Possibly, but the S2's weren't generally good with social cues like that. Although chief understood sarcasm when talking to Cortana throughout the original trilogy. ... Isn't the middle child suppose to be the one that gets upity? The oldest is the one that the parents are paranoid over doing something wrong with. The youngest is doted on to make sure they have the same advantages of the first two. The middle is expected to be better then the first but always in the shadow of the first and never given the same attention as the third and as such feels left out and overlooked. At least that is how I always thought of it.

When Locke says “you’re not the only one here because of him”. I think he’s referring to the fact many soldiers chose to become Spartan IV’s because of the Chief. They looked up to him as a hero. This could of been such a powerful moment if Locke added onto his statement. Perhaps something like “we all chased after the Chiefs footsteps one way or another”, or something more deep and meaningful (forgive me Im not a writer).

It's because they are typical marines with upgrades. Most probably volunteered just to get power upgrades and the prestige that came with the name that was built by the IIs and IIIs. There is this quote from a fanfic about the helmets which I like as it shows its importance. "Your helmet is a masterpiece of UNSC military technology. Motion tracker, VISR tech, vision modes and HUD for offensive capabilities, while defensively, it is heavily armored, projects the cranial energy shields, and protects you from radiation, vacuum, chemical, and biological attacks. None of which will help you if you do not have it on. Which the Prometheans took advantage of. As would any competent enemy." - Master Chief, Consequences of Revelation

For the record, I work with a lot of “regular” soldiers (grunts, MPs, engineers) and SF guys (SEAL, DOE, Delta) in my line of work. Though I rather not say what I do in an open forum, I can agree that the “real world” soldier may act like the Spartan 4’s. But I can’t say the same about the SF (Spec Force) guys. They’re one of the most humble and most straight forward guys you’ll ever meet. Kind of guys you would want to have a beer with. That said, I do have respect for all branches of the military but there are the few that I respect above others. I’m not sure what it is about these SF guys, but they have this aura about them... they don’t need to be loud to be heard, don’t need praises, have a switch on there brain to “turn off/on” when they need to and just plain do their best to be under the radar. When it comes down to it, Halo’s“original” Spartans weren’t designed only from the Spartans of the past, but rather and equally with the real world heroes (Special Forces) of today as well.

My father who served in the Pakistan Air Force has similar opinions. He's had a chance to meet members of the SSG (Special Service Group) and SSW (Special Service Wing), described them as no nonesense, stoic and professional with a relaxed/respectful "salook" (which means 'demeanor' or 'conduct' in Urdu) about them. Whereas my father was a lot more loose, playing pranks with their peers, having fun whilst on duty etc. He wasn't a pilot, common misconception, don't think playing pranks piloting a fighter jet is safe lol. Not everyone who serves in an Airforce branch is a pilot, but I digress. I'd wager its practically the same with all SF's around the world which the S2's and 3's are purposefully based off.

I think she wants them to just shut up and do their damn jobs. To just focus and do what their training tells them and to follow orders. Like how we see tactical incompetence among some of the IVs. Sure, it's only a tiny few. But, that's a tiny few among people who were already elite and highly veteran soldiers even before receiving four years of training as Spartans. By then, there is absolutely no excuse for _any_ tactical mistakes or disobedience from any of them barring enemy action or great necessity. Thorn is mostly good in this way. He follows his training, has good tactical sense and awareness, and obeys his orders without bitching about not liking them.

Sadly, the Crimson Emblem that Mega Bloks and Halo 5 uses for Crimson is not actually available in Halo 4 (I just used the "117" one you get from beating Halo 4 on Legendary along with the aforementioned armor).

I like it too. Orion-IVs sounds best because it acknowledges the level of technological development while still recognizing the difference. I get that the UNSC wanted to exploit the PR-boost that came from the Spartan-name but you can also justify reverting to Orion with military respect. According to Mah Boi Zack from the Comics Matter, one of the most striking qualities of U.S. Marines he met was humility. When they were tasked with cleaning up, the buck wasn't passed to the least of the team but instead they all did it together to efficiently finish their duties ASAP and without any rank-pulling shenanigans because at their level of performance they all become intricately familiar with their ultimate fragility as human beings. So that writing would be true to life.

