Insta360 x4 8K Test | Tygart Lake, WV

This is a test of the Insta360 x4's 8K video. You can pan the view on a mobile device or computer but for a more immersive experience it should be viewed on a VR headset.

Hi, how did you manage to upload this video in 8k format? I have the same camera insta360 x4 but when shooting a video in 8k format and when uploading the video to KZbin the highest number is 4k. I tried a lot through the Studio program on the PC but I did not succeed 😅

Yes... it is very frustrating. I experienced the same problem. After I uploaded this video it was only available up to 4K for about 5 days then, finally, KZbin recognized it as 8K. So it appears the only thing we can do on KZbin is wait. BUT, I now post my immersive content to DeoVR. It is way ahead of KZbin when it comes to hosting 360 and VR180 content. I see you got the new Insta360 x4. Do you think it’s worth the upgrade? I love my X3 and don’t think I need anything better at the moment. Quick question. Did you encode this as H.264 or H.265. I’ve noticed on mine and this one it’s 720P by default and I have to manually select higher resolution. I’ve been encoding everything at H.265 lately. I think that defaults to a higher resolution on playback but not sure. I’m still experimenting.

Hello! Yes, I did... and, to be honest, at this point I have mixed feelings about it. I also love my x3 and there are some things about the x4 that I find a little annoying and a couple things down right frustrating. For starters, it would not work on my iPad mini 4 (which my x3 worked on just fine) so I had to buy a new phone. And, even with my new phone, it doesn't connect to the Insta360 app reliably. It takes two or three tries to connect every time. Maybe firmware will eventually fix this. The x4 has noticeably more detail than the x3 but not extraordinarily more and the standard video mode is a bit too punchy with lots of purple fringing in bright areas. When I view 360 degree videos on my Quest 2, the x3's and the x4's videos look the same. Of course the Quest 2 doesn't play 8k. On my son's Quest 3 (which does support 8k playback) the x4's 360 videos look a lot better. Bullet time shots are much better on the x4 but I don't really use that a whole lot. Basically I'm still getting my bearings with it and I certainly don't regret getting it but unless you're publishing 8k, 360 videos for higher end VR platforms I believe you could skip this version and still be very happy with the x3. I'll let you know if I change my mind at any point. ;) Oh, and this video was encoded using H265.

@@WildWonderfulWeekends Thanks for the in-depth feedback. I colleague of mine is in Hawaii at the moment and I convinced him he had to purchase an X3 before he left. I can tell him he doesn't need to have buyers remorse now. He got the bundle from Costco so it was a good deal. I watched your other video last night with the review of the X4. Good information. I'm going to stick with the X3. My next device will be a drone I can do work with. I have the Mini 2 right now which is awesome for the price. I binge watched a few of your drone videos last night. I'm thinking about a Mavic 3 classic but I'll add those comments on your drone videos.

@@Nautisphere Absolutely, from my experience with the x4 so far, I believe you and your friend will be more than happy hanging onto the x3 a bit longer. If I discover something that blows me away about the x4 I will definitely be making videos about it and let you know. Nice, the Mavic 3 classic is an excellent drone. Hi I was surprised with how nice this video looks on my Quest3. I am wondering if I am just wanting to record 360 video for uploading to youtube how labor intensive is it, is it just record and upload, or is there a lot of processing or encoding needed? I read somewhere that youtube alters the quality of 360 video, but your video looks decent to me. Thank you.

Thanks for checking out my video and for the feedback! If you want to add nice, 3D text or use color grading, mixing music... stuff like that, you'll want to use some pro video editing software that can work with 360 video (Premiere or Davinci Resolve). But this video was simple. I just shot it, exported it from Insta360 studio, and then uploaded it to KZbin. Zero stress. The only thing, is KZbin can take up to 2 whole days to process your video as 8k, that gets a little frustrating.
