Learning to iron hit home for me. My sister's and I all had to learn how to iron. We started by ironing dad's handkerchiefs. Then we worked our way up to dad's shirts, my shirts and my sisters dresses. In the early 70's I even ironed my sisters hair for her

So glad I never had to iron hair!! I still have a shelf full of doilies and dresser scarves that definitely need ironing by now. Maybe it's time to teach my granddaughter! 😂😂😂 Thanks for visiting memory lane with me! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Hi Lea. I've been "watching" n listening to this while I cut a gazzilion 2" squares for my latest project - a scrappy irish chain with light grey as the focal.😵‍💫 Just wanted to say, I made a blue monochrome quilt similar to yours with much larger squares. Every hue of blue & white (& pattern) known to man with the occasional touch of yellow. It turned out beautifully. I completed it early in the new year but I wish I had seen your tutorial when I started. A few of the tips would have come in very handy. I have just finished cutting another huge stack of assorted squares & your company was very much appreciated. TFS. Have a great day. Regards, Sue from Oz

Thanks for such a lovely comment, Marga! HSTs were always troublesome for me and I stayed away from making them for a long time. But there are too many beautiful design possibilities with HSTs to ignore them. It's better that we all face the challenge together! Besides it's more fun that way. You can all laugh at my mistakes and then not be surprised if you seem them in your own quilting. That way you can correct the problem and keep moving forward! Sure appreciate you watching! Thanks, Jess, glad you enjoyed the tutorial! All those colors are wonderful to look at in a single quilt. What I like is that at first glance there's simply a riot of color then the pattern starts to become visible. This is a pattern that requires lots of preassembly but once those blocks start going together it finishes fast. Right now though, the quilt just doesn't look finished. I'm seriously thinking I may need to add that last row to complete the large squares. Luckily I haven't put all the fabric away yet! Thanks so much for watching!! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Enjoyed your video! I’d like to share this hint. I find that when I starch (saturate and let dry) my fabric before pressing and cutting, I get more accurate cuts and less possibility of waviness along the diagonal lines. Just finished a quilt with almost 800 hst’s and having my fabric starched was a game changer for me.😊

Yes, I had to iron all of our clothes, doilies, pillow cases, sheets and tablecloths. I know all about ironing. 😵‍💫I even inherited the ironing board my father built for my mom 68yrs ago🥰. Love your video.🤩 Some was a little hard to follow,🧐 (cutting your FQ) but I think I've figured it out.🤓 I started my quilting abt 1 1/2-2 yrs ago and am 66 now so I really appreciate all the tips and tricks that are out there, (I'm learning to let go of my OCD) I have been wondering why when I measure twice my squares are not squaring up properly, now I have a better idea. Thank you😁 I have to keep adding to my comment. Where were your words of wisdom on how to iron 56 years ago when all those dang doilies weren't cooperating when I was learning how to iron? Those things were laying every which way and were so frustrating! lol.

Love your comment, Elle! My grandmother would show me how to iron my dad's shirts. After rolling it in a damp towel, the collar was always first. Ironing was just something we always did until polyester arrived. That was a life changer except I can still remember that it never really felt very nice. It could be a bit scratchy. But it was wash-and-wear and we loved it! I even made my husband a polyester leisure suit with those long pointed collars when we were first married. We both still laugh over that one. We've come a long way! I definitely enjoy making quilts over clothes, even if I don't do lots of pre-ironing! Thanks so much for watching and sending such a fun message. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

The older (I mean more mature) I get, the more I find that accuracy really does matters when it comes to quilting. When I first started quilting, I didn't square up blocks; and my seams were "sort of" 1/4 inch. And surprise! The finished quilt tops were not very good. It doesn't take much time to square blocks up and get much better outcomes. Thanks, as always for sharing your tips for making better quilts!

Have you made any design boards? They can be a variety of sizes. You can stack up all of the blocks for a quilt on one and move the lot to your machine, then web piece all of them at one sitting. (Cut apart and re-stack, before adding the third column.) Turn the board and you have the other seams now vertical. You can use leaders and enders for a bonus project and add one after each 3rd patch, to keep track of your blocks, and just keep going, trim them off after you've got all 9 patches together?. Pin and check as you go on your points, and work faster. The next pass can turn your leaders and enders into 4-patches? Or you can make up border bits, or pinwheels or broken dishes as cornerstones this way.

