Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf and Church members compare drifting in life to the circles walked by test participants in a dense forest. Shadows creep in off the path, but we can chase away darkness and come back.

I’ve always gone to church and tried to do my best to stay close to God, but struggling with bipolar disorder, it often feels like my discipleship is determined by my mood. I think what matters is God knows we’re trying even if to him we took many detours along the way. 😊

Bipolar disorder is so difficult, I actually know how you feel. It's scary, disorganized thinking and odd thoughts. My care provider makes appointments she doesn't keep. I'm struggling too. You're not alone. I was recently introduced to the Church of Latter Day Saint faith. I'm interested yet not sure.

From my wilderness survival training: pick a tree, rock, or other object directly in your proposed straight line and walk to it. When you get there align yourself with your point of beginning. Then pick another tree directly in your direction of travel. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Then you will walk in a straight path. It works for traveling the covenant path in the gospel of Jesus Christ, too.

I love this metaphor. When we look back to the faith of our ancestors, and of where our righteous roots are, those can serve as “point of origin” markers which will help us keep moving forward in a straight line.
@ianjackson9852
@ianjackson9852 Жыл бұрын
@@chilanga6075 In addition to looking back on those who came before us, I think this practice also applies to month-to-month landmarks. If you're struggling it can be hard to know if you're getting any better, but you can compare yourself with the you of a few months ago. Of course we all sin and fall short so you can't get too broken up if you're worse in the present than in the past, but those past months are a good way to keep track of your habits and faith to kind of track where you'll be heading in the future.

At the risk of getting off the main topic, there are different wilderness survival situations. If you are deliberately going to a specific point, your suggestion is great. However, if you are lost and don't know where you are and are not absolutely certain of which direction to travel, stay put! I mean that very seriously. I have over 30 years in search and rescue and one of the worst things a lost person can do is continue moving. We start with what information we have about where you have been and usually search beginning there. If you continue to move, you will remove yourself from the area most likely to be searched. I repeat, if you are lost, stay put. Try to protect yourself and do what you reasonably can to make yourself comfortable, but do not leave the area.

I was just thinking of the time in Final Fantasy 7 where you have to do that to get through the blizzard, placing a series of wooden stakes into the ground to mark the path traveled. I feel like I can fall back on previously learned examples from Christ when I'm stumbling, and start up again from there.

Such a good message; especially right now in 2023.... I think a lot of people "Think" they are on a straight path when in fact they are not. My favorite part of this video is the quote that is shared from Elder Uchdtorf " Do you want to change the shape of your life....Then change the shape of your day." Its so easy to get in a rut, get comfortable, get complacent. Small things can lead us off the path but small things can also lead us back on the path.

I've found that I need daily restoration in my life. It is so much harder for me to deal with life's pressures, if I have not, or am not constantly throughout the day, seeking my Savior's spirit and comfort. As I strive for this, it comes more and more quickly. This can be true for all of us, no matter where we have been.

And- is the difference between Lehi's family being led to the ocean and to the Promised land, vs. The Israelites wandering for 40 years in the desert.... when left to your own devices, you'll never get there.
@ogroberts
@ogroberts Жыл бұрын
A good parallel I enjoy is the Israelite Exodus vs the Pioneer Exodus. One group spent 40 years lost due to disobedience. The other group spent 40 years building a temple. It's a good metaphor for life: You can spend your years wandering and lost or you can spend your years working toward eternity. Either way you'll spend the time (live a mortal life), but how will you spend it?

I love that Grace from Jesus’ atonement is available to me and to any person each day, and the amazing thing to me is that Grace covers sins, but also is for comfort and for strength anytime we need it. God’s refreshing, restorative, revitalizing power is available to anyone who draws near to Him, even in just a simple prayer, exerting even a particle of faith. He answers privately, reaches our reaching, in our challenges, Savior and friend. I’m grateful for this awareness and understanding and for the peace it’s given me in my life. Keep the faith, hold onto hope, turn to God and be enlivened. ❤

Sometimes doing the same things day after day after day can feel monotonous and even pointless. However, making certain our communication connection to our Heavenly Father and the Savior is strong and clear ALL of the time is so important because we do not know when it will be desperately needed. In that moment of need we will be extremely blessed because of the strength of our connection, more so than we can know. I left the church, stayed away for 40 years. Now that I have returned I do not ever want to be disconnected from the Holy Ghost, our Heavenly Father and our Savior EVER! Not even for a few minutes! I have learned the hard way how empty life is without that spiritual companionship. With it we do not have anything to fear in life. Faith, comfort, peace and spiritual guidance is worth more than everything else in life!

