I think it's fun to get fabric from other people - quite often it's something I would never have picked - but this style of scrappy blocks means you can use those fabrics and get a gorgeous result. LOVE the blues with the yellow/gold. I tried making a potato chip block and yeah, I'm making a quilt with them. Not only are they so easy and fast to sew, but there are also just endless possibilities with how much or how little "randomness" you want and the overall look. I even chose colors I'd normally not put together ( a minty green with hot pink and orange) and it's just popping. The block is also phenomenal for making quick pillowcases that looks amazing.

I just found you 3 or 4 weeks ago and I'm really enjoyed your videos. I am 75 years old and have been seeing since my early 20's. For many years, I sewed for myself, my boys, but mostly little girls things with English Smocking. I only started piecing about 3 years ago. I have a lot to learn and not a lot of time to do it. I just wish I had started a lot sooner. I also do machine embroidery. I want to do some scrap quilts. Not having piecing that long, I don't have a lot of scraps. I am fortunate to have two friends who have given me a lot of scraps. I live in Elizabethton, Tennessee(northeast). Looking forward to more of your videos. Also, I love to hear your voice Gloria
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise5 ай бұрын
Welcome, Gloria! So glad to have you following along. Be sure to let me know if you have any questions along the way. The beauty of scrappy quilts is how forgiving they are. As you saw in this tutorial, you can simply join small pieces to make the larger size you need. Those added pieces add some great interest throughout you quilt which makes it a double win! Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

WOW! I love the prints and colors! A very happy quilt! My potato chip quilts are random fabrics. But I've been doing a lot of fun squares for the middle. I was just thinking about that. Your eye has a resting place in the blues and with the brighter ones a way to travel around the quilt to see all the different patterns. I did not see that in the big blocks you were showing so I definitely would need to use a design board to step back and find those areas that could benefit from blocks of similar quiet colors.
@dannamcgowen38895 ай бұрын
Thanks for showing how you break down your fat quarters. You are so right about not using FQs if they are whole. I'm currently processing a bunch of scraps for potato chip blocks. If it's a large enough scrap piece I'm leaving 5" strips that can become charms or jellyroll strips in the future. Next step my FQs. ✂✂✂

Did you leave your center squares at 8” or did you trim them to 7-1/2”? If you cut your rectangles at 7-1/2” x 4” you could not start with an 8” block…unless you first pair of rectangles were 4” x 8”.
@mignonnerogers68485 ай бұрын
I guess I don’t know the math process for this, but why could it not be left at 8” and cut the rectangles 4”x8”? Does it not layer out properly?
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise5 ай бұрын
It's the seam allowance that throws the math off! We'd need a 4.5" x 8" rectangle for an 8" center square. That's why I did the sample block just to be sure I had it right. 😊 Your numbers would work for the finished size blocks, but you need to add the seam allowance to both pieces. It can be a bit of a brain teaser! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Could you define "potato chip block" please? Thanks.
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise5 ай бұрын
No short answer to this one, Barbara! This is actually a variation of the Courthouse Steps Log Cabin block. I've seen it called the Fractured C-Steps Log Cabin. It's had other names over the years like the Lumberjack Quilt and Scrappy Rectangles. But most recently it was dubbed the Potato Chip Block because you can't make just one! It's a fun scrap-buster and a very simple pattern. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
