I saw a different video showing a large center starting piece for the super sized hot pad and I just want to thank you so much. Last year my husband's granny passed away and she loved cooking big Sunday dinners. Any family who was available just had to show up so we have so many memories of her in the kitchen and around the table loving on and laughing with family. I am getting some of her calico house dresses and extra fabric from her house. I've been looking for a way to use these, honor her memory and ideally have something for us and to share. Once I saw this idea, I knew this is what I wanted to make. Depending on the quality of the dresses (they've been worn) and how many I get, I want to make these hot pads for my family and gift one to each of her "kids". This way Granny can still be a part of our family dinners. I am so excited, I can barely wait to get started!

Hi! I've watched your videos for a while now. You make such lovely quilts using batiks. Have you had trouble with colors bleeding? If so, what do you do?
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise Ай бұрын
Only on one quilt, Pilar. It was a bright red/pink batik next to low volume fabrics and it bled about a 1/4-inch into the lighter fabric...and I still have it on the shelf. The way I understand the batik process is that the fabric is rinsed/washed to remove the wax when it's finished. It seems to me that would remove most of the excess dye. Therefore I don't prewash and only had the one issue with the red batik. As a precaution, you could always dip a few inches of fabric in water and lay it on a white paper towel to test it. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Hi Lea, I just wanted to know if you could help me with something. I went to the Salvation Army store here, and purchased all of their wedding gowns and formals. I brought them home and cut most of them up. Saved everything. The lace, the satin, the silk. How do I sew satin and silk ? Should I put them on steam a seam and then quilt them together ? What thread do I use ? er...what type of thread and what size of thread ? Can you help ?
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise 3 ай бұрын
Wow, that's quite a project, Jeni! It sounds like lots of fun. Silk will probably require the 'lightest' touch, especially when ironing. You can easily sew either fabric using a poly thread or a poly-cotton. Use a smaller size needle as you would for quilting, like a #10-#11. The big thing is to use a couple small pieces as a sample for ironing. If you're talking about assembling the quilt sandwich, use Odif 505 Spray Adhesive for Fabric. It'll hold your layers together without using pins. Best of all is that you won't need an iron either. To use an iron, check for tags in the dresses giving you handling instructions, or do an ironing test. Start with a low or medium heat iron on the wrong side of the fabric with a damp pressing cloth and see how it reacts. I use a cotton dish towel which works well. Keep the iron moving and don't hold it one spot where it'll get too hot in one place and scorch the fabric. For best results using steam-a-seam 2 you'll need high heat. It'll adhere fabric together at a lower temp, but may not sew well as it can cause your needle to get sticky without high heat. Again, the best advice is to try it first. I definitely wouldn't use it for holding layers together for quilting as it will add a firmness to the fabric. Hope I've answered your questions. Let me know if you have any other questions. Enjoy your quilting! Lea Louise

Well, I was thinking of using the pieces in conjunction with my batiks. I cut them up in 5 inch squares, or most of them. I wanted to make a bed quilt with them and the batiks. I thank you very much for your time and expertise in this matter. You ROCK ! Again, thank you.@@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
