I cried so hard after watching this video. Was diagnosed with Cyclothymia and Borderline Personality Disorder. I recently tested for ADHD and was diagnosed with that too; my father had antisocial disorder and depression; my mom was diagnosed with histrionic disorder.. all my life, I felt alien, isolated and suicidal. but I also was a happy, bright and loving person. it was hard to understand why and how i saw so much beauty but would take myself to such dark places. I hid it well until I moved to NYC to pursue my craft with my daughter.I started experiencing anxiety recently and understood it as, a side effect of suppressing and hiding my emotions for so long to be strong for my daughter. Eventually, my symptoms got worse and it is now unmanageable. I feel we do live in this culture that you can just overcome it. I My body and mind forced me to realize I just couldn't will my depression away. I stay in the house a lot still, but now i see a counselor once a week. after watching this video, I now know I need more help and that its okay to get help. Thank you for sharing this; i am so much more calm about all the things going on. The courage this took, I hope to one day pass on.

Jayla P. awe...my heart goes out to you. And thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your experience. Please don't hesitate to get whatever help you need! Because when you do it for yourself, you do it for your daughter too! I tried everything and as much as I am anti-medication, I can't be anymore because it has changed my life! The natural way wasn't enough for what my brain required and to get my anxiety /depression under control. Although I don't take medication for my ADHD because I find that I can manage it a bit through diet and exercise. There is hope, and one day you will pass it on. You're not an alien and you're not alone!

Hey Nikisha! I am a college student, and I look up to you and your courage to bump opinions out of the way and speak on your reality. There is so much stigma around these topics, but you are right that it's crucial to get the word out and let people know they aren't alone. You are a beautiful person, and it made me happy to see this. Peace :)

I can't believe how on time this video was for me. I'm 7 months prego with my 2nd child and just got off the phone with my father crying my eyes out because I can't seem to do anything with my life. I'm college educated but I don't have the courage to get a job. I hate going out during the day because I prefer to be unseen. I'm extremely temperamental and I'm trying to parent a 3 year old who's showing signs of ADHD. And I'm like you, I'm a lover of holistic treatment but I appreciate the way you broke down the importance of building neuron connections. I will do more research on SSRs and possibly try a pharm approach post partum. Thank you so much for your transparency because if u didn't help anyone else please know that you did a ton for me.

I don't think I have ever connected with a person more than you right now. There is someone else who feels this to. I don't have ADD or ADHD, I don't think At least, but I do know I suffer from anxiety and depression. I tried committing suicide at 15 as well and I am currently going through things as well. I understand completely when you talk about not going outside it has been 2 weeks since I have stepped outside. I only feel comfortable going out with someone. I am even horrible at math lol. I don't know what I am going to do to get out of this, life is to hectic and there are so many unknown variables. I fell trapped and like I'm suffocating. All I know is that you just gave me so much hope and have possibly saved my life and I don't know how I can express the love a gratitude I have for you. Thank you. You have shown me that it does get better. A lot of my anxiety and depression come from the fears of rejection, being unsuccessful, not being loved or being lonely and you are living proof that someday you can be happy and you can find love and you can be successful. Thank you, thank you so much!!

Thank you so much for your transparency. I feel like you have mostly told my story instead of you telling your own. I also have GAD and I also suffer with Dysthymia or low level depression and it has made my life so difficult!! I find it hard to complete things, hard to concentrate, and I avoid people, places and things that cause me stress. The people part is worse. Imagine how difficult it starts to get when you avoid people's calls and limiting yourself on social media because you want to disappear to them. It is bad. And I know it is a huge problem. I cannot handle high pressure jobs. My job in corporate America was a hard experience and I do feel so much better in the arts (I am working on being a writer), as well as in the health field, where I can be in a caregiver role. I love the feeling it gives me. I have done therapy in the past but my doctor seemed to think I was okay because I was able to express myself and can be sociable and funny. But I am not when I am alone, or with my family who sees me all the time. I have moments of clarity, and normalcy but I tend to fly off the handle quickly and get angry very fast. You have convinced me to find another doctor who can really help me the way I need to. Thank you so much for helping me to realize I am not alone.

