When I was on the fence about faith in God and deeply depressed for about 10 years, it was when I discovered your channel that helped me back on track with Jesus, who then set me completely free from any depression! Now I want to learn as much as I can from you and other Christian KZbinrs and become someone who can also help others who struggle with faith. Hallelujah! Thank God for you, Michael! It would be interesting if the Bronze Age Collapse eventually becomes a source of evidence. In the sense that the loss of the Isrealites and a major army contingent led to a loss of power and trade for Egypt and contributed to the general economic collapse of much of the major powers at the time. If so, then Egypt would have been even more eager to hide the incident as the knowledge of it would have been ruining their regional clout. In that case, maybe textual evidence could be found in the other groups that Egypt traded with as they would have been less inclined to care for Egypt's pride.

Yes, I wish he would tie in these ESSENTIAL data: 1. The SHORTER SOJOURN in Egypt as testified in the Septuagint, historians, and other non-Masoretic texts. 2. The VOLCANIC eruption of Thira. This cataclysmic event must fit in somehow. 3. COLLAPSE of the Bronze Age. Estimates of around 1186 B.C. should somehow sync with the plagues and exodus.
@wybub
@wybub 2 жыл бұрын
I've always believed that, considering the time periods sync up pretty much perfectly, that the Exodus was apart of the Egyptian side of the Bronze Age Collapse. It makes sense that between the other factors that effect the cultures of the near east and Mediterranean regions, that a mass exodus of a major workforce would contribute to that.

To the contrary, Egypt was the only east mediteranean nation that survived (albeit greatly weakened) from the Bronze Age Collapse. Only afterwards is the establishment of Israel possible, since 1) an 'exodus' of the Levantic coast people for the safety of the hills swelled their ranks and 2) Egyptian power had collapsed in Canaan. Except for a lack of pork remains, all in the early Hebrews' culture (pottery, religious rites, language etc) suggests a Canaanite, not Egyptian origin. Thanks for adressing the Bronze Age Collapse, by far the most important event in the era at such a critical time.

What convinced me was actually a thumbnail by the channel UsefulCharts, which displayed the Exodus chronology in both the standard interpretation of years, and the years of the Hebrew calendar and how it functioned. Seeing that made me realize how many Christians today got the chronology of the latter part of Genesis and Exodus so wrong. It was because we were measuring the time based on the modern understanding of years as opposed to the actual yearly understanding of the Hebrews, which was a lunar calendar.

It's just nonsense & he knows it. 2,500,000 million people with animals, supplies, weapons, fire wood, tents, would be in a line 200 miles long (eight abreast with three feet between each row) Women with babies, children, pregnant women, old people, crippled, blind, sick. Yet this line was supposed to outrun the Egyptian Army, with Chariots & Horse's in a single day & night!! Come on? Personally I'd love the story to be true but sadly it's a myth.

I also love the way this video tactfully pointed out that the claims of Stripling and Petrovich do not fit the available facts but politely refrained from calling them by the term we commonly use for for people who make claims contrary to the facts. There was a pharaoh's palace literally at Avaris built by the 18th Dynasty, on the opposite side of the river to the city. Avaris at the time was the largest city in the world. There is no obstacle that I can see at the moment to believing that the 18th Dynasty resided at Avaris, at least for portions of the year, especially as it was better situated for food gathering and distribution, and therefore oversight; it would have been cooler than Thebes or Memphis in the summer, (The hyksos had used it as their summer residence in the previous century) and also it was the primary trading city, so it was the location best suited for the receipt of luxury goods into Pharaoh's court. Avaris held a major military garrison from Ahmose onwards, right at the beginning of the 18th Dynasty, it was the main focus of the military cult of Seth which I can only assume made the area significant to military expansionists like Thutmose III, it also served as the 18th Dynasty's primary naval port from at least the period of Thutmose III onwards. Also, we know that Amenhotep II was born and raised in Memphis, so the idea that because Thebes was the capital, therefore the northern region wasn't used by Pharaoh, is incorrect. Thutmose III was raised in Thebes, which means at some point during his reign he transferred to Memphis for at least a significant portion of his reign, as his heir was raised there. As both Thutmose III and Amenhotep II are listed as potential 15th C pharaohs of the Exodus, there is no obstacle to the Pharaoh being in the area of Goshen on a regular basis. I think your initial premise would be wrong to rule out the 18th Dynasty, especially as the dating in the Biblical text is very specific in saying the 15th Century was the period of the Exodus.