Actually while the Orion project was the grandfather of the Spartan II and III projects the Spartan II's and III's were called such as a nod to the original ancient Spartans, due to the fact that they were taken at a young age to begin training and indoctrination. That was even explained in the books. So technically you would call the IV's Orion II's not Orion IV's.

As I am listening to the audiobook "The Rubicon Protocol", I can assure you the depiction of the Spartan IVs is IMMENSELY better in that book. Exactly what you might imagine Spartain IVs to be like; proud, calm, collected warriors that represent the best of the UNSC, but as they grew up human, they are immensely better psychologically capable of relating to and bonding with regular soldiers. While not the unreal legends of Blue team and the spartan 2s, they are still viewed by their peers as demigods, and they bring hope and courage to the soldiers they meet. They are capable of more than any other soldiers, and they are above all else determined to win. The Master Chief is even noted for saying that while the Spartan IVs don't have training quite on par with the spartan IIs, they more than make up for it with tenacity, technology, and comradery. It is clear in the book that they are truly spartans of the future. I wish we could have seen them. Many of the dead spartans in Infinite are featured in the book.

A mission with a 0% survival ratio and as such no plan for extraction. The second class of 300 was better but 90% still died only after a few missions. The 3s had a special detachment called 'headhunter' made up of 3s that survived 2 such missions and as such were given more care... if only by a small margin. The 3rd class was made up of ?315? but most of them were deployed off planet at the beginning of their book with only a few dozen on their training world of Onyx and they are the primary ones talked about. It's not that more 4s have died then 3s, its just that when it was that Bungy did different things with them and 343 only seems to only care about the games and generality then the detail work. That is not an excuse, Del Rio was stated in the books to be as much a political appontie to command in UNSC Infinity as anything else and he only treated the 4s in the same manner as the ODST. yes maybe this makes sense for hyping Chief up but it makes no sense to me that a military branch is gonna spend big money on weapons (spartans) that are not fully lethal and reliable and long lasting. When you send soldiers and weapons systems to the battlefield, you cant afford to have any of them be incompetent, you know? It would sit with me better if the IVs were designed to fulfill a different role than IIs, one that doesn't require them to be enhanced emotionless supersoldiers taking on impossible possibly suicidal and species-saving missions. That's probably what you were getting at, but i dont like the idea that IVs were or should be designed to "fail". Buck was an ODST so he knows how to be professional, but he uses his humor to make situations less tense and help him keep calm. Any psychologist can tell you humor in tense situations can actually be helpful. The spartan IV’s are supposed to be inferior to previous generations. It’s the whole reason Halsey was branded a criminal. She kidnapped kids and turned them into soldiers, making them fight each other and only the strongest the soldiers survived. Marines in Halo are very happy-go-lucky, so it doesn't really surprise me how careless they are. They are augmented marines and ODSTs that volunteered for the Spartan Branch. They are amped up and their role model was the chief. To see them stop what they are doing to watch this Legendary Titan walk past them just shows that no matter how much they do, by being a professional Spartan or making shoddy mistakes, they would NEVER amount to the level that Gen IIs are at. Not in combat zones. Established bases are one thing, or anything considered a “safe zone” even though you are aware your actively in combat. @@Reegor any place designated for war is a combat zone even if there are areas that one can take a breath. All of reach was designated as a combat zone. But you're right Master Chief is much more mature than the newer spartans however there is a lot to mention. Master Chief used to be really childish and sometimes still is. Remember him scaring a grunt by saying "boo" he had no reason to do that other than to entertain himself. He also does what he wants even if it's against orders and you can say well he does what he wants because it is what should be done or because it's the smarter move, well it's not. Dr. Halsey said it herself Chief isn't the smartest spartan, the strongest spartan, or the fastest but he is the luckiest spartan. I would honestly just chalk it up to him being immature when he was younger, and obviously the newer spartans are younger so they are going through the same immaturity phase, but has matured much more because he has had the most time to. Even Spartan 2s of halo wars were immature. If you are fighting wars all the time usually the best way to keep morale up is to have a sense of humor. That being said you are right chief is definitely best with his behaviors and I think they probably made spartan 4s just because they wanted more super soldiers and didn't do the proper screening or training. And to give echo the benefit of the doubt they did not know how gone to shit reach was going to get, they only took their helmets off after clearing a building before they knew all of reach was invaded

