Installing a Williams Foolproof Receiver Sight on My Marlin 39a

A not-so-quick demonstration of how to install a Williams peep sight onto a Marlin lever action rifle. We'll also instal a Marble's 3/8" filler block into the empty dovetail slot in the barrel after removing the factory rear sight.

I chose a skinner peep sight for mine. I like how sleek it looks and fits. No snags to worry about while in the field.

Very nice video. My 1947 39A came with the top tang drilled and tapped for a tang peep sight. I installed a Marbles tang peep sight which fit perfectly. Less bulky than the Williams. The only down side is you can't easily place your thumb over the tang when shooting. I have learned to lay my thumb along the wrist of the stock.

😊I like the Marble sight also. I have them on a Marlin 39A, Marlin 94, and a Rossi 92. I don't think this aluminum Williams would wear well, but I haven't used one to be honest!

That seemed crazy complicated. I have a Marlin Mountie that I added a Skinner peep sight to. Maybe took 5 minutes. Easy windage and elevation adjustments. Made in USA. Very clean look on the little 22. Not bulky at all. Didn’t have to remove the rear sight except for the elevation slide. Very accurate and inexpensive.

I once managed to strip a Williams sight 5D, be careful not to use too much torque on these aluminum sights.

The various locking screws requiring loosening to adjust the sight is very counterproductive when the target knobs are meant for a quick adjustment on the fly. Would it at least be possible to replace the small locking screws with nylon set screws so the sight remains tight but no loosening is required?

That makes sense to me. If nylon screws of the correct size could be found, I think that would be a great solution.

There’s no need to completely remove the gib lock and the elevation locking screws. You only need to loosen them.

May regret the Red Loctite if you ever want to remove the sight. Red takes heat to remove, blue does not.

What installation screw goes into which hole? One installation screw is much longer than the other.

I’m not entirely sure anymore. If you bought the sight new in package, one installation screw should have been captive, under the elevation slide. That is, I think, the rearward screw. I’ll take a look at mine and see if I can figure it out.

Okay. After taking a second look, I think the longer screw goes into the forward hole on the left side of the receiver. This is because the aluminum base is significantly thicker there.

I totally agree. My first choice would have been a vernier tang sight but the tang on this rifle is not drilled and tapped. I thought about doing it but then, when I saw what these rifle are selling for nowadays, thought better of it.
