This psychological horror follows Cassie and the vivid dreams she experiences when prescribed sleep medicine. Although her insomnia seems cured, the increasingly sinister nature of her dreams begin to play with her sanity.
‘Insomnia’ was my final graduate film project for university, it was shot across four days on a shoestring budget. The script was penned by Australian Screenwriter Warren Duncan and was originally titled ‘Living Nightmare’. Cassie is played by up-and-coming actress Katie Bennett who was a joy to work with and I could not recommend her highly enough. The cast also includes veteran actor Bhasker Patel who plays the psychiatrist; UK viewers may recognise him as Rishi Sharma from Emmerdale.
This is by far my proudest work to date and it was a rewarding challenge turning it from script to screen. I am very grateful to all who have helped me to do it. Any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me and feedback is much appreciated!

Agreed, but I don't think the clock is actually that loud. If it were me, It's just that it's all she can hear because of the total silence around her. I'd look for something that would generate some form of "white noise" to blot out the clock.

@Gold Rose Her sister showing up out of the blue isn't as far-fetched as you may believe. Her sister may have finally gotten therapy to help deal with her past, and a big step of that would possibly be to try to reconnect with the sister she left behind when she ran.

I so understand insomnia. I suffered from it so bad when I was in school. I took over the counter medicine for it but wow. That ending hurt. Her sister really shows up and just, so sad. This was well done and for once it wasn't a creepy monster in hiding. Though I personally would have like to see the ending done a little bit differently but still, fantastic work!

Fantastic short film! That ending is so sad! 😦 The look in the younger girl's eyes, as her own sister was strangling her to death! She had no idea why! I can't begin to imagine the level of guilt the older sister would feel, for the rest of her life! Great acting by the woman playing her. She genuinely looked mentally & physically exhausted.

I just realized that you were the same filmmaker who created The Forest Has Us. I saw Insomnia a few days ago and, like Forest, really apprecaite the storytelling. Once again, you have avoided so many of the silly tropes that plague 95% of the "homemade" horror films on KZbin. Like Forest, you have a real story that sets up the viewer from the beginning and follows faithfully through to the end, like classic Twilight Zone and Outer Limits. Emotional and thought-provoking. Good work. Thumbs up. And keep it up!

For cinematography, score, mood and overall unique story, you scored. I wasn't really surprised at her insomnia. If you watch stressful news about war and listen to a beating clock like it's your heartbeat, no wonder you can't sleep! Put on some mediatative music, smoke a joint (if it's legal in your area) and you are out like a light!

I fall asleep sometimes but I don’t know that I’m asleep so in my dream I get up and read a book or watch some tv. Use the bathroom- get something to drink. Then I wake up in my bed. But I’m still dreaming- so I dream about waking up. The cycle continues.... over and over again. Sometimes I wonder if I’m actually sleeping- or if I’m in a time loop. And yes- I read a book. And I can understand what the words say and the story often times makes sense, chronological order too. Just recently, I read a book about a boy, his name was Hunter. He could see the past, but he was at the mercy of his power. At random times, his brain throws him back in time, but his body stays in the future. One day, he gets stuck in the past. Like, his body was in the future but his soul was in somebody else’s body. I never finished the book. I regret not finishing it. I’m never going to know what happened. I remember looking at the title- It was called ‘Time To Go’ and I was confused as to where I got the book. It had like... a door of some sorts on it’s cover. The door was slightly ajar and there was a brilliant white light leaking out of the cracks. I think the Author’s name was ‘Sarah ... something or other’. If this is a real book, please tell me. I loved the first half, I want to see what happened to him. Maybe in real life this time.

Also, anyone who has ever strangled another, knows how difficult that is and how long it takes, not to mention the expulsion of matter from the bowel and the relaxation of the muscles that maintain continence! Honestly, kids, be prepared!

Very well-made and relatable film. Also, the portrayal of the doctor was spot on, but I do wish they were this nice in real life! Lol. Really swell job, great story as well. Told nicely. The main actress did a really good job.

I had (and still have) trouble sleeping. My doctor prescribed trazodone. I took only two and threw the rest away. The first night I had such vivid dreams I awoke in a cold sweat, trembling. I tried one the second night and it was worse. The dreams were more vivid, frightening and when I awoke, it took a couple minutes to realize I was awake. I've never taken another sleep aid. I'd rather have insomnia than those vivid dreams.

Very good film, i deal with insomnia and take sleep meds, however, never went through these side effects. It seems as if the ending has a "read between the lines" twist. Since the sister didn't fight back in some way while being strangled, it seems to me that she probably wanted her life to end anyways. The reason why I say that is because while the other sister was having these dreams, this sister did say "you knew what dad did and you didn't do a damn thing to stop it", and "you was always the favorite child." So to me, the sister could have been molested or physically abused, and not feeling loved by her mother since she felt the other sister was favored more which is why she ran away. So getting strangled and not doing a thing to stop it was her way of having her life ended while also a way of getting back at her sister for "taking all the attention". Thats my take on the ending. Either way, very well done on the whole film.

I take a few medications for sleep and also a few others for other reasons that have a side effect of drowsiness. I definitely have had qutie a few hyper-realistic and very scary dreams since I've been on these medications. There's only been one time that I had a nightmare that completely blurred the lines of it was real or if I was still sleeping. It was when I had sleep paralysis caused by missing a few doses of my depression meds. When I woke up and couldn't move a muscle, and I saw a dark figure standing and watching me while I kept struggling to move my arm to punch at it. It felt like my arms weighed thousands of pounds and my muscles just stopped working. Then I guess I actually woke up again and I could move, but it all felt the same as the "dream" still, and I got up and ran to my mom's room as a 26 year old man scared as hell lmao.

Brilliant work here! I am a fan of psychological horror/thriller and I found this to be well-paced and well-directed, especially when we follow the journey of Cassie and how she deals with insomnia only to spiral into a much darker place while trying to tell the difference between reality and dreaming. I'd like to see this be made into a feature film some day!

Pain is the reason why I have insomnia. Other was pulsating vascular tinnitus . It often feels like a balloon expanding, doubling up in size before it explodes. It was one of the reasons it ended up having me hospitalized.
