Soon to be 75 years old, my old basement drain has faithfully done its job and has now developed a slight patina. Time for a well-deserved retirement. And because it should not be lonely in Valhalla, I send the old cast iron pipe as a companion and install new undergound drainage pipes instead (the orange ones).
I had initially suspected that stoneware pipes were installed. I had already encountered such in the exterior. Instead, the badly corroded cast iron pipe emerged, running through the exterior wall to the concrete sewer main line.

is this the way its done in European countries?... here in the states, we would attach the pipe fittings using glue cement.

Yes, in a lot of countries here. Although a guy in the comments mentioned that this system is also available in the US.

@@hans.talhoffer Thanks. I think you also got extremely lucky to have a wide existing pipe under the floor, and that helped you easily slide in the sleeve. Here in the U.S., it's usually 3 inches wide cast iron pipe in the old houses. You can't really slide in another pipe through it. And digging them up or relining them costs an arm and a leg. I was recently quoted US$30,000.00 to replace the sewer line under the basement floor.

@@khaleefax9553 You're welcome. And yes, I was lucky that it fit. Otherwise I would have just used the flexible connector at 2:45 in the video without adding / inserting a new pvc pipe. The cast iron pipe is still thick enough to last another 30 to 35 years in my estimation. 30.000 $ is a lot of money especially considering that most of it would be labor costs. New pipes are not so expensive after all. This amount would definitely motivate me to get my jackhammer and my shovel and start digging.

Can someone explain to me why he (at 3:05) inserted that orange pipe within the diameter of the the existing old pip? ..Based on my engineering logic wouldn’t it make sense to match the circumference of the existing pipe and connect end to end? Him inserting that smaller pipe inside of the old one created an obstruction (or lip) that impedes the flow from the house into the sewer.

If watching the video doesn't explain it, there is nothing I can do to explain it any more than that. I mean there is nothing "he" can do...

Did you do a leak test before cementing it?
@hans.talhoffer
@hans.talhoffer Жыл бұрын
Leak testing these pipes is done using special equipment and air pressure. If I was to test the segment I replaced in the video I would have to dig up the other side of the house, break up the concrete pipe, seal the pvc pipe at that end, seal the two sections inside the house, pressurize the pipes and see if there is any loss in air pressure after a certain amount of time. So you tell me if I did a leak test before cementing... 🙂

@@hans.talhoffer you also could just try running water through it with a hose as a much simpler test. Doesn’t need to be overly complicated bro.
@hans.talhoffer
@hans.talhoffer Жыл бұрын
@@jjwe2002 These pipes are inserted one into the other and are sloped so the water drains even without the gasket without any issue or leakage. In fact I used the drain this way during the installation process. Kitchen sink, dishwasher and washing machine were connected all the time when I was not working. The gaskets are there if pipe blockages occur and prevent leakage in case of backwater and flooding of the pipes. The gasket is 360° and if you want to do a leak test you have to do it the way I described. Sometimes the gasket can get pushed inside the pipe during the fitting process. This can happen anywhere around the pipe not only at the bottom.