Thank you got sharing your story. I've been diagnosed with anxiety disorder and depression during my sophomore year in college. I used to cry for days and lock myself up in my room. Also, I was known as the miserable child growing up. I used to be sad and worry all the time. When I found this out, It was hard for me because my family do not believe in mental illness. I remember telling my mom that I had suicidal thoughts and she yelled at me. If you can guess it didn't make the situation better. I am much better now because I have support of my friends, went to therapy, and have a clearer understanding of my illness. I would control it for a while but when the pressure is on again, it comes back. Right now, I'm a senior in college and my anxiety attacks are happening again. The crying for days and constant worrying whether or not I'm going to graduate plagues my life. When you said that "putting things off because you feel overwhelmed", that's me! I hate the stigma that mental illness has especially the black community. I feel like because of the illness I can be perceived as a lazy person or 'miserable' and non social person. And I'm far from it.

Mykalee McGowan thank you so much for your support and for sharing your personal battles. I couldn't agree more that we as a community need to get rid of the stigma because it's hurting us. Please don't be ashamed to go and get the help you need to live a fully productive life. And if that means medication, then so be it!

Thank you so very much for putting your heart on your sleeve and breaking out of the stigma. I blame that stigma for being the biggest reason I was unknowingly trapped in my own undiagnosed ADHD for 37 years. I was ignorant, my family was ignorant, and even every doctor I ever saw was ignorant. You are not alone. Thank you for being a light and a voice in a very dark and quiet corner.

Wow! Nikisha, thank you for sharing this, I can relate to the whole skipping school thing and dropping out, I have always felt like I have ADD. I wasn't a hyper child or anything but it was hard for me to stay focused I could get bored so easily, I was also a huge daydreamer in class. I have never been diagnosed but I think I should go see a specialist, I have always been a little ashamed to admit something was wrong with me, but after seeing this video i'm really inspired.

Mrsnik rog thank you so much for sharing your experience! Not being able to focus and getting bored easily are definitely two of the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. Don't be ashamed! There are a lot of super bright and successful people who have ADHD. The way our minds work can be such a blessing for certain areas in life. We tend to be better in the arts and being creative because our mind is so active.

Thank you for sharing your personal story. I too was personally moved on the morning when I first heard about Titi Branch. She graciously attended my show and we shared such warm moments, I too decided to address the issue of mental illness in our community.Most people don't realize that mental illness tends to show up in early 20's - 30s (when young people are off to college on their own). It's so important to feel supported. May I also suggest yoga (especially Kundalini which focuses on the breath and meditation) I know as you are healing others that is a powerful healing is happening for you. Sat Nam

Although I did not watch this in one sitting, this post was right on time! ( I may have some ADHD, too!)Thank you so much!. I too have depression and it started in my undergrad of college. From then, it has been a thorn in my side along with learning disability. I also had struggles with suicidal thoughts. It was hard telling my mom about it and she understood my need to go to therapy. Growing up in church, it seems that it was expected of you to 'have it all together' spiritually, and there have been challenges and changes with that. For the most part, I love my spiritual family dearly. Depression is one of those things that is so taboo to talk about in church. Because people still think, you're a Christian= you're perfect, you are immune to problems. That thinking is backwards and so far from the truth! With the help of friends (who shared the same struggle as me! Go figure!) and studying the Word ( characters in the Bible like Job and Paul), I have learned that I can use the weakness to help others... In the past 10 years there have been recovery groups to provide a safe place to talk it out, which helps also. Thank you for this!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. My son was diagnosed with severe ADHD early on in life. It has been a real struggle for me as a mother who after having two children being diagnosed, realized that I too suffered from ADD. I wish someone had figured this out when I was growing up. It would have made things so much better had I been treated. But I digress, what I want to say is that I wanted to cry after listening to your testimony because what you described is exactly what my son has been going through. He recently had a break down, he expressed a desire to end his life and couldn't stop crying, and had to be hospitalized. I am so frustrated because they held him for a week and did absolutely NOTHING to help him. He is 20 years old now so I am no longer allowed to make medical decisions for him. This also frustrates me. He has all the symptoms you mentioned, stomach aches, trouble sleeping, constant worrying, difficulty being around other people,feeling awkward, he spends a lot of his time when not working or in school, sitting in front of a computer. Everything escalates in his mind. He automatically draws the worst conclusion to any scenario. I like you rather use holistic methods but recognize that he needs to be on meds. My frustration is finding the right doctor. Do you have any advice? We live in NY by the way:) I am worried for both y sons. While my oldest doesn't present with anxiety, he is very negative, and always angry. Self medicating . Has no drive. He has so much potential, this was a child who could ace a test without studying, but is working at Starbucks. I know he needs help. I just am having a hard time finding it. Again thank you for sharing your testimony.

