Installation of Shelly 1l - no neutral & Home Assistant integration

Shelly 1L allows you to control various devices without neutral line (but if you have it - it will work too). I'll be using it to smarten-up my bathroom ventilator. Big bonus is that you can also hook up up to 2 switches/push buttons and can directly trigger relay or be used as binary sensors in Home Assistant
In today's video I'll guide you through the whole process including installation of Shelly 1L with bypass but also configuration and adding it to Home Assistant.

My Shelly Bypass, that looks exactly like yours in the video at 4:30, came with an additional "Shelly Bypass addon" of roughly the same size, which I think is a flat capacitor inside a protective black rubber sleeve, with two wires. The diagram provided shows the Bypass addon also connects to the load in parallel, like the Bypass, and alongside with it. But what does this "add-on" do, and is it mandatory?

I don't have that one it's a new thing that can be used together with Bypass to protect from currency spikes. Because of currency spikes some had problems that Bypass exploded, so this device was added to it in 2022 I think. If you can I would connect it for additional protection.

I have been playing with the settings for some time but found the sweet spot for out bathroom turn on at 80% and have an automation to turn it of if it goes below 77%

Yes, that's really "personal" thing - it depends on so many factors (and season) - currently when it's normal, humidity is below 50% (around 44-48) - when someone is showering, it goes above 60% (62-92%). Best automation would be to track if humidity goes up more then 10% in short amount of time, then to keep vent running until it drops at least 8%. But that would be really complex automation :)

I'm using a CO2 sensor instead. By amazing coincidence when the shower is on, there is also a person in the room producing CO2 ;-) and in any case it is good to increase ventilation when the CO2 level is high, even when you are not taking a shower

@@BeardedTinker thanks, I connected a senseair S8 to an esp-32 and programmed it with esphome to create the sensor. Also added an RGB light to get a visual indication of the air quality. Then just for fun also added a microwave sensor for movement, a light intensity sensor, a temperature sensor and a humidity sensor (but ventilation is controlled by CO2 not humidity as mentioned).

i have 6Watts LED lights in my rooms, will it work with Shelly 1L? as i read i need bypass for small loads, but does it mean i will have constant power consumption because of bypass? How much power it needs ? Not clear from the shelly webpage.

I've read somewhere that Shelly 1L with bypass uses 3W in idle, but that was post not by Shelly but some user. I also couldn't find official info on power consumption.

SO, official documentation says - less then 1W, but I think that's Shelly 1L without bypass. In Facebook group - someone said that bypass is using around 140mAh or around 1.5W - so it should be less a bit less then 3W.

With MQTT type ot the integration, I think you can do it. Not sure about ShellyforHASS custom component/integration - that one also usually has more options than internal HA integration.

I have no MQTT option in the Shelly app for my Shelly 1L. Will it still work with MQTT?

I don't use app for Shelly. Have it installed, but not sure if I configured anything there so far. Go to web interface on 1L and check there. Also, since it now has better CoAP support, this is preferred method of integration, of course, if you are using Home Assistant. But MQTT should still work.

It's possible to put the Shelly1 "basic version" without a neutral at the switch as well. If you use this special circuit hack, you can put it by the light bulb directly. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3rXfqhsi696eKs

But, less of a hack if you use 1L with bypass, and less of possible problems with exposed 110/220V wires. Great proof of concept though!!!

@@BeardedTinker yes you are right the shelly1L is made for that 👍. This Hack was originally intended for the Sonoff MINI , but I thought it would be interesting to try it with the shelly1. It also allows you to put it by the light fixture, if you simply have no other option. I would have covered the whole lot in heat shrink tubing for extra insulation, but I showed it exposed so you can see the workings.