Might I suggest the use of the walking foot for making the diagonal seams, no puckering. I'm a big fan of the 8 at a time HST. I also use a 16.5 square for 8- 7.5" HST. I stayed.
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise

Thanks for those suggestions, Carylanne! My concern is that the top fabric would be drawn in too much leaving a shortage at the end of the seam. Though I must admit I haven't tried it. I appreciate your input and will give it a try. Your idea for the large HSTs is great. Since I quilt with lots of FQs, I've used 18" Squares for 8.5" HSTs. Those large blocks make awesome chevron quilts! What layout designs do you like to use with your HSTs? Sure appreciate you following along! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

If someone wants a “ruler” to use as a guide to draw the lines couldn’t they buy the “cutting mats” from the Dollar Tree? They could cut about 2 1/2 inches from each of the 4 sides and then use the uncut straight outer edge as the “ruler guide” for the drawn line? (Those sheets are maybe an 1/8 th of an inch thick. )

@@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise I don’t like raw edge appliqué( because I can’t make it look neat) so I trace the piece I need to cut on the rough side of it and use kitchen shears to cut it out. I then use that template to trace an outline on the wrong side of my fabric. I use used and soaked dryer sheets ( I make sure the sheets don’t have any of the gunk left from the fabric softener on them ). I pin the dryer sheet to the right side of the fabric and then sew them together. on the traced line of the material back all the way around it . I then cut the middle of the dryer sheet out and make slits in it to almost the seam line. Turn it right sides out press and pin the appliqué in place and sew it down. Solid and no raw edges. That’s my only other trick!

You're right, Margaret! Sometimes the simplest mistake can make your quilt blocks very difficult to work with. Pressing across the bias results in a big 'smile' where the seam should be. That makes any triangle hard to sew. Thanks for your comment! Happy Quiltng, Lea Louise

how does corduroy work in a rag quilt?

@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise Жыл бұрын
That's a great question, Lorraine! It's not a fabric I've seen used in a rag quilt but I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work. As long as it's all cotton you'll get the fraying. What if you cut the squares so they weren't on the bias. /l\/l\, that way you would be pressing with the fabric instead of against. The edge could be pointed or have half triangles at the bottom. Pointed border \l/\|/ or straight border /|\/|\
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise 7 ай бұрын
Good question! When sewing triangles you're going to be either sewing or pressing along the bias. Give it a try and see what you think. It's more important for me to get the accuracy of sewing on the bias while the fabric is uncut. While pressing on the bias may need a bit more attention by steaming, it works out to be the best for me. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Thanks for reaching out, Franki! There are some options that will be a big help to you. Many quilters are challenged with some quilting math and fortunately there are solutions to that dilemma. There are paper packs you can get with printed HSTs. You just pin them to your fabric, follow the sewing lines, then cut where indicated. Simply remove the paper and you have the exact size HST that you need. You can check your local store or search online for Triangles-on-a-Roll. This allows you to make from one to as many as needed. They are printed in a single strip and you cut off what you need. There is also Half Square Triangle Paper with multiple blocks on a single sheet. The Fat Quarter Shop Online sells many of these products. They also offer a free Triangles-on-a-Roll Cheat Sheet - HST Size Chart. This is helpful in determining sizes and fabric quantity. Please let me know if I can be of more help. Thank you so much for watching and I look forward to hearing from you again! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Sometimes that little square to click on to make the screen larger is there and sometimes not. It's there now as I watch this.

My thought is the time delay it's taking to load the video file to your device, Marlyn. This is the longest video I've published which may delay the time it takes for the 'Full Screen' icon to show up. There are some articles on google if you search 'KZbin Full Screen Toggle Glitch'. Apparently this can also be caused by some settings on the device. Fortunately it's working now! Thanks so much for letting me know what's going on. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

It's like you knew what I was sewing the last 2 days. Many of your tips are things I noticed as I started on a baby quilt. The use of a scant quarter inch seemed to be useful. I'm only doing 2 at a time because I wanted to get the orientation of some directional teddy bear prints showing their best side. I did marking, using a quarter inch ruler and pressed with an iron. Trimming a stack of HSTs will happen tomorrow. I'm following loosely a row by row idea by Jean Truelove. 🇦🇺💜🇺🇲💚🧵🪡👍

Glad this video was helpful, Anita! A row by row quilt sounds like fun. I've thought about making one and just haven't finalized a plan. You've put the idea back in my head. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
