Taker just admitted on the Broken Skull Sessions that he lied to HBK about this and that it actually happened. Taker loved HBK later in life and didn't have the heart to tell him it was true.

I am trying to find the interview where Undertaker clarified this, and Bruce Prichard mentioned on his podcast, The Undertaker didn't directly threatened him to his face. He let it be known backstage so that word would get to Shawn but he didn't say it directly to him

Do a KZbin search of off the record with Michael Landsberg Undertaker. Michael Landsberg asks him about the story about having to go to Shawn Michaels and tell him to do the job and asked is that true? The Undertaker replied " well that's a variation of the story." he did explained that if things hadn't gone the way they did it probably would have been a real long night for Shawn Michaels , and that he was going to do what he thought needed to be done. So yes, he was planning on beating the shit out of him if he didn't do it. He didn't actually say in that interview about not threatening him, but since he was asked if he did that and said well it's a variation of the story you can kind of get that he didn't actually say that to him. But yeah both Taker and Bruce Prichard have mentioned that no he did not go up and threatened Shawn directly, but he did let it be known to certain agents Etc backstage that he knew word would get back to Shawn. The Bruce Prichard one will be somewhere on his channel, but yeah the Broken Skull thing for the network won't be on KZbin. I can't remember which one, but it came up in another interview he has done in the last year and he explained the same thing with that "no I didn't go and threaten him personally."

That's not what Shawn said -- he was speaking in hypotheticals. As in, "*IF* Taker was going to try to send me a message, he wouldn't make a scene, that's not his style. If he wanted to say something to me, he would just pull me aside in private and tell me." What Shawn's claiming here is that Taker warned others, including people in the front office, but never confronted Shawn directly about it.

He actually looked good with the short hair at Wrestlemania this year. It suits him well. Although, it does make him look older. His hair had been pretty thin for a quite a while. But it hadn't gotten any worse over the years and still looked presentable as long as he wasn't sweating (as hair bunches up when sweaty) and had hot lights pointing down on his head (like in this video). To be fair to Shawn, Undertaker's gimmick essentially being owned by Vince McMahon means that he couldn't use the Undertaker name outside of the WWF, if Austin hadn't gone over like he did at WM 1998 and had his push thwarted like say Sting did during and after Starrcade 1997 the WWF and the Undertaker might've been looking up at WCW come around 1999. The mess that became of Bischoff's booking and such changed dramatically post WM1998 because he and everyone knew Austin was the hottest thing going and they weren't winning the ratings war anymore. Things change dramatically if they're still the top dogs when AOL and Time Warner merge. Taker needed Austin to carry the company because it was the best case scenario for his and most people's longterm well being.

As for Taker understanding the need for Austin to go over at WM, it's 100% something Taker would do. He's had a lot of personal glory but as an old school guy understood that guys with huge momentum need to be pushed, and that beating legends on the biggest stages is the best way to do it. I remember when Austin started to get huge and if he had lost to Michaels at that WM... WCW would likely have still gone under because they continuously shot themselves in the foot, but putting Austin over may have been the most important decision in the companies history. I think at that time Calaway knew that WWF needed something huge to win the ratings back and that Austin was what they needed. Hence his lesson to Shawn.

Witnesses say otherwise (Cornette among them) and from Shawn's side of it, he might not have seen the Undertaker. Story has it that once the match started, Taker walked to the Gorilla position with his fists taped, sat down and watched the monitor. Once everything started going to plan, Taker stood up, took off the tape and walked off. It is distinctly possible that Shawn would have never seen any of this from his position in the ring.