@@blaketfg9374 yes I understand a combat zone, that’s what I said any established base or safe zone even if your actively in combat. Just like all of halo was a combat zone but when they had taken the butte, master chief didn’t even have is mjolnir armor on when he want to talk to Silva. Because they’d taken the butte back and established it as alpha base, or a safe zone. I remember chief getting tossed from the gravemind right into a hot zone with the prophet and brutes all in a closed room then him landing in front of a grunt, which yea he said boo and scared him. Maybe he should have been more tactical…. Interesting example I guess… As far as chief doing what he wants it’s because he has tactical command once he hits the ground. As long as the mission assigned gets completed, once chief hits the ground he’s in charge of everything and everyone unless he runs into an officer in charge of another squad. Which means he does what he wants because that’s the point of his rank…. I’ll give you the comment about those wash outs that are red team in halo wars I guess? As far as chief being the “best behaved” it’s not because he wants to. He’s squad commander of all the spartan 2s. He was taught to not join in,to separate himself and no show emotion so as to maintain respect among his “subordinates”. Really behavioral examples you’re mentioning Really have nothing to do with the simple disciplines of combat that had been beat into all of their heads in a very brutal fashion. While I agree with all the points you mentioned, there is one that I feel should have also been mentioned that gives context (but still doesn't excuse) to the S-IV's behavior. I don't doubt the S-IV's training, nor their worth as super soldiers as we have clearly seen that they are capable of great feats. However, I believe that their lack of discipline stems from the fact that, compared to the II's and III's at least, there is no real threat to Humanity when they are introduced. They are machines of war in a time of peace. The II's and III's were pushed to the brink along with Humanity and every fight was to the death. And while the common impression of a "true Spartan" is one that is disciplined and focused, they are still human. There are plenty of Spartans who have made wisecracks, shown overconfidence, or otherwise just been very vocal. Emile and Johnson come to mind. But take Emile out of context and place him in a time of relative peace, much like what the IV's have experienced. How does his behavior come across then? The II's and III's were regarded as badasses and heroes because they overcame insurmountable odds against a ruthless foe. And sometimes they didn't survive. The stakes were always high. This is likely why Chief at the end of Halo 4 garnered so much attention from the other Spartans. No doubt all of them have heard of their Legendary feats and accomplishments, but for them to see it in person? The man before them had single-handedly stopped the Didact from composing Earth and lived to tell the tale. Meanwhile, what threats do the IV's face? They have received the most advanced technology the UNSC has to offer. They have been trained by Spartans. And what do they fight? Robots and remnants of a faction that, at its greatest, couldn't take down a weaker version of Humanity. The IV's constantly let their guard down, are overconfident, and display generally sloppy behavior because they have nothing to lose. You mentioned it briefly, but given how the end of Halo 5 gave rise to another great threat to Humanity, Infinite will truly test the new generation of Spartans and give them a chance to earn the name.

A lot of people highlight what the spartan II's and III's have done as remarkable, and I can't argue it is. However, take into account where the IV's are coming from. They are handpicked from the best soldiers among the ODST (already considered elites), and other branches. That means in all likelihood as we've already seen many of the IV's probably fought in the same battles as the Spartans. They had to survive those insane odds as base level humans with inferior armor. That's impressive, and a lot of people seem to forget that. These guys will have seen their squad mates, their brothers die. They will have seen a great many other horrors that war brings, and to be able to get through that would accumulate mental toughness. None of this is portrayed by Majestic, but that doesn't mean people should discount every other spartan IV as if they will be the same. Majestic is depicted as a group of fresh faced soldiers on their first tour of duty, and that's not remotely accurate to what a IV would be when battle experience, training, and augmentation are taken into account. You'd see a lot more IV's with an attitude similar to Loche's vs the childish attitude that we actually had due to sloppy writing, and awful, overused cliches.

My take on it is that the spartan iv are supposed to be more “human”. The point of the spartan program was to take children and turn them into the ultimate fighting machines. He had much of his humanity stripped from him because of his time in training and combat. Mission first and everything else second. The IVs had relatively normal lives compared to chief. They received their training, augmentations, and equipment like a spartan but were not excessively groomed to be machines like previous spartan gens. Cortona asked chief which one of them was the machine and I think the IVs were written to drive that home. I think him finding the humanity he never had could potentially be a big plot point in infinite, realizing that he is still human and that he can’t just be a fighting machine forever.

