My problem when I had insomnia was that I was 𝘵𝘳𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 to sleep - putting effort into something that should be effortless. I was also worrying when I did not manage to sleep, with each hour the stress would build as it got closer to my wake up time for work I fixed it by trying not to sleep. I thought to hell with it I'll just stay awake the whole week. The first night I didn't even go to bed,. I cleaned my house top to bottom and went to work the next day. The second night I fought to stay awake and fell asleep at 4am, so I got 2 hours. The third night I was so shattered I fell asleep on the sofa about 9pm and slept til about 1am, went up to my bed still groggy and slept another 5 hours. And for a week thereafter I had a normal sleep cycle. I still get insomnia now and then, and I repeat the process I just mentioned. The best trick to beat insomnia is not to resist it but to embrace it. Use the hours you are awake for something purposeful. Don't stress about it, just go with it. When your body needs sleep it will happen, just ask any soldier doing their basic training.

If I’m having a good week or two I can sleep no problem from 10 pm to 7 am but if my anxiety is high I can wake go to sleep at 10pm and wake up 3 or 4 am on the dot and no way can I get back to sleep. Worst part is it’s not the getting back to sleep part which is worst and trust me living in England in the winter time and starting work at 7.30 am sucks when it’s still dark at 7 am. Leaves you feeling quite trapped. But no the weird part with the insomnia is the nausea I get, once my body is aware I’m awake super early and can get back to sleep it messes with my stomach big time... very odd and annoying. There’s been times when I’ve woken up at half three and had to work on a building site until 6pm that evening. Once you’ve done it a few times, terrible as it is. It does give you some reassurance that you know you can still function and go to work etc. Which is extremely important

@sirbilliam34552 жыл бұрын
I find myself needing to do this about once a year. Life will happen where I need to reset the time I wake up. It's always a difficult process. Word of advice for the first day and then some, keep yourself busy. Resting will only make you tired. I had done this in highschool for my graduation project because the topic I chose was about sleep and all the reasons people can't sleep and how to fix it. I had tried this wake therapy on myself to test the effectiveness, and it helped. It was a 2 year long project I had done in about 3 months, and at the end when I had to give the presentation in front of panelists I was well rested for about a month consecutively at that point and my anxiety was down. This is something I have done since then whenever I need to wake up at a different time due to a different job or whatever. I suggest starting this on a Friday morning so you get Saturday to be exhausted and sleep Sunday morning. It also helps to wake up on that Friday at the time you're going to be waking up at throughout the week. So if 7 am is the time you want to wake up, make sure you are awake and rested the best you can be 7 am that Friday you'll be starting.

I have been reading about something called Serotonin Syndrome. It is helped by Valium and Lorazapam only. Those two only. Valium helped me break the cycle, so I slept. My old doctor gave me 4 prescriptions of 20 pills only of 10 mg. Valium a year . FIRST Night I would split the 10 mg in two and take 5mg. If that did not work in about 20 minutes I would take the other 5 mg. Worked like a charm. 2nd night take 5mg. 3rd night 2.5 mg, 4th night 2.5 mg. Then my insomnia cycle was over for sometimes months. My new doctor won't give it to me, my old doc retired. He understood breaking the cycle. Valium is a muscle relaxer and never made me sleepy the next day. Lorazapam makes me groggy all day and it stays in your system longer. You have to sleep to make sleep . I think new doctors dont know much. Look up serotonin syndrome.

I've been dealing with sleep issues since my late 20's. At first it was helpful; I was the first to the gym, first to the office. But now in my mid 50's and I am getting 4 on a good night; but there are mostly bad nights of 1-2 hours. I feel like I have tried more or less everything. I quit drinking alcohol, stopped drinking coffee after the mornings two (large) cups (though I cut it out totally for a trial but didn't help), started doing 10K a day in walks most days of the week, lost 20 kilos as a side effect to the Keto and intermittent fasting diet. I eat around 3pm so it's not eating late. I'm taking vitamins and mineral supplements. We started putting sleep music in our TV with the sleep timer. No phones in the bedroom. I tried this; Dr. Christianson's very logical and sound approach several times over the years; I call it a "re-set" when I do the exhaustion method. What I haven't been able to get too is a rhythm of improvement. But what is tough is how it is effecting my mood which effects how I am with my wife and son. I'm snappy and get pissy about things all the time...honestly I am not fun to be around more and more of the time. I'm trying some homeopathic drops now. I honestly don't know what the heck I'm taking...but desperate times and all that...

Might also just be metabolic, I was over exercising, under eating and not getting enough carbs which eventually lead to nutritional deficiencies etc (at the time thought I was being healthy)I was putting my body in a constant catabolic state which will cause the body to stay awake and alert, as it is meant to. Think about what you are doing and what messages you are sending to your central nervous system via the way you eat exercise and live...you might be putting your body in survival mode and your body is doing what its meant to be doing.

