To anyone new to this video, you are supposed to coat the heater cartridge with dielectric grease. That would have made his life a lot easier.

Thermal grease is the right stuff but a lot of dielectric is thermal so that would work

Very helpful - thanks! So there's a plug of some sort in the hole? Also, I like putting my block heater cords in flame-retardant wire loom -- protects the cord from grease and wear and heat.

No plug, just a hole in the back of the block. Just make sure it’s clean before you install it. Flame retardant wire loom sounds like a good idea

Hey man, thinking about installing this in my '18 tacoma, how has it beld up since you installed it ? Any concern with it melting or losing the ability to heat the block ? I'm going to alaska and everyone down in the 48 looks at me weird when i ask about installing a block heater 😅

I haven’t had it in for too long and haven’t gotten a chance to test it in temps below zero yet, but from what I can tell so far it seems like it’ll hold up well. I will definitely update you if I find any issues or anything. Haha most people in the lower 48 don’t realize it’s an option for gas engines but in my opinion it’s a necessity for when temps are regularly well below zero!

So I looked up that part number on auto zones website and it’s saying this unit isn’t compatible with my ‘22 taco…any ideas?

I’m not sure I think the same thing happened for me but Napa or another store had the same part# fitting my truck so possibly an error?

Never mind. Took another stab at it and got it in. Just mushroomed the metal along the top. I would say that really small ball peen hammer helps a lot being there’s no room to bang it in.

Tried this, heater went in east until 1/4 inch. Wouldn’t budge. Had to hit it harder and harder. Couldn’t get it out. No room to get it in or out. Even if I got it in I ended up bending a prong it in. Not the most helpful video. I’m pretty upset

If it doesn’t fit you shouldn’t force it. 1/4” is a lot considering the taper on the heater itself. Not sure if you didn’t clean that hole out or if you have the right heater but definitely not worth messing up your block for something like this. As for the video, I installed the correct part for my vehicle and explained exactly how I installed it effectively, but if you’re working on your own vehicle it’s up to you to get and install your parts correctly.
