About time... long past due. The "Safety inspections" are a hold-over from years past, when the Federal Gov't required the states to do such vehicle "safety" inspections. The federal requirements were dropped many years ago (not withstanding "smog" checks/inspections), but a few states have held on to the "safety inspection" practice - Texas being one. Today, most states only implement emissions system testing, and then, only in certain larger, metropolitan areas.

I keep my vehicles well maintained with regards to their ability to move and stop safely. Of my 3 vehicles, all of my inspection stickers have been out, one vehicle for over 4 years. 2 won't pass emissions, removed cats for performance on one, other is a 20 year old beater with bad cats and the cost to fix will likely fast exceed the cost of tickets I may get before it dies. I have illegal tint as well. I've been driving and maintaining my vehicles this way for my entire time driving as an adult for nearly 20 years, and have an immaculate driving record with no at fault accidents, points on my license, and I have really low insurance cost. If I get a ticket, I just get someone I know to hook me up with a good sticker, show my new inspection to the courthouse, pay $20 and go about my business. I'm not arguing what I'm doing is right, but my point is that inspections are useless and if someone is going to let their vehicle fall apart they will, and inspections won't change anything. With regards to emissions, I'm not spending $1,800 to fix a vehicle with 250,000 miles... give me the ticket and if I somehow couldn't get a sticker, the $200 ticket averaging every 1-2 years on vehicle that does 30,000 miles per year is going to be cheaper than fixing for the life of the vehicle. To be clear I fully have the finacial ability to pay for the fix but will not. The road to hell is paved with good intentions which is all an inspection requirement is... a good intention.

As an inspection station, we were told this was just going to be for 1 year as they plan to come back with inspections with emissions. The "No inspection needed" will be for vehicles made after a certain year in 2025 or 2026.

Inspection stickers went away in 2015. You still need the registration sticker and you're still responsible for keeping your car in good working condition. Just because there's no more inspections doesn't mean you won't get a ticket.

Texas doesn’t have inspection stickers on windshields now! We have registration - which right now we have to have inspection done before we can get it - but there is no inspection sticker - hasn’t been for several years now. Starting in 2025, the inspection will no longer be required. (However I plan to continue to get inspections just so they catch anything that I will still be responsible for if I get pulled over - tire tread, brake lights, head lights, wipers, etc

What bothers me the most is that we are paying a “replacement fee” . What is it being replaced with? What is the fee going to? You can’t charge someone a fee for service they aren’t using. I AM NOT FOND OF FUNDING THE SHOPS WHO DID THE INSPECTION. THAT’S THE STATE’s JOB NOT OURS. Charging someone for a service they don’t receive can be considered illegal or at least a breach of contract in many jurisdictions. We haven't had inspection stickers for several years, you have to get the vehicle inspected and take that inspection receipt to the tax office to get your REGISTRATION STICKER that everyone see's on the windshield. I do not think that doing away with vehicle inspections is a good thing, there are too many people on the road that do not ensure their vehicles are safe to operate.

The reason that most people don't get an inspection is that they can't afford to get their vehicles repaired. They drive their cars anyway. It is a stupid law that has no verifiable benefit. You do realize you will still pay the same amount ! The fee for the inspection will be rolled into the annual registration fee. So actually there is no loss of revenue to the state. Kind of like they did when they moved away from having separate vehicle registration and inspection stickers, just streamlining the whole process.

I moved to TX from Washington state where they have surprisingly done away with emissions inspections after determining that the vast majority passed and the extra driving and idling required for the emissions tests was causing more pollution than saved from the rare failing car. It was a rare bit of common sense in a State which rarely demonstrates that. I hope TX comes around to that...maybe with the new Chevron Supreme Court case TX will also be able to end Emissions testing?
