Installing a culvert with the John Deere 2025 tractor and backhoe attachment

After this was done and after reading several comments. I definitely would do things differently next time. I would have dug from the down stream side first. Then maybe I would have had some dry dirt to use for back fill and wouldn't have had to use gravel around the bottom of the culvert. The gravel at the bottom makes it more likely have seepage around the bottom of the culvert. Also, according to several people, I have dug the hole deeper so the pipe was 10% lower than the bottom of the ditch. I hope this helps to point out my mistakes, so that you don't make the same mistakes I did.

To all the experts it’s just a ten foot piece of pipe. If it should fail, an unlikely event with all the grass, it’s three hours and a few rocks. If you do something like this in the future start on the down hill side where it's dryer and dig 6 inches below your finish grade of the pipe. Backfill to your finish grade and using a hand tamp or plate tamp compact the bottom before placing the pipe. Finally when backfilling go 6 inches at a time compacting as you go. This will prevent the pipe from washing around it.

The culvert looks great, I think the concrete was a good idea. I don't think you will have a problem with the width, that corrugated storm drain pipe is very strong. Great video, Jimmy

Hey now you have to ask how to do your work. You could save a lot of money and time just get some of the knowledgeable people to come on weekends and show you how to do it .We all don’t know it everything and its easy to say this and that afterwords sometimes we just have what we know to go by I think you have one of the best channels .your doing just fine . Place large rocked on both ends of pipe. Keep erosion down and the mud from filling the pipe. SOLID JOB‼️👍👍. Vinny 🇺🇸

Pile large rocks at each end or the gravel will sift out all the time and gradually fill culvert at each end.

Place your culvert so the bottom is 10 percent below the level of the incoming water, so that the water actually falls into the pipe. Over time the bottom 10 percent of the pipe will fill with sediment and that will cement it in place, and keep it from washing underneath. That’s how it’s supposed to be.

that is the right way to do it, and no srtone or gavel,, to give a path for water, as it is used for dranage, all the work and cost he put into this, is all for nothing, but not to be mean but the truth is, i find he dont lesson to anything, he has to find out for him self, but like so many other you tubers we will never see that fail..

@@lylesmith1949 everyone do.. as they are long done. my point was, they will never show the total fail, but will defend what they did, as he do many times, but you can see in his later videos in the back ground were he did something that many told him it will not work, but he comes on and says it will be fine, but in the back ground later you see a small flash how it is failing already, but nothing is said. he needs to dig up the pipe and take all that stone out of there to the bare mud and redo it, the water will run though all that stone and wash out a huge hole, stone, sand and gravel is used for drainage, he mite as well left the pipe out and just filled it with that stone, and so many dont get it, because you see most people have said, oh great job, you have a good crossing now, or great job, well done.. lol

yes, you are right, the concrete will set up and form a dam that will call the seepage to have to rise higher before it can undercut. this added height will cause the flow to enter the pipe and problem is solved. your desire to clean the tractor tells me your parents raised you with high ethics which is one of the main reasons i follow yall on youtube. it is a pleasure with great reward following yall. have a good day and may all your endeavors be successful........g

Great job Evan. I have the next smaller size model of the same tractor (John Deere 1025R) and the backhoe has more-than paid for itself around our place. I am like you. I too also occasionally borrow a bigger tractor for other projects from a very good friend of mine. I always like to return it in better shape than when I borrowed it and I always top off the fuel. As far as the culvert that you put in, I thought that you did a very good job. It should suit your needs (I think) because I assume you aren't going to be driving your truck over it very frequently. Also, from the looks of the grade it doesn't look like you exactly have water "rushing through" it all the time. Just my opinion.

What I did might not have been the best choice. I may have to make adjustments later. But I never said this was the proper way to do it. It is just me sharing what I am doing. This is how I learn trail and error.

I would have thought that spreading the cement powder with some of the gravel at the inflow end would have been a better option to encourage the water into the pipe. Your way mat very well work better. Cheers.

I wondered about that, too. Looks like it would just make water dam up on either side of the culvert and back up. I'd have put it at the upper end.

I was thinking as long it it made a seal it would matter where it was along the pipe. And the incoming side had standing water and I didnt want the cement to get too wet before it cured.

Nice to have access to such nice (expensive) machinery! Our neighbor has a similar JD, and with attachments it costed him twice as much as our machine shed! Are you sure about the gravel? Never seen that.

On the home build I hired all the contractors and directed the work. I also did a great deal of the work myself. Getting estimates from contractors was very difficult. It was hard to even get a contractor to show up and look at the job. There is a lot of hidden costs like dumpsters, porta johns, staircase treads, railing, etc. It is best to have 15% extra to cover foreseen costs.

The upstream side had sitting water. I was afraid the cement would get too wet. I did install a culvert with cement ends before. I was trying to go simple on this one.

you never put stone or graval under or around a pipe, doing so makes a clear path for water to pass, under, and around, and washing it out around it taking all the dirt below out, so many make this huge mistake and dont under stand why, when they think they did everything right, after all stone or graval is used for drainage, same as sand in a gray water pit or septic field, it is for drainage, when installing a pipe you want good sealing dirt or clay then cap off with gravel, having that gravel in the bottom is going to give big problems, that cement is not going to do a thing, and it will not go though the stone or graval to the good sealing dirt. it will wash out.. the same thing will happen, leaving tree roots under or around a pipe, the roots give way for a path for water to eat away the dirt around the root/s until it finds its way though washing everything away, i have this fight with a contractor that stripped my land of all the brush and stumps and i had him make a pond, i told him to go into the vally and strip all the stumps, mud clean to the red clay and push clean clay into the vally to dam off the water and install a pipe 8 feet up, and back fill it with clean clay, with in 4 year the pand went dry and i could crawl under the pipe around all the roots he pushed in, when i told him, only clean clay, today my pond is gone and the pipe lays at the very bottom, leaving a huge hole were i can know longer drive to the other side of my land any more

Not sure I can follow your logic for a porous bed under the pipe that is just begging for water infiltration and thinking a leak seal midway along the pipe is beneficial when it's just a waste of effort. Culverts should be 10 to 20 percent of their diameter below the upslope stream bed to preclude water washing out the fill from the bottom up. Good luck sir.

Well, I didnt plan on using gravel for the whole thing. But I screwed up digging and all the dirt i dug out was mud. The trench was mud. So I decided to use gravel for everything. Maybe not a wise move. It might not work. I may pour concrete end caps at the ends of the culvert pipe to prevent water from flowing around it.

The corrugated pipe is definitely too high. It would have been much easier and more effective to just dig deeper, set the pipe lower in the dirt and backfill with dirt. Then put the rock on top. That being said, what you did should be hold up for a little while.

Iwish you would ask us our thoughts/experiences BEFORE you do a project like this. The pipe isnt deep enough. 10% should be below the bottom of the level where you want the water level to be. Just saying.
