I love that. Make sure to go over every little detail so that way people know he's not skipping over any important details. I hate it when people gloss over stuff when it comes to PC building. For example, when people are talking about hooking up the cables from the front I/O to the mobo, lots of people just say "and then plug the cables into your motherboard". Um, where? How? I'd love to see Linus do a video on that.

@MikeGusFifteen9 жыл бұрын
If you only have one ddr3 module, does it matter which slot you insert it in? I just built my current rig with 8gb module but the CPU liquid cooling unit caused the first slot to get partially blocked. I inserted the ram into the next slot but it feels like there's a memory leak of some sort, especially when I play high performance games like BF4.
@supermann9089 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't unless the slot aren't all the same.
@stopaskingmeformynameonyou1989 жыл бұрын
Mike Gus Fifteen Your mother board manual or user information packet will tell you how to prioritize slots and which need to match if any and how. Generally, motherboards are manufactured differently. It may not always matter to follow what it says, but in doing so, you ensure everything works as intended. For example, my motherboard (ftp://66.226.78.21/manual/Z97%20Extreme4.pdf) manual indicates on page 23 to follow everything Linus just mentioned for probably the same reasons. However, some manufacture may tell you it's better to place memory closer to CPU first if there are other components to consider in your MoBo design. Best suggestion: find out max capacity, and max it, then you don't have to worry about slot priority, you just fill 'em all!!

I like that you know the names of the parts of the motherboard and still got the CPU installed in wrong slot. :D
@TomatoBreadOrgasm11 жыл бұрын
My ASUS X79 has the channels set up so that each memory slot is mirrored with the second slot on that channel across the CPU socket, and as such ASUS recommends that memory be installed in pairs with each stick being on opposite sides of the CPU socket. This board appears to be of the latest generation, does it not work the same way? I think that, ultimately, one must RTFM, odds are issues like RAM placement have been addressed by the manufacturer or patent holder.

I already have 8GB ram single stick installed and after I add another 8GB ram (both are 1.5V, same cas latency shows in cpu-z), the system shows 16GB but only 8usable. I've tried ensure that in bios memory mapping is enabled, reseated the rams as well as go to msconfig and unchecked/untick the maximum memory box in the advanced options of boot tab. None of it works. please help.

This is because the X79 platform has Quad Channel RAM, where as the motherboard he is using is on the Z77 platform which uses Dual Channel RAM.
@DoshNosh19 жыл бұрын
Techquickie Noob question here but... say I have a dual channel motherboard i want to install two sticks of ram into the motherboard. I would therefore use both black channels. If this is the case, what use is the other coloured channel? Since you wouldnt be able to use them to install triple or quad channel ram. Is the other channel for installing separate sticks similar to running two video cards? Also would it be better to use two sticks of 4gb ram (in the black channels (on a dual channel board)) OR use 4 sticks of 2gb ram in both the black and blue channels (again on a dual channel board) thanks for the help!!
@B3tterTh4nU9 жыл бұрын
I believe that 4 sticks of 2 GB would run faster because of having twice as many memory banks (I'm not a hardware expert but this is my intuitive guess and seems to be reflected in the price of RAM); however, 2 sticks of 4 GB would allow you to more easily upgrade in the future (if needed) by simply adding two more sticks of RAM.

Turn caps lock off, and are you sure your motherboard can handle more than 1600MHz? What board are you using?
@boostergold91602 жыл бұрын
Third, the sequence only matters when you have 2 sticks of ram or you have 2 sets of mixed ram modules. I will use the the board you have in the video as an example. See where ur finger is pointing (1:44)... if you had 2 sticks, then you will fill A1, B1 and leave the other slots empty. Always follow the number sequence etched on the board and you can't go wrong. Never go by color code alone because most of the stuff we use comes from Asia and I don't trust those guys. If all ur mem slots were red or black or any other color then you would have no choice but to look at the module sequence on the board to be sure. Read the board and it will make life easy.

Hey. Can someone help me out with my issue. I have 4 GB of RAM on A MSI Global B75MA-E33. The RAM's default that came with that motherboard and I want to upgrade. What RAM should I get or it doesn't really matter which one I get. Would it still run in dual channel mode or would it slow down my PC. Currently I have 1 4GB stick.

The board at the start is a Gigabyte GA-X79S-UP5, then he swaps to a ASUS P7P55D-E Premium which is just an older chipset than the Z77.

So let me get this right. What Linus refer to is that Windows Home Premium (ie windows 8), would not recognise more than 16 GB per slot. Or 16 x 4 = 64 GB is the limit. Right?

Trim js a command that allows an OS to inform an SSD which blocks of data are no longer considered in use and can be deleted, this is due to how the OS deal with deleted files on a HDD, they simply remove the files from the MFT, to make things go faster, which is then rewritten over when new data is placed on the HDD. SSD don't work that way, if a file is deleted from the MFT, it's still on the flash and it won't be overwritten since the SSD consider that part as "used", thus the need for TRIM.