Honestly I like the IVs. They have personalities and are the most human of the Spartan generations. Granted they're flawed and some are reckless but they're also new in the game. It's my hope we'll see thoughtful and ethical minded Spartans like Thorne and Vale, level headed ones like Buck, and professional hunters like Locke. It's these Spartans that are meant to carry the torch. I think the IVs are more than capable of carrying the Spartan name. They are the result of countless innovations and painful lessons gleaned from previous generations. They are the true heirs of the original Orion Program without the moral qualms that marred the IIs and IIIs and are equipped with updated tech. Also bear in mind EVERY S-IV is a combat veteran and a career soldier. They're battle hardened and are killers in their own right. The fact they survived a majority of the war without their new Spartan augmentations and Mjolnir powered armors speak well of their skills given good deal of them were special forces. Remember, ODSTs aren't the only special forces the UNSC had in its disposal. What about UNSC Army Airborne, Marine Force Recon, the Army Rangers (and Green Berets), or Navy SEALS? What about the Spetnaz or other special forces teams of other nations that still exist within Earth's regional militaries? Or even highly trained spies within ONI? All these warriors are well within their right to be called Spartans if they were chosen and accepted to be one.

The reason Spartan 4s are undisciplined is because they don't have 051-Kurt training them. I had this out-there theory that Kurt is somehow still alive, and it was based on the passage of Dr. Halsey's comment in Ghosts of Onyx. The statis pods that contained team Katana was said to be able to survive any form of destruction because it didn't exist on the same spatial axis. The explosion would just phase through the target. Now I know it's unlikely that Kurt survived by jumping into one, but I don't see why they would bring up his connection to Forerunner tech and symbols that he went through during his final stand. He was written to feel a connection to the shield world and had an instinctual understanding of their writing. Like he knew what was written in the ancient Forerunner facility but at the same didn't understand a word. Why do that and kill hm a few hours later?

Spartan I's is an honorific for those who participated in the Orion Project, retroactively paying homage to the predecessors who trailblazed the first series of enhancements that made the Spartan II Program possible, so it's definitely deserved. Spartan II's & III's actually fit the designation because their combat training and military indoctrination began in childhood just like they did in ancient Sparta. Spartan IV is another situation where the name is really just an honorific based on superficial comparisons to previous generations. Even the 4's know they don't measure up and it shows in how prickly and insecure they are about their status as Spartans. Still, they are expected to go out in the galaxy and do a Spartan's job so the least the UNSC could do is let them wear the name. They may not have been child conscripts but the training and enhancement procedures they have to endure are in some ways harder than the other programs. They weren't blank slates so they had to unlearn a lot of bad habits and relearn a lot of instinctive skills that the enhancements had thrown out of whack. Spartan 2's & 3's went through this at puberty before their bodies had finished growing so they hadn't had the chance to establish a baseline for their abilities whereas the 4's were already fully grown and had spent years relying on the strength and reflexes they already had. Bit of a dramatic transition, I would think. And then their augmentations were a lot more extensive, invasive, and high maintenance as well. Almost all of their organs altered or replaced, way more cybernetic and mechanical implants, strict diets and constant fine-tuning between missions. It's not like the UNSC doesn't make them earn the name Spartan even before they send them off to battle.

Whole point of Mjolnir mk4/5/6 is it has no ceiling. It works by taking your brain signals threw a port in the base of the skull and moving before you do. This is covered in the books the first time John, Fred and Alice put it on, The suit moved faster than there actual limbs and took time to compensate for, Going form jerky movement to fluid. the more time they spent in the armour the faster their reaction times got. What we see in games is them slowed down to give us a chance to play. In the game you dodge missiles and projectiles moving at 1000m/s if not more. Gen2 Works with the wearer not for them and as they are not as enhanced as Spartan IIs a Spartan IV cannot be as fast or as strong. this is why the fight with Locke should not have been a contest it should have been over far sooner. John held back as if he didn't he could would have killed Locke. Now sure John is pushing 46-48 at this stage even with time in Cryo hes is getting on in years but as we have no benchmark for age on the Spartan IIs lets argue he is getting slower. BUT if thats what it takes for a Spartan II to almost lose is be twice the age of a Spartan IV I think that shows just how incredible there abilities are.

