I met D. Stevenson with his family in Dec. 2014 at Disney World in Florida. He was so cool, he took pics with our family and my mother who had terminal cancer and passed away within a year later. He sat and talked with my mom and she hugged on him as if he was part of the family. He may not know how much she/we appreciated the time he took away from his family to hang with us. Deshawn. I’ve went to 6-8 state champ in ca & several ca playoff games. Deshawn was the best I’ve seen along w Schea cotton. SG I think he growth was stunted meaning he didn’t meet expectations but I mean roy called him on DS wiki “the most talented recruit I’ve ever recruited”. The college debate is interesting. Back then, only outliers like Kobe and KG reached their peak potential. College would have been huge for a ton of guys, and I will even count guys like God Shamgod for coming out too early. The league wasn't equipped to develop these kids, especially the maturity aspect. Its different now, feels like the league learned some lessons. Its actually a young players league right now. But back then, damn look at Tyson Chamdler. He projected as a SF coming in. He is technically a bust, even though he became one of my favorite bigs of the era as a rim running shot blocker. But that's a far cry from a 7'1 SF with all around game.

6:05 That's an interesting WHAT IF about Deshawn Stevenson going to Kansas for a year or 2. Roy Williams comes across as an old-school coach(even back then in 2001), I'm not sure if he would have given D.Stevenson free reign and played him a bunch of minutes over upperclassmen guards Kenny Gregory, Kirk Hinrich and Jeff Boschee. R.Williams strikes me as someone who would have brought D. Stevenson off the bench but D.Stevenson's overwhelming talent(athleticism, shooting), his high school hype and playing for a highly ranked team probably would have made him a lottery pick after a year at Kansas regardless of his production. I think it would have been similar to Marvin Williams who was a highly rated player that went to North Carolina but came off the bench and still ended up going top 5 in the draft after his freshman year. I agree that playing in college would have really helped Deshawn Stevenson because he was too good to have his growth stunted by a college coach and the experience of competing/playing well against college guys would have given him more confidence heading into the NBA. He also would have been given way more opportunities to be great in the NBA if he was a lottery pick and went to a team that needed him to be great right away
@gpc8313 жыл бұрын
On D Steve’s wiki it used Roy’s quote from the state title game Roy saw at arco in sac right behind me before calling DS “the most talented recruit he has ever recruited”. That is no anomaly.. I’ve played w guys in the L & watched the best in CA for 20yrs.. state champ every year. DS was possibly the greatest HS player I have ever seen. Altho idk schea cotton (another stunted growth story done) is the other. Calling him that idk man we can play the hypothetical’s & you may just be right & Marvin Williams 6th man is a good call. Therefore, no I don’t think going to Kansas would have been in DS best interest.. it just sucked & I cried for DS when Utah drafted him. Utah drafted him & dee brown another HS legend that I saw @ aau.Nationals in 8th grade in my class. Utah killed Dee & I like how stunted growth found these quotes I’ve never heard from DS cuz I know he was depressed unconfident & wanted out from day 1 in Utah. U gotta give it to deshawn, for unlike dee, not letting Sloan the system in Utah kill his career.. think about this for a 2nd for the haters in this thread.. deshawn got the last laugh at Utah & these great vets & sloan. Imagine this… Malone.. Stockton Sloan… 0 nba titles deshawn 1. & deshawn being the flamboyant cocky dude he is when he has confidence playing in a normal system where he can utilize his all world god given athleticism to thrive & not be held back like he was in Utah.

I’m sure it’s pounding his chest & bragging about that simple fact & d-ing up lebron while reading this lol. Ppl r stupid & hating on dude cuz he is a knuckle but a talented knuckle that did enough to keep himself in the league & not get into too much trouble (Altho he had an underaged girl @ a fresno party legal incident also that jc left out in his rookie season) but I love deshawn.. he was one of my favorite players & idols growing up.. he just jumped out the gym & was that explosive athletic guard that would dunk on anyone no matter the size like earl manigult legend has it did.

@@gpc831 You bring up a lot of good points, it may be hard to respond to each!! LOL I saw in another comment on here(maybe from you) that Deshawn Stevenson's team beat Drew Gooden's team for the California state title in 1999 and Roy Williams was sitting courtside. I'm assuming D.Gooden helped recruit Stevenson to Kansas and played a role in him signing with Kansas. You mention D.Stevenson being the greatest California player you've watched in high school...what about guys like Tyson Chandler(did Stevenson ever play against Chandler/Dominguez?), Baron Davis and Brandon Jennings? I know all of them were considered by some to be the #1 top player in their class. About Stevenson going to Kansas, the 2000-2001 Kansas team he would have played on, had 3 future NBA lottery picks and they also went to back to back Final 4's in 2002 and 2003, I'm sure Roy Williams saw the potential in Gooden, Hinrich and Collison, and would have brought Stevenson along slowly(like he did Marvin Williams at UNC). Also, Kenny Gregory was a highly rated player who stayed for his SR year, Roy wasn't going to cut his minutes for ANYONE!! I'm guessing Stevenson would have come off the bench for Kansas and averaged double digits in about 20 minutes per game, that would have been good enough for him to still be a lottery pick in 2001. He probably would have come into the NBA with WAY more confidence and learned some life lessons while at Kansas, and most importantly he would not have ended up on a team full of veterans who probably wanted to destroy his confidence!! Another option for him would have been to sign with another school where he could have been THE STAR!! Anthony Edwards, Ben Simmons and Larry Hughes are the blue print for this. Those 3 were highly rated players who turned down the Kentucky's, Duke's, Kansas' and North Carolina's to attend a slightly lesser name schools, they dominated for a year, then became lottery picks. Maybe Stevenson should have went to USC or even Fresno State for a year, dominated and then gone top 5 in the 2001 draft. I remember Dee Brown(from Chicago) but I wasn't aware that the Jazz messed with his confidence too. I believe he stayed in school for all 4 years. It shows that the NBA can be more about politics than talent. These stunted growth videos show that all the time About LeBron vs. DeShawn Stevenson, when Stevenson stood up to him it was the BEGINNING OF THE END of the physical era of the NBA. Now, LeBron gets to the rim without anyone being allowed to touch him. I know D.Stevenson didn't like it in Utah, but he probably learned that ROUGH style of play from Karl Malone, John Stockton, Starks and Sloan!! That's how they played in the 90's!! LOL