Recommend you get Reliability of the Old Testament by Kenneth Kitchen, as well as Dr. Faulk's book on the Egyptian context of the Ark of the Covenant. The channel Associates for Biblical Research is a group of Christian archaeologists who hold to early date, and the series Patterns of Evidence also defends and early date. The late date is defended by Egypt expert James Hoffmeier's books cited in the video. The book 'Unwrapping the Pharaoh's' is a defense of the early date. IP's movie is a good defense of the late date, and I recommend watching it more then once. I recommend the channel and books I mentioned. There is also great archaeological evidence for the rest of the Old Testament. For new Testament, the book 'why trust the Gospels' by Williams and 'the Birth or Christianity: the first twenty years' are very scholarly. For proof that Jesus is God, read 'The Case for the Deity of Christ' book also from Amazon. The newest edition of 'Evidence that Demands a Verdict' also gives a good overview of the prophecies of Jesus and the resurrection, which you can get on audio or in book form.

I wonder if he disputed any of the other migrations of the ancient near East, or just the Israelites? Also there are at least 5 different secular explanations of the origin of Israel besides the Exodus, so which one does he defend and how does he refute the others? Or does he just reject the Exodus and has no explanation for the origin of Israel? Because the Exodus gives evidence of miracles, which refutes his unbelief, I can imagine why he would be biased against it. The prophecies of Moses were fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Christ, and Christ affirmed the Exodus, so evidence for the prophecies of Christ and the resurrection are also good evidence for the Exodus.

The names data pretty much makes the "later legend" theory impossible, as that is not the kind of thing anyone would have been able to fake in the 5th century BC (or whenever exactly one wants to place the supposed invention) no matter how hard they tried - the necessary simple would not have available.

@@magnificentuniverse3085 If I may: 1 Kings says that the Temple was built 480 years after the Exodus. In Judges, Jephtah says that Israel has been in the land for 300 years. Also, all the events recorded in Joshua, Judges and 1/2 Samuel cannot fit into the mere 200 years left by a late, Rameside Exodus. Pharaoh Merenptah (reigned from 1220 or 1210 to 1200) mentions Israel on a stele among defeated enemies. He already places them in the land of Canaan.

Dear@@str.77 , To add to your list, I am also impressed by the dating and sequence of the findings in the excavations at Jericho (Tell es-Sultan), Ai (Khirbet el-Maqatir), The Late Bronze Age I altar on Mt. Ebal (it was found beneath the Iron Age altar), Hazor (Tel Hazor) and Shiloh (Khirbet Seilun, also called Tel Shiloh). The dating of ceramics in each of these excavations, supports Late Bronze I (15th century BC), which is consistent with the early Exodus perspective. These sites are a part of the sequence of the conquest as described in the Joshua Documents and Israel's pre-monarchical period. (Note: Late Bronze II for Shiloh) Dr. Falk told me that there are problems with the identification of Khirbet el-Maqatir as being the City of Ai, during Joshua's day. He offered no elaboration of his contention. Admittedly, I can't help but to wonder if his alleged problem was that it did not fit his perspective of dating -- of the late Exodus. I think he needs to make a video identifying and explaining the problems he perceives with the identification of Khirbet el-Maqatir as Ai. Dr. Falk contested the idea that there is evidence of conflagration, during the Late Bronze Age I, found in the excavation of Hazor. I assured him that this is what is in the excavation report, and sent him the documentation of where he can find a summary of the 2021 excavation report of Hazor, online, This excavation summary mentions evidence of such, in "Area M". (www.hazor-excavations.org/excavations-reports/tel-hazor-2001/) Dr. Falk did not respond. Perhaps he didn't read my response and references; I don't know. I haven't heard from him again. Frankly, there is a lack of solid, unambiguous evidence in Egypt concerning the date of the Exodus, and I believe that, in his video, Michael gave strong, rational reasons why we shouldn't expect to find much. (thanks Michael, for making that so clear). One more point on this issue ! I recall hearing Hoffmeier tell of a question he asked Manfred Bietak (the director of excavations at Avaris). Hoffmeier asked, "How much have we excavated in Tell el-Dab'a (Avaris)". After 70 seasons of excavations (2 seasons per yr., for 35 yrs), Bietak said, "we have excavated about 3%". Who would draw a definitive conclusion after considering 3% of the evidence, that may be there ? Food for thought !! This being the situation, I think a significant key to identifying the date of the Exodus, is the evidence for the conquest. There is a lot to take into consideration in the excavations of the cities of the conquest. What theory best fits the evidence that we are finding in the excavations of the cities of the conquest ?? Be Well, DZ

