Bill is one of my favorites. For a while, he had his own website, that he would frequently post on, and chat with the rest of us (board has been gone for years now). He talked about something he did as a kid, that was funny, and I told him something I once did, and he was laughing. He also talked about filming The Pacific, and something funny that happened. With the filming, he was marching some soldiers across the field, wasn't paying attention of what was ahead of him, and smacked his lower body into a stump. Bill was really a cool guy to talk to. I have a friend who with other Bill fans, would have a gathering at a hotel with Bill and they would just have fun and talk. Sadly I never got to participate (was broke).

The Shawshank Redemption is largely based on Stephen King's short story (Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption). Clancy's previous film appearance was in King's "Pet Cemetery II" where his performance as a sheriff was critically acclaimed by the horror film "academy" (nominated for best supporting actor). So, it's pretty clear -- if he really did have a bad audition -- that the film's writers, producer, and director clearly wanted him and the audition was merely a formality.

@@xScooterAZx Does he act in a vacuum? That whole scene on the rooftop is a collaboration. This is no disrespect to Clancy.

You could put Clancy in ANY movie and he would do justice to whatever role he was doing. Underrated actor.

I think it's funny how Clancy Brown struggled to "get into character" for his role as Captain Byron Hadley. That often happens when the character is 180 degrees opposite from the actor playing him. Martin Kove had a similar experience auditioning for John Kreese in The Karate Kid. It can take a lot of practice for a fairly "normal, humane, person" to immerse themselves in the role of a cold, ruthless, demented individual. Both Byron Hadley and John Kreese are legendary movie villains.

The most amazing thing about Shawshank was that it came out with little fanfare or promotion. I went to some random mid-week showing back in 1994 not expecting much & left having seen one of the greatest films of the last 30 years.

Such a shame Carnivale was cut short. That could have been his time to shine in the spotlight.

Mr. Brown reminds me of what a famous actor once said...."A Great Actor NEVER thinks they are as good as their Peers....THAT is what makes them Great". I remember watching this movie over and over for a few months and then seeing Clancy Brown show up on the TV show E R and thinking WHOA....how is he going to pull off the role.....and of course he nailed it too! Love This Guy! Cheers From Columbus, Ohio

It's called 'imposter syndrome' - normally the best people for jobs are people who get that as they are self-aware enough to know when they are doing things wrong. (EDIT: Ha! I posted this 30seconds before Clancy mentioned Imposter syndrome! I leave the post up though.)

Clancy Brown's characters as Byron Hadley and Viking were scary as hell. In other words, he nailed his roles in his prison movies!

He "nails" all his roles. :}

What he definitely had going for him, regardless of a seemingly bad audition, was his look. He just was the guy for that role and they knew it.