I think by necessity, what we expect when we think "Spartan" is going to have to change with the IVs. While I agree that changing their name would remove the comparison, I don't see it happening, so the comparison will continue to be made. From the jump, the IVs are at a disadvantage and they weren't helped by 343's earlier portrayals. IIs and IIIs take the term 'career soldier' to an extreme that can't be matched. The IVs view being a Spartan as a promotion or new MOS. IIs and IIIs view being a Spartan as who and what they are. It simply isn't the same, and that's a good thing, because I think we can all agree child soldiers, however much the ends justified the means, is not something we would like to continue using. With regards to your main complaints about the IVs shown, I sort of do and sort of don't agree with you. Fireteam Majestic, at least Madsen and DeMarco, are cocky and arrogant, and frankly, it's not all that surprising. Some people just are that way, regardless of it being warranted, let alone being a supersoldier. I don't mind banter, hell Chief is full of one liners and snark and Noble Team spends quite a bit of time, in the field mind you, bantering and I loved it. Their lives are stressful enough without being able to laugh every now and then. As for Palmer, I'm in a very tiny minority who didn't mind her character. I think her first line to Chief is thrashed because it didn't land, but honestly? Imagine meeting your idol and getting flustered and trying to be witty but it falls flat. That's about as human as it gets imo. Maybe the IVs don't bother me because I don't expect them to be IIs or IIIs, they're IVs, flaws and personalities and mistakes included. As for Locke, he's as emotionally controlled and professional as you want the IVs to be. I think his line about Chief inspiring or saving him showed that regardless of his personal feelings, they have a job and they're going to do it, regardless of the cost or their opinion, which is the epitome of a Spartan. Let's be honest though, we all just wanted more Buck lol.

I didn’t really mind Palmer either, but she did seem to get a little annoying at some points. At the same time tho I kind of like that point you made about the banter between Spartans like the IVs were always meant to conduct themselves so professionally and be this and that and yet IIs and IIIs like you said had their own banter and comments to things here and there, and that made me think about that short movie about the SIII headhunters and how Jonah and Roland were conversing throughout their mission, and even towards the elites near the end. Yeah IIs and IIIs are amazing, but it seems just a tiny bit off when the IVs are given what it seems to be like higher expectations as far as mannerisms and interactions go. Even tho some like the scenes shown of fire team majestic for example I feel like they could’ve really shown at least some more discipline. Even some respect becoming a spartan and starting out as a IV. Being humble at the fact that, even tho they may not be on the level of the IIs and IIIs, they are sharing the title alongside those spartan generations and are the building on the already significant reputation that previous Spartans built.

I mean tbh what did you expect? Spartan 2s were bread to be Spartans. They knew nothing other than being Spartans and were hand picked by Halsey for the program. Spartan 3s were also bread to be Spartans except they weren’t hand picked by Halsey, they were picked by ONI trying to create cheaper versions of the spartan 2s, that’s why they were made in such greater numbers and were sent on missions that they weren’t expected to come back from. Then you get to the spartan 4s, just regular humans that volunteered for the program after already having served in the military either for the fame of being a spartan or like Thorne because they’re actually trying to make a difference(hence why Halsey says he’s closer to being a true spartan) so you don’t get that same indoctrination that the 2s and 3s got.

But even a marine knows better than breaking ranks and being stupid behind enemy lines or in an active combat zone. Doing either will get them or their team killed.

@@Noface678 during the covenant glassing of New Alexandria Noble Six rescued Buck and his odst fireteam, that was accidentally left stranded without an aerial escort during the mass evacuation. The survivors which would canonically be the team featured in Halo 3 ODST, minus the rookie.

I want more of Spartan Thorne. He was the only IV I liked from Halo 4. He actually seemed mature. If all the IVs had similar attitudes as his, they would’ve been more fleshed out and enjoyable.

Having one be a wisecrack that takes their job seriously when in combat would make people like them more than what Fireteam Majestic was like. Thorne was what you'd expect to see, three fifth's of the team were what you didn't want to see.

That “nameless fire team” you actually can get some dialogue from them aboard the infinity that would indicate they are veterans from the human covenant war, some of them even fought side by side with chief. I assume this is why they are much more professional than Palmer or majestic