You are actually making me evaluate myself and how I deal with and react to things. There are a lot of similarities in some of your anxiety symptoms that I definitely have. I would worry about some of the smallest things that would actually stop me from going to certain events or places due to me worrying about what people think of me or feel about me. Now I know that this is not normal. :-/

Oh my Lord! I'm so happy I came across this KZbin clip! I've been following you for a few years now, but I recently found out about your KZbin channel. I thank you for sharing your experience and indicating facts that are associated with this type of disorder. This past week I have made the decision that I want to cleanse myself from my bad attitude/mood. I don't want to fit the stereotype of the angry black women particularly that I'm now married and working on having children so I'm working on changing my attitude about things for the good of myself, my marriage and my future children...etc. I started meditation which feels great, but I have been this way for so long that I may need more. I had a severe anxiety attack back in college, and since my attack are more like panics and nervousness nearly all the time. Let's not talk about the depression part! I'm freshly new Christian just like you, and I took my concern up to God, and I believe that finding this clip is in connection with my prayers. Thank you so much for your transparency! May God continue to bless you and may your healing be permanent.

It was so bad at one time that I became depressed which led to me having phobias of staying inside the house. I've been reading my Bible, memorizing scriptures, praying, as well as eating healthy, and working out, for the past few years and it has helped tremendously, but my brain still wasn't producing enough serotonin and the frontal lobes of my brain due to the ADHD still weren't stimulated. But I believe God can heal and also this medication helps to build the neurons I don't have, so I wont have to be on it for the rest of my life. God bless you!

HI Nikisha, Im grateful for your post and I appreciate your honesty. I am also living with GAD. I am 34 years old and had been diagnosed a year ago. I was placed on meds (paxil) but was afraid to take it due to the stigma that is attached to being medicated (psychiatric drugs). Your video encourages me to talk to my doc again bat my meds since verbal therapy is not enough. I have a bachelor's degree in English and had aspired to be a public school teacher but is having difficulty passing my high school level exam. However, I managed to pass my Middle school Language Arts exam. Im currently a Substitute Teacher in a urban community. I hate being a sub but is having difficulty passing my exam. I experience terrible anxiety attacks while taking the exam. i requested extra time but my doc refuse to sign the documents. He encourages studying and trying to relax. I do not know what t do at this point. Do you have any suggestions? I also had a child at the age of 17 and I also have a four year old and is in a dysfunction relationship with my son's Dad. I have a depressive personality and often lose touch with reality. Please offer any suggestions where possible. Thanks

When I made up in my mind that I didn't care about people's opinions over things I cannot control I was also 31. I am 35 now and still in therapy. I don't know exactly when I realized that I am anxious but I am seeing a therapist to help me. I know that I will be in therapy for a few years. It is what it is. The formative years are important and things from the past make me anxious about living in the present. I am no longer suicidal but I continue to struggle in social situations. Its hard but keep up the good fight.

i can relate so much to everything. it's getting to the point where it's affected my jobs, it seems like people think they have to coddle my feelings or either frustrated (i pick up on all these microagressions) all the time and now i don't get called for jobs anymore (it's on call) and at my other job it's suggesting that i transfer for more hours which i think is code word to resign because i'm get wayyy less hours so now i'm like freaking out, and this is just one issue which pales in comparison to other problems i have. can you make a video on what you did to get assessed? like how did you bring it up with your doctor? i feel helpless on how to go about everything...

TFS, my 7yr son has been diagnosed with ADHD & Anxiety Disorder and I'm just learning how to help him through out his school year. I have gone through the same thing with my son teachers. I though his behavior change was due to life change when I separated from his father, I glad I look further into reaching out for more help. I've heard so many horror stories of meds and would love to learn more of holistic methods. I don't have any know knowledge of any one on either side of the family having this disorder and honestly it was hard for me to accept.

