Wow!!! You just saved our hides. We have had a Ubiquiti system for a few years now, but wanted to solve a few problems in our new custom home build. We have all the Cat-6 wires already throughout the house, but still struggled with internet reliability. This helps us decide which way to go. We'll be upgrading to the UDM Pro line. Dang...so glad I came across you on KZbin. Thank you!

Super handy overview of the ubiquiti product line and presentation of your network upgrade journey. It’s so easy to go overkill on this stuff and end up down a rat hole. Additional advice I’d give someone upgrading their home network is to really get an understanding of the actual problem they’re trying to solve and the capabilities of the industry, then plan out the solution with anticipation of a little growth. Sounds like a lot of effort but I’ve found that really pays off in the end. When we renovated the house -18 years ago the cat 6 standard hadn’t been fully deployed yet so now I’m stuck with cat 5e in the walls. Kinda important to know this if I wanted to upgrade to sfp+ today and work out of the home with a bunch of teenagers, all competing for bandwidth.

Scott I transitioned my career about 6 years ago after being injured, I rapidly swapped to IT then moved on to learn cybersec/infosec and computer science. Your more low level overview videos help to connect gaps of knowledge if forget and didn't quite grasp along the way. I understand the foundations but sometimes when I go to create a diagram or engineer a project of all the things I draw blanks. Your talks help someone revisit there foundational knowledge and look at it from your descriptive and understandable perspective. Every time I watch the LED turns green, GG.

Thank you sir Scott for doing this. Been a fan for a long time (podcast, twitter, blog, now here) and you are one great inspiration to me. You have a fantastic way of delivering your message, no matter what the topic or circumstance you face - so thank you for that! I wish you a speedy recovery my friend. I had bought the UDM Pro back in May of this year after hearing you and Richard Campbell talking about Ubiquity in an earlier podcast and it grew to planning out hard wiring the house. It's been quite a project and a bit overwhelming at times (busy family with 4 & 8 yr old) so it was nice to see the setup and listen to how you tackled it all. I was missing the fiber connection between the UDM Pro and the switch and also plug extenders :). It's the little things. Thank you again for your strength and good vibes!

First job for UDMPro- go to users on the main screen where you pick network/protect/etc and create a local user The UDMPro is a fairly unreliable device in my experience, and if it goes wonky you'll need a local account, and a backup, keep the NAS & any pc u wanna restore backup from plugged directly into the UDMPro, as once factory reset you wont be able to access anything plugged into a switch. This is my experience after about 4 factory resets using this device.

Great video Scott, for those who don't understand networking this is a good watch for them... when I try to explain stuff like this to someone not in IT I usually get the deer in the head lights look partly because I have a hard time not calling items by their proper name, like when you call an Access Point a Hot Spot makes me cringe but the reality that's what most people think an Access Point is. Then one thing I disagree with you on is when you said you think the Cloud Key and the USG should have been the same device, basically what the UDM is now. The reason why I disagree with that is because that would force people to buy the Unifi gateway product regardless if they were going to use it or not. Having the controller as a separate device gives people the option to choose which gateway product they want to use. Over all Unifi makes great networking products but their gateway products lack some features that many business need so frequently you see other gateways products used in Unifi networks, which is why it is import to have these devices separated in a lot of networks. Don't get me wrong I think the UDM and UDM-Pro are great options to have but if Unifi gets rid of the Cloud Key and Controller software you are going to see a lot of very upset customers. I just setup a very similar network for a bar near my house using the UDM-Pro. They had problems with their internet going down during peak hours which prevented them from taking orders and processing credit cards... and now they have 2 different services coming into the UDM-Pro setup in failover like you do. One thing to take note is when Unifi gets the load balancing to work on the UDM-Pro this is most likely only going to work well if both of your internet providers have similar bandwidth... because load balancing is usually just a round robbin setup and does not actually try to truly "balance" the load across the two links. Also a single download stream would not be able to use the aggregate of both links and you would not be able to control which link is going to be used for the download. For example if you have 1Gbs fiber service and a 200Mbs DSL service I would definitely leave it in failover mode with the fiber as the primary link. What would be ideal is if the UDM-Pro will allow you to set which link is primary for each VLAN individually... so for example your IOT VLAN uses the DSL link as it's primary and all other VLANs use the fiber link. This way you would be able to balance the load across VLANs how you see fit.

Informative video thank you. Happy to hear about the upcoming link aggregation which is my reason fir going this way as well. Two things I struggle with in your working example Scott... 1. The dream machine is all-in-one... so IF one component in that unit goes out... How does it go then? What's the plan? 2 . I am no expert on network cabinets but mounting the thing right up near a ceiling? That's the hottest part of the room. Nor sure how much heat is given out from the components and sure, in this setup all will be OK no doubt. Then, as you mentioned when new rack mounted components are added, I wonder if the adjacent or internal cabinet temperature/s need to be monitored. Just the thing for an IoT temperature sensor for monitoring and controlling those fans. Comments any one?

Great video Scott! Loved seeing what you did with your network. It was timely as I'm also upgrading to the UDM Pro for my new home. I will have CenturyLink fiber (1 Gbps Up/Down) for the first WAN and backup the second WAN over use LTE. I don't know if it can be done, but I'd like to get rid of additional networking equipment from the network provider. The fiber connects to the house using an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). I'll connect the ONT directly to the UDM Pro via its RJ45. To obtain the public IP address & authenticate to CenturyLink, I was planning to use PPTP. This will allow me to avoid double NAT and using their router in bridge mode.

In my area of the country, east coast, Fios is fully symmetrical up to 1Gb, whereas Comcast is asymmetric with only 20-50Mb uploads. Is it different on the west coast? Because I would think you want the better upload speeds that Fios provides as in my area.
