Inspiring Stories: Surfing in India | Mahabalipuram

This TFT "Vlocumentary" dives into the inspiring story of Mukes "Mumu" Panjanathan - a fisherman's son whose life was transformed after he learnt to surf from some visiting tourists. Mumu was one of the first Indian surfers and has been a key part of growing the surfing culture in India. He now runs schools (@mumusurfschool, on Instagram) in Mahabalipuram and Goa, where he teaches people of all ages and from diverse backgrounds to surf. If you're looking for something fun and different to do in (and around) Chennai, then a surfing lesson in Mahabalipuram should definitely be on your list of things to do!

I spent a couple of weeks in Mahabalipuram in 2009 and remember this guy, Mumu. I have a photo of him somewhere. He was taught how to surf by an Australian guy, Rob, who set up India's first dive and surf school there. Glad to see he has improved in the past 14 years.

I honestly did not know that people surf in India as well until GoPro (I think) tied up with the first Indian female surfer and they shared her story. Its good to know that people are exploring alternate streams. India has a heap of untapped talent/potential mostly because as kids, teen or even adults, we have been discouraged from exploring (at least the majority of us) and I am glad that its changing now. I don't think Mumu could have asked for someone better to share his story through. Hoping to see more of such stories in future. :)

I met MUMU in Agonda Beach Goa 2019 .... he used to come to the beach everyday with a little kid ... didn't know that he was a surfer... Surfing is on my bucket list and would like to learn
