The brilliance of Sellers performance is that despite he’s a walking disaster he never loses his own sense of huge self-importance and belief he’s a great detective.

To be fair, aside from 3 different broken pieces of equipment, he still got the lead he needed and was right about the wax as Col Sharkey pointed out. Thinking it was Charles and not Simone is really not his fault, but more a credit to her deception.

Same with me - and it sent my father into hysterics back in the day. Saw this in the theater during its original run. There was a pretty good amount of laughter when Clouseau goes in the wrong direction, building through the other screw-ups -- at times it became hard to hear Sellers' voice over people giggling and gasping to each other -- until the huge metal disk crashes down onto the statue, when there was gigantic laughter and applause.

I don't think Chevy Chase comes close to Peter Sellers, his technique is pretty sloppy and he tends to let the audience know he thinks he's funny too, his attitude is often "oh wow isn't me so clumsy? Isn't me so dumb?" like he's mocking the character alongside the audience When Peter Sellers does his slapstick, his characters tend to think "oh I am massively screwing this" and "I have to act professional/like I belong". Clousseau here is a detective first, and the butt of slapstick second. To me, someone with a disability that basically makes me be clumsy just like him, Sellers characters are the perfect balance between relatable and funny. I laugh because the stuff he does could very well happen to me, and I would probably react with the same attitude, and I have also seen other people react in quite the same way when they make a screw up. So like, Sellers wins. He's up there with Buster Keaton.