In fact, the textual evidence directly refutes it as the texts contain language not used, and that would be unknown to, Jews living in 6th century Babylon. It is likely that the Pentateuch contains source material from the 10th century if it wasn't actually written then. There is no causal link between Old Testament stories on other ancient Near Eastern myths. This theory has been debunked since the 19th century when it was first made. Comparisons between the Old Testament and other ANE stories are superficial at best and any detailed examination of the texts will reveal they have significant differences. The Sargon Birth Legend likely dates to the end of the 8th century during the reign of Sargon II, who invented the birth legend when he took on Sargon of Akkad's name. The Birth Legend comes form 4 tablets, 3 from the Neo-Assyrian period (934-604) and one from the Neo-Babylonian period (625-539), the exact dates are unknown. It doesn't matter when during those times the tablets were made, any date is over 1000 years later then when Sargon actually lived in 2000 BC. The flood myth from Gilgamesh doesn't appear in the actual poem until the 7th century. Maybe you should read some real history, lol. This theory has been dead for almost 300 years.

@harrymaurer7984
@harrymaurer7984 2 жыл бұрын
@@DarrenGedye Actually Darren, it’s a little more complicated than that. You see… Avaris was the capital of the Hyksos (people from the Levant area) from about 1680-1550 BC. The Egyptian pharaoh Ahmose is the one who defeats them and takes their capital city Avaris. This marks the end of the “Second Intermediate Period” of Egypt. The Semitic population significantly decreases at that time (1550) and the buildings and everything from that time on are mostly Egyptian. In fact, Ahmose even had a palace built right on top of the former Hyksos fortifications of that time. The remaining Semitic people were enslaved and scattered around Egypt. This is attested to not only it Egyptian texts but also the archeological record. It’s such a significant event that many people including Manetho had linked it to the Exodus itself (roughly 1550BC). But it’s unlike the Exodus because the Hyksos are kicked out not leaving of their own free will. The people expelled are also the leaders of the government and military not the others many of whom were enslaved. All of this matches the early 1446 date of the exodus. That’s because you have Ahomse the Pharaoh that did not know Joseph taking over. So the depopulation of Avaris as far as the Semities are concerned happens in 1550 BC not the 13th century as you claim.

I still favor the early Exodus and do not find some of your points for the later Exodus convincing enough. There are a lot of hanging lose ends that left your case open for me, though I understand there is more to come on this issue. Of course I have heard some of your points in Dr. Falk's videos, so not really a lot of new information. I really appreciate the presentation methodology that you use to express the points concisely and clearly (that is an aspect that Dr. Falk is severely deficient in). I also appreciate the objectivity, civility and respect you take in countering opposing views and perspectives, particularly in relation to other brothers in Christ with who you disagree. You mentioned some people who have opposing perspectives, by name, but in a manner of factual consideration, without making derogatory remarks about them. I think this is how the body of Christ should handle these situations were we disagree. This is something that really bothers me when Dr. Falk makes derogatory remarks about the people that oppose his perspective, calling them "liars" and implying they are dishonest people. It is my understanding that this is not an attitude a Christian should present. It kind of turns me off of Dr. Falk. I don't know why he does that. I like the way you handle it. You just disagree with their perspective, without making any implications concerning their motives (after all, what human can really judge the intentions of their heart). @@tinyjim123 it says that Pharaoh and his army were swepted into the Red Sea. Do you think that his army died, but Pharaoh somehow survived ? If this verse doesn’t mean that Pharaoh died, then logically that means his army didn’t die either, which is nonsense.

@@INFINITUMSPIRIT no. this is a natural explanation for a Natural Exodus. not a supernatural explanation for a Supernatural Exodus. the "God" of the Bible, יהוה, is still just a character. (in fact, accepting that he is merely a character in a book explains a lot). and i'm still an atheist.
