNG it presents an image of Patrick Stewart that is entirely different from the one we know today. A classically trained stage actor, all about being serious and hardworking, to the point where he'd get annoyed when any of the cast was goofing off or whatever....it's genuinely amazing knowing that and then hearing a story where he was just bouncing around on a platform in a missile silo to mess with Brent cause he was scared of heights :P

I wish more people knew that a HUGE portion of legitimate acting... is also known as the COURAGE to face the unknown. But the lamen or consumer never thinks that way. 30+ years as an actor and performer (mostly for LIVE work). I was ALWAYS nervous before every performance. I always wanted to deliver my best. I doubt that anyone truly ever appreciated it, though. 😕 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨

I remember seeing an interview Michael Dorn/Worf gave and he said that this was one of the hardest 'adjustments' or aspects of moving to DS9 ... the TNG cast & crew apparently were close as family and loved going to work every day and spent their time proverbially smokin & jokin etc. - and they hung out together, became close and it was just an awesome "work environment" ... but when he got to DS9, Avery Brooks (whom I met and is a great dude but I agree can be intense in his 'work ethic') fostered a much more serious, "this is work not play", serious-business type of work environment. He wasn't used to that, TNG was much more of a "family business" kind of environment.

The difference is, people watch a show for years and feel those manufactured fictional relationships very strongly, so if they learn the connection isn't as strong between them in real life, for some viewers that affects their enjoyment of the fictional relationships. Picard is a very strange series. The second season seems to just have been thrown aside. Q is apparently okay now and the new Borg queen just isn't there after all that time traveling. And Wesley just shows up for no real reason. They also keep trying to insert Brent Spiner as another clan Soong member, as well as the Borg. I honestly don't know where they were going with it. Season 1 and 3 at least has a continuing link.

I think the reason I hold the TNG cast closer to my heart even though I was young enough for TOS was the lack of ego. Shatner seemed to sully everything, maybe a personal issue as his behavior wasn't against the norm but all I saw over the years was the remaining cast factioning against Shatner, with Nimoy being the neutral observer for the most part trying to keep the peace. I pictured Sunday dinners with the TNG folks, sharing stories and so forth. Seeing the interview with Jonathan Frakes and Wil Wheaton's past problems was just heartwarming, because they really were a big family.

Michael, I can’t recall which episode of Smallville this was from, but Lex and Clark are having one of their Alan Shore/Denny Crane moments in the barn, and Lex says something like “Clark, when my father dies, kings will come to his funeral. When your father dies, his friends will come to his.” My dog was diagnosed with cancer two weeks ago and that line has been running through my head every time someone has come to say goodbye, and there have been so many of them. I don’t.. I dunno. It isn’t the right video to leave this under, but I wanted to let you know the work you did on Smallville was true art, and it reverberates through the world in ways you can’t imagine, and I guess I wanted to say thank you - it’s been an oddly comforting thing to hold onto during an otherwise unbearable couple weeks. Cheers, mate 🍻

I would pay billions to see a 'Galaxy Quest' movie staring the TNG cast and crew. Hearing everyone's respect for Jonathan Frakes it'd be fun to have everyone looking to Patrick Stewart as Captain, but it being Jonathan they listen to as Director out of habit. Seeing their real life friendship dynamic humorously play out on the big screen would be such a great time for the fans. Picard (season 3) was a nice send off for the crew, but it'd be a lovely sign off for a cast which many cherish as fondly as their characters.