Thank you! I believe this video and your testimony will push me to go get help. I know Im depressed I just never talk about it because while growing up in school and with my family I was dismissed and labeled lazy and weird. Now that I'm nearing 30 and just getting by emotionally, I would love to feel normal.So again Thank you

i think i have an anxiety disorder but im ashamed to tell anyone. i knew something was wrong when i looked back on how i acted and how i still act now. I used to hide in the bathroom at parties or avoid and make excuses as to why i couldnt go. ive recently been waking up at 5am and 7am and this has been happening for days. and my stomach has been in knots for several months. I always get nervous even when im just simply going to class....i feel like people are just constantly watching me and judging me so i purposely get away from people so that i dont interact with them. i need to see someone about this because im getting worried

You posted this at the right time. I'm still feeling some type of way being on meds and going to counseling for my depression and anxiety. I feel pathetic that I got to this point. It's only been 2wks into my treatment, but I know I need it. The depression knocked me down so hard I can barely get up like I used to. And I've been suffering from anxiety for far too long. This post is a sign to keep going on despite perceived stigma. Thank you so for this. (e-hug)

susiq1121 you're sooo welcome! And don't you dare feel pathetic for being aware enough to realize you had a problem, and being brave enough to go do something about it! You are not pathetic, you are strong! You did the best thing you could do for yourself. When we are able to really look in the mirror and do some deep digging and uncover hurtful, painful things in order to see the bigger picture and then go and get help, that is truly loving yourself and taking care of yourself. So I strongly encourage you to keep on getting whatever help you need to live a healthy life. Forget the stigmas, because someone is always gonna have something to say regardless. It's people like you and I that can break the stigmas. So keep going!

this is so not easy to talk about and I commend you for your bravery. I also suffer from anxiety and I know how HARD , esp in moments of panic. I sought out counseling and I regualrly practice meditation- both of whcih make a tremendous difference in controlling my anixety. If I need to do more in the future, I will..I was wondering if you tried any of those routes? My anxiety doesn't keep me in bed per se, but it does cause panic attacks and stagnation in life(I have been trying to get into graduate school for 2 years). Best of luck with everything - God bless!

I was diagnosed with ADHD in 2006 when I was twenty and I *know* I have depression. I'd say it's mild, but from Aug.-December 31st (yes!), It was pretty bad! I've had both since I was young... I thought It was "normal." The ADD (They told me something like ADD is no longer used, that there is always some form of hyperactivity linked with attention deficit) was so bad, but I never really had behavioral problems... I'm so appreciative. I have struggled with school because I refuse to go back to Adderall, *even though it DID help*, I am very anti-medication, and it's hard and shameful for me to deal with. I know we live in a "pop-a-pill society," but that's NOT me!! I may VERY WELL be throwing away the future God wants for me because I'm too prideful to take medication. God bless you for your transparency and bravery. You're helping a lot of people.
@UrbanBushBabes
@UrbanBushBabes 9 жыл бұрын
ade52286 thank you so much for your encouragement and blessing!!! I agree 100% that we do live in a pill popping society and I was very anti-medication until I realized that there are different contexts in which medication is handled. If taken responsibly and not abused,certain medications change lives and save lives! I realized after experiencing these struggles myself that I'd rather be in support of a person getting whatever help they may need to live a productive life and be able to their full potential. Everyone's situation is different and everyone needs different things. So don't be ashamed, and do whatever you need to do to make sure you're living out God's full purpose for your life.

*cyber hug* Thank you for sharing your story with us who are probably watching & dealing with similarities in their symptoms or know someone who does. Stigma continues to be placed upon mental illness because I feel most people rather think it doesn't exist. Those who are going through this, know that you can function and get through life normally; however there may be some assistance as you mentioned to be in place. Mental illnesses should be nothing that we run from instead embrace, accept and help each other. I feel there is no one alive who does not know one person who is going through some form of mental illness whether it is mild to severe. I think you are very strong Nikisha and have a purpose in your life to touch others, guide them with your knowledge and experience and know it is going to be OK. To hold on, take a deep breath and know it will be manageable and able to cope. For some of us we have to do 5x more than the other person to get through the day. If it is what it takes, we must strive to do this but remain healthy. I like the idea of holistic living and incorporating it into self-care. For those who are undergoing personal challenges, you're not alone. It is better to seek help, advice on how to track your patterns, be mindful of your physiological responses and triggers. Many blessings to you Nikisha and your story will help those in need to first acknowledge where they are, second what steps to take and three say to themselves "I can and will get through this in my life."
