I envy how much network is run throughout your house! I have an older house so it's only coax and my options are very limited for running ethernet. Just last week I ran an ethernet cable from my office on the second floor all the way down to the basement through my air ducting using a hotwheels remote control cybertruck and some fishing line haha. Once the rc car made it all the way down I used the fishing line to pull the cable back up through.

haha that's awesome. I've ran a lot of ethernet after the fact and yeah it's definitely not easy.

Nice! I probably would of ran that cable along the top of the garage wall that way if something accidentally falls onto that floor/wall corner, the cable wouldn't be compromised. The Unifi Switch Flex would be a good additional, that way you can keep your vlans and such if you need to expand with different networks.

Yeah totally agree about the cable, I was too lazy to run it along the ceiling though ha. And yeah that Unifi Switch Flex looks great... I think I'll use one of those next time I need to do this.

Thank you for this great video; it is very clear and easy to understand. A question..... Do we need a VLAN and firewall specific for them? What if someone unplugs the camera from outside and gets into the network? Thank you

I'd say it's a good idea to put cameras like this on a VLAN which can't talk to your other VLANs, because as you say anyone can just unplug one and get on the network.

I have a similar installation. Dream Machine. NVR Pro and a mix of G3s and G4s. I might suggest a nice little PoE switch they sell called a Flex. You can manage it and power more devices. I don't have the latest doorbell, but I understand it has two cameras ! I still have an 8+ year old 10/00 Tough Switch baking in the attic for the driveway, front door and attic cams.

So found your channel basically now (3 months after you posted this video) -- That multi port POE switch you mounted to the wall - Might be better if you mounted it so the ports are facing the ground - then maybe put some "empty" plugs in to prevent dust build up in the plug holes.. Being that its a garage, and your probably going to be using various tools and whatnot - it might even be better to mount that inside a "box" that can protect it from dirt/etc.. when making messes in garage. o/

that's a good call, not sure why I didn't mount it that way to begin with. easy fix to turn it upside down next time I'm messing around in there.

Hello! I would check the Unifi Switch Flex for future projects.

BTW i love your videos.

Thanks! Yeah the Switch Flex looks like a good option... I bought this PoE splitter a long time ago and finally got around to using it. I think I'll get a Flex next time I need to do something like this.

Ah man you removed all the nutrients from the G4 lol. All seriousness, great vid. Any upgrades to the AI Bullet/Pro or G5 range. I’ll check out your channel. This Xmas I install my UNVR and hopefully a camera or 2

ha thanks! I haven't upgraded beyond the g4 bullets, I actually have another one I need to decide what to do with. good luck with your install!

Came to see the mounting of the camera and you skipped that part. 😕

I can relate to the birds living on the cameras......

BTW, you have 3 disks in your UNVR. Did you manage to use one of them as a hot spare ? Activating this option wants to reformat the RAID which is nonsense, and it has been driving me nuts for months !
@clabretro Жыл бұрын
I haven't tried the hot spare and it's just on Basic Protection. But I just went to look and it's complaining that two of the three drives have bad sectors so it sounds like I'm about to deal with some pain as well 😭
