Does anyone know if Jellied Eels can be made with saltwater eels? I’ve been trying to make this dish at home, and there’s a market near me that sells saltwater eels, though some of the recipes I’ve found online call for freshwater eels. Just curious.

I'm sure you could probably do it gelatin is basically made from collagen from Bones and connective tissue melting down lots of animals can be made into gelatin
@stevebarlow315411 ай бұрын
@allenchildress6861 These are silver eels that are born in the sea, come into rivers as elvers, spend most of their life in fresh water and return to the sea to breed and die. Conger eels found in the sea are traditionally made into soup, but can be cooked in other ways. I would have thought that most conger eels would be too big to turn into jellied eels. The moray eel found in tropical waters is eaten by the Japanese as a delicacy.

This food reminds me of jellied food from russia 😆 (aspic) savory jelly :) I want to try it though. But quite interesting how british came to other countries to get their spices and they have this. However, maybe this is authentic british dish.

Coming as I do from Southend-on-Sea which is further along eastwards on the Thames estuary coast (although not there now, alas), I can tell you these are really delicious, and I miss terribly having access to buy them. I prefer to eat mine with a little bit of brown (malt) vinegar and ground white pepper (but not black pepper).

How i cooked spicy eels - clean the eels, throw the intestines - long cut (from head to tail) the inside near right side and left side of the backbones - take the log or something and smash their bones a bit - cut the head - clean it with lemon ( it will clean the goo) - steam it - cut chilli, garlic and red onion - use blender throw all the spice there, add salt, sugar, pepper and and 1 tsp lemon juice - fry the sauce, add steamed eels - serve it

weird as it may seem but jellied eels is actually included in my wishlist of foods that I want to taste before I die, including black pudding, ghee, haggis, fugu, fresh and live octopus or squid, etc. I was already able to cross out century egg, truffles, and blue cheese
@jayjayn00711 ай бұрын
Seems easily attainable. Where do you live? They're all over the shop shelves in the UK and Ireland. And I've seen them in expat British shops globally. Black Pudding though may be difficult to find, as in some countries eating blood is illegal. But they all taste delicious.
@PILOSOPAUL11 ай бұрын
@@jayjayn007 I'm from the Philippines hahaha and they are not available here anywhere, the closest that we have would be what we call 'betamax' which is solidified pig blood eaten as cubes, prepared barbecue style, as for jellied eels, the closest we have would be fish broth that has been refrigerated, thus the soup somewhat solidifies a bit
@jayjayn00711 ай бұрын
@@PILOSOPAUL aw fair enough. You guys have some Spanish influences in your food from the past. I think that's where the pigs blood may come from. I know they also eat similar stuff in Spain. I live in Ireland, but when I lived in London used to go to the eel and pie shops in East London. If you ever visit London go to Greenwich, as they have these old world shops there selling these pies and eels. Very cheap (for London). And tastes great. And the shops look the same as they did 100 years ago. Hoping to visit Philippines myself! And all your many beautiful islands.

@@jayjayn007 If ever I won't be able to have a chance to taste those 3 famed delicacies from UK, how would you describe their taste (haggis, black pudding, and jellied eels)
@jayjayn812511 ай бұрын
@@PILOSOPAUL to describe them, it's best to explain what they contain. It's the offal they use, plus spices (nutmeg etc). And in the Haggis and black/white puddings they also put barley. It's a bit crunchy from that. It's great to see offal being used. As it's a waste if that's simply thrown away, as people want to only eat steaks. Weirdly in London, it's now fashionable to eat offal at the fancy restaurants. Things like bone marrow is now served in fancy restaurants in the city of London for bankers. Who pay loads of money to eat it! Jellied eels taste cold. And that green sauce is very sour. I guess it's working class food. But again, quite fashionable to eat. And given it's cheap, great to eat there instead of having to cook. Generally everyone eats a "Full English" / Full Irish / Full Scottish at a cafe. The prices are cheap. And you'll get black/white pudding in that. Along with eggs, baked beans, tomatoes, sausages, toast, mushrooms etc. It's eaten all day, than simply for breakfast. In Ireland we take all the items for breakfast and put it into a roll, we call a breakfast roll. Equally delicious.