The people who are lost walked in circles without knowing it. People can come back and change. Relationships with family, colleges and Co- Workers will be better and I believe it when we get closer to Jesus Christ we can do all things. Reading daily scriptures freshens my mind, heart and soul. I am grateful for Jesus Christ and all that He do for me each day. I can feel His love, and our Loving Father in Heaven's love daily when I do my part, daily prayers, read the scriptures, daily repentance and change. Make time for the Lord through temple worship every week with family names and I am grateful for that opportunity.

So very true. Particularly spiritually. We must nurture and feed our spirits daily. Daily sincere scripture study, weekly church attendance, and daily prayer are the beginning. I loved the part in the video "People can come back" "Daily restoration means daily repentance" Coming to Christ is not a one time event. It's a life long daily work.

I love this. It reminds me of the circumstances I was in when I decided to pursue the Gospel - I decided to rely on Heavenly Father instead of relationships with others to find happiness. That's not to say that relationships aren't important nor do they bring happiness; instead, it's a way of not relying on others to make me happy as I instead know that Heavenly Father is always reliable, He is always there and in turn I can have full control of my own peace and happiness, as that constant (ie the Godhead) is always available as a resource.

@@nathanbanks2935 Hey, thanks! I recently posted on Facebook about how I had decided to quit tea and coffee. But I pretty quickly felt like that was a cause for stress, and that I needed to back off on that promise. And so I ended up drinking a matcha green tea today. I still think that I want to move in the direction of quitting these drinks, but I don't quite understand why the church has said that green tea is not okay. Still, even so, I don't mind trying to quit these drinks and stuff nonetheless if it is really the best thing to do. 😀 I have already quit alcohol, and don't smoke, so that's something at least. Also, I have quit pornography / strip clubs and some other bad things. I definitely have a testimony of the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and His and His Father's love for all of us! ❤️ Thanks for your prayers for me you guys.

Hello @gregsuhr8408, thanks for your comments and we are glad to hear of your testimony. Great job on all of the progress you have made! To answer your question, the Word of Wisdom is a health code included in the Doctrine and Covenants, a book of scripture used by Latter-day Saints. The Word of Wisdom is most recognized for barring the use of alcohol, coffee, tea, and tobacco, but it also promises physical and spiritual blessings. We follow the Word of Wisdom because we believe it is a commandment from our Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ. What a great video. Reminds me of the teaching in Ether 2:5-6: "5 And it came to pass that the Lord commanded them that they should go forth into the wilderness, yea, into that quarter where there never had man been. And it came to pass that the Lord did go before them, and did talk with them as he stood in a cloud, and gave directions whither they should travel. 6 And it came to pass that they did travel in the wilderness, and did build barges, in which they did cross many waters, being directed continually by the hand of the Lord."

I’m so glad to hear you heard the spirit in your life. He works in mysterious ways and to think you were confronted to cry by such a loving, powerful, and meaningful voice, isn’t that amazing? It was meant for you to here. The gifts we receive from our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are spectacular and I hope you are guided to look for the spirit more in your life. Even if you are or aren’t LDS I dearly hope you can try to read the scriptures, the Book of Mormon is a great way to start looking for everlasting strength and happiness in your life. Please stay on the covenant path because I know so deep within my soul that Heavenly Father awaits you and your gentle spirit and awesome personality. I know that what I’m saying is true because you were shocked too by the spirit, it just tells me how amazing you are! And how great is repentance that we can feel a direct source from him! He’s guided me to write my testimony for you and I hope you’ll like what i’ve said because it is true without a doubt in my heart. Your Heavenly Father loves you, Jesus Christ is the true savior and of course he loves you so much, and the Book of Mormon is another testimony of Jesus Christ and prophets are disciples of Jesus Christ. I really would love to tell you every little thing about what I know but you deserve your own time to converse with your heavenly brother, Jesus. They are the save yesterday, today and forever so keep and open mind to him in your life! I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

I went from “walking very tight repetitive circles” as a drug addict and alcoholic nearly killing myself multiple times. To turning to the Lord and slowly repenting and painstakingly making adjustments and transitions in my life style which expanded my circles and made them fewer and broader. It has not been easy to turn away from people places and things that had become habitual downfalls and stumbling blocks, to making scripture, prayer, Hymns and nearly constant worship to “overcome the world” - President Nelson. And over come satans constant attacks on my eternal faith. My circles have turned to a path, straight and narrow, with very few curves. I have learned like Peter to keep my focus on the Savior and when I do sink or fall I call for him and he is there immediately to lift and clean and dry me for the next several miles. Endure To The End. “in coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost.”- President Russell M Nelson
