Let’s get straight to the point. I am a newbie video creator. My honest opinion after 5 months with this cam. Just Get the Insta360 x3. It is so MUCH more than our phone cameras or even the best action cams! I will tell you why below.
First and foremost, you don’t really have to do anything to get some fantastic and unique-looking footage. Just turn on the cam, extend the stick (or mount it anywhere) and go on skiing, running, jumping, riding, gliding or whatever you do. Don't worry about framing, lighting, settings. Enjoy the adventure and the people you are with. The x3 will take care of everything for you. How so? Well, it simply records… e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g around you. Literally. That way you don’t miss that ‘perfect shot’, or any other shot for that matter. Also the Insta360 cameras have a way to make the footage look a bit better than it really is even in standard mode (not vivid). The skies, sun, clouds etc. Not sure how it is done technically, but everything seems to look a little more... 'spectacular' and pleasing to the eye when recorded with the Insta360 cam. Might not be to everyone's liking of course, but I think most people will be happy with that effect. It's subtle enough.
The second huge advantage of a 360 cam is that it opens a world of creative options. You can get that super close inside-the-action perspective, or a drone-like crazy wide shots thanks to double 180-degree fisheye lenses. And switch between the views anytime in post production. Watch the video again to see what I mean by that. And bear in mind that I am an absolute amateur. The video was created with about 90% of @insta360 x3 footage and 100% free video software (Insta360 Studio + Davinci Resolve). In fact, I had a lot of other footage, mostly from our phones - rather good ones like Pixel 7 pro or S21. But it's quality was simply not on par with what the x3 recorded.
The third advantage, probably the biggest one for me, is the loads and loads of fun that you get with the editing when you get back home. For some it may be a disadvantage (the need for editing in post) and fair enough. But I had almost as much fun as during the ski trip itself. It’s like the free big bonus you get with the 360 cam :) The recorded footage was so good, so crazy and funny that my mind was racing with ideas on how to get the best shots, smooth transitions and fit everything into a 10-minute video. And don’t fret. The Insta360 Studio (free editing software) is very simple to use. There are hundreds of tutorials on KZbin. You will learn all you need in 20 minutes.
Are there any disadvantages of Insta360 x3? Of course. The picture quality, mainly resolution - is lower than in most decent action cams - but still better when compared with flagship smartphone cams. The lenses of 360 cams are much more exposed - so I wouldn’t take my x3 for some extreme biking, downhills etc. Any old GoPro will be a much better choice for that kind of activity. For Slo-mo and underwater videos, standard action cams would also be a better choice. And that’s about it.
The build quality of x3 is very good. Battery life is excellent (didn't need a spare battery even once). No issues with the software. The price is comparable to other action cams on the market and there are always some promos. Check the @MotoFeelz channel. Lots of great videos. I got my x3 from his referral link with free motorcycle kit.
Allright. Get in the game and let me know if you have any questions. And if anyone is considering waiting for the Insta360 x4, that’s an option too. It will be even better. Just stay patient as it will be released most likely in the second half of 2024.
