I searched on KZbin to find out how to put a zipper in my knitting, before I did the button bands (or zipper plackets). After watching this I planned my plackets to have a ditch to make it easier to put in the zipper. Thank you so much

Hello! I also want to add a zipper instead of buttons to my first steeked Icelandic sweater. Any tips or instructions on how to finish the edges after steeking?
@GrandmaY
@GrandmaY 2 жыл бұрын
@@eunique4819 Hi Eunique - When I knitted this sweater, I made a few purl stitches where the steek would be. I machine stitched in that area on both sides to stabilize (before cutting). Then, after cutting, I carefully lined up the zipper close to the teeth so that the right sides (knitted steek & zipper) were together. Then basted like crazy to make sure that the design motifs were properly aligned. After machine stitching in place, I folded the front of the sweater so that the raw edges of the stitches were covered, and hand stitched the edge of the zipper to the inside of the sweater as invisibly as I could. I hope that helps.

I just finished an Aran pillow with a zipper vs. a button closure. I have to take out the zipper I put in as it rumpled. I added a chain of crocheting with crochet cotton and a No. 9 steel hook. Then sewed it in by hand with yarn. I will go get some double-sided tape tomorrow as that just looks great. Sometimes I’ve had success with this method on purses where I used Tunisian knit stitch as that does not stretch like actual knitting and that looks good. I think I got the crochet cotton too tight also. So glad, I looked for a video you did because, you’re the best. Glad to see others think so too.

If you have very fuzzy yarn I have found it helpful to put either a light tearaway stabilizer or a wash-a-way one. It helps keep all those little fibers from catching on the sewing machine. I have even used some thin tissue paper, this is not as see through but does ok if the yarn is darker.

Hi, first thank you so much for your videos, you are such a great teacher! I am making a sweater called Cowichan Sweater Knitting Pattern Childs Owl Sweater. I have never put a zipper in a hand knitted garment. I love the professional results of your techniques. I really like your machine method but pattern I am using does not add a selvedge other than the results of knitting one row and purling the next. When I look at yours, it looks like you have picked up along selvedge edge with rows of garter and stockinette to achieve the desired ditch. Also I am wondering if when you knit the fronts did you use some type of slip stitch edge to make picking stitches up easier. Unfortunately I have already knit the back of the sweater and if I add several rows of selvedge am I right in thinking that the front will obviously be wider than the back and that perhaps it is now too late to use your 'machine stitch in the ditch method'...I saw Roxanne Richardson's video 'Picking up stitches for a double zipper facing" ... I am assuming that after I pick up stitches back and front that I could bind off immediately. I have also read about doing an icord facing. I am just starting on the fronts. Next sweater with a zipper I will study the pattern more carefully and I will plan better so I can avoid these issues. What advice would you give me now that I am in the middle of it.😬🙄 Melissa

@SuzanneBryan 4 ай бұрын
Sounds like you have learned a good lesson. As i often tell my students, the finishing starts before the knitting. In other words, you need to know what your finishing will be, so you knit to the plan, rather than having the finishing being an after thought. What I would do, is make some swatches and try the different styles and see which you like best. As for edges where you are going to be picking up stitches, unless it is a sock gusset, I do not slip the selvedge stitches. If you want to add a zipper by machine knitting, I would go ahead and pick up stitches along your fronts and then immediately bind off. This will give you enough space to stitch in the ditch to add the zipper by machine. Of course you will need to figure out how many stitches you need to pick up per inch, rather than just picking up for every row. You can figure this out, after blocking your garment, get an accurate measurement of your stitch gauge and row gauge. Then create a ratio between them. I have a great video on picking stitches for a button band that walks you through that process. Just look for how to work a perfect button band by Suzanne Bryan. Good luck with our project.

Great. Was the welt K2 P2 a picked up and added button band? Or are these added in at the beginning of the row? Does this edging have a specific name? What about adding a zipper to a steeked knit front? How would you stabilize and sew in a zipper? Any suggestions? Thanks so much.
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 2 жыл бұрын
Both of the edges for this demonstration were picked up and knitted on. I would do the same for a steeked edge. I would pick up along the steek and add an edge of some type for the zipper. For stabilizing, I use the dissolvable double sided sticky interfacing. I think I show that in the video.

Thank you!!!! I’ve learned so many techniques through your tutorials. Question- how hard would it be to add the zipper sewing machine way into the ribbing (the 2x2)?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 5 жыл бұрын
You can do it, but it really depends on the weight of yarn you are using. The machine knitting compresses the stitches that it goes over, so will leave a line on Knit stitches, whereas the purls fall to the back anyway and do not show compression. Of course you could add an i-cord edging or a couple rows of Rev St st before you bind off to give an area for sewing that would be less visible.

Here is the tape - www.amazon.com/Outus-Quilting-Tape-Wash-Away/dp/B071R3HWFH?SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&tag=duckduckgo-osx-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B071R3HWFH And yes, I uses 2.5mm length stitches, but it depends on the weight of your yarn. If you are using a finer yarn, smaller stitches, heavier yarn, longer stitches.

THANK YOU! I feel I can do this now. So your little border is 2 purl rows, 1 knit row and a final 2 purl rows? Did you make a knit row before the purls too? That would be a little short of the 1.5 in I need. What other stitch combinations would work with the sewing machine method?

Pick up stitches, work 1 row in reverse St st, 2 rows in St st, 2 rows in rev St st, then bo purlwise.

You can add more rows, but I would keep the last 3 the same. Garter stitch would also work.

Thanks Suzanne for another excellent video. What stitch did you use on the machine? My Bernina has a stitch for stretchy fabrics and I wonder if one can use that.

I used 2.5 straight stitch. The zipper does not stretch, so you can't really use a stretchy stitch. Happy Zippering.

So, do you not remove the double sided tape?
@SuzanneBryan

Nope, it is very sheer and will dissolve in water.

Did you take out the double sticky tape? Did you leave it?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 5 жыл бұрын
The double sticky tape, what is left after you remove the paper, is a very thin coat of adhesive that is water soluble. It is so thin that it is almost non existent.

I went to Amazon to buy some of the double sided tape you used for installing the zipper and ran into some negative reviews. Can you recommend a particular tape? I would hate to gunk up the beautiful sweater I knit!! 🙂