This is kinda a crazy question but did you try doing exactly what it says to do in the video and stick with it? First, if you are taking Trazadone strictly to fall asleep get rid of it. If not talk with your doctor. If you have been in bed for 6 hours make adjustment to only allow yourself 5 hours in bed for sleep the next night. If that doesn't work adjust it back to 4 hours etc until you start sleeping the majority of the time you are in bed. Then and only then allow yourself and extra 10-15 minutes in bed and see if you sleep the whole night through. Just stay disciplined and make the adjustments you need for yourself. Every human being knows how to sleep. Your insomnia is curable. By doing sleep restriction you are just interrupting the old sleepless pattern and replacing it with a new one.... You can do this Donna!!
@funkyjones6 жыл бұрын
+Donna Keeley - If you can't fall asleep within 20 to 30 minutes, get up. Don't just lay there getting frustrated. You'll start to associate sleep with being frustrated. Just get up and do chores or something relaxing until you feel sleepy, then go to bed. Laying in bed is the worst thing you can do if you can't sleep. Also, as a rule, only use the bedroom for sleep and sex. No TV, computers, reading...anything.

And there's no help from Dr's either except ativan and the likes. I just weened off of ativan but my sleep is worse. There's some underlying problem but too many variables. And I've gone 2 days without sleep and on the 3rd day I didn't just plop down and go to sleep. I had to take a pill. I never just fall asleep from exhaustion. I was up for 3 days straight ended up in the ER and didn't fall asleep till they gave me something. I’m trying to be patient with myself throughout this it just appears as though others don’t know how difficult of a process this is. I’ve used otc medication z-quill this helped one night. It’s sporadic and quite disturbing. Like I said, 46 years no problem then all of the sudden. I’m trying to retrain my thinking as anxiety is coming and going also. It’s an interesting idea here. Very nice analysis sir.I am aware of all this but what to do when the family members don't understand what a person who has sleep problems can't be made to remain awake late at night and also don't understand that the person must not activate the brain at night to help them? Now I have used my last trick and that is I have told them that I will finish my work and go to sleep. Don't ask me to do any helping work at night but only in the morning after breakfast. Also I told not to talk to me once I go to sleep at night.

For the last 15 months I have slept on average 3 hours per night. Never had a night of insomnia before this. I tried the sleep restriction therapy. Stayed up an entire night as suggested. I was exhausted. I only slept from 2am-350am. Continued for 10 more days since I already lost my job and had nothing else to do. Basically, I never got more than 3 hrs of straight sleep doing this. Always wake up around 2-3am..mind racing. Only thing that got me past 3 hrs of sleep was Medication but an extra hr wasn't worth it. All it did was make me sleepy, not sleep longer(or nearly long enough)

Hey guys just accidently read your messages and felt a lot of sympathy for you. I do get 5 hours of sleep and get up... similar to your issue. I have noticed that it could be related to low blood sugar. One night before bed I had a couple of chicken wings and had the best sleep. Protein helps maintain blood sugar. I am looking into changing my diet accordingly because apparently hypoglycemia can be the reason why I dont have problem going to sleep but wake up after some hours because of cortisol kicking in. Maybe you can see if it is the same for you too. Hope you get well.

This is all good, but keeping up with a busy work schedule and stress, having done everything possible, like behaviour changes and medications... my brain just doesn’t switch off, ever! I’ve been through this since the age of 10, I am now 36. I have VERY vivid hallucinations at night, I’m not awake nor asleep, I experience everything as if it were real and it gets very dark and weird.... I feel, taste, hear and smell during these periods. I “wake up” like I’ve run a marathon... this can go on for many months at a time with no obvious pattern. I put on a good show during the day but, when I get home, I’m a wreck.... I am so jealous of anyone who can put, what seems like minor inconvenience measures in place to correct their sleep disturbances, but it has never worked for me. I am desperate for help because I can’t carry on like this. I am exhausted, terrified and unable to cope like this. I don’t want to be on medication but nothing, including the meds has helped.

Forcing the body to stay awake when it is tired, or trying to force the body to fall asleep when it's not tired are difficult indeed. Much of our need to "control" our sleep schedule is what results in the stress and anxiety around sleeping...which then further impacts our ability to sleep. Getting healthy sleep is a biological process that our bodies are designed to do naturally. It is only when something is interfering with our natural sleep system, or we are trying to change/manipulate that system, that we run into trouble sleeping. Sleep Well - Live Well.

One thing that I'm not sure many doctors will or can even understand is how dysautonomia can affect the circadian rhythm to the point of the dysautonomia dysfunctioning enough to the point that the circadian rhythm has turned to trash and in my case- taking itself to the landfill to throw itself out. This effectively means that I have no circadian rhythm. I spoke with my neurologist about this along with what I'm suspecting is now happening- when my brain and body (particularly my brain) are exhausted enough that when I do eventually "fall asleep", it's not actual sleep and instead it's like a demented exhaustion coma/unconsciousness. My neurologist agreed with me in that this is extremely likely AND it's not good. This is because no matter how long I'm in this weird comatose like state, it's NOT sleep. So, I just feel even more tired because a comatose state isn't sleep and therefore NOT restful and restorative for my body. Another thing that I have due to the dysautonomia is central sleep apnea, so anytime I'm feeling like I'm going to pass out, I have to use my cpap so that I am forced to keep breathing. Unfortunately, my neurologist confirmed my fears. Because of how the dysautonomia is degenerating all of the autonomic functions, it is becoming increasingly likely that my dysautonomia case is going to be fatal. I just pray that it won't be too traumatic for me or my family.
