INSTALLING an ACCELERO on a GTX 1080 Ti!? How to & Temps vs 1080 Strix

After letting off some Easter Eggs in the last couple of videos, people inquired about the custom GTX 1080ti that I had on display, so here it is. I have fitted a Arctic acclero onto the card and the results are quite simply amazing, even with the extra power draw the 1080ti produces over both the 1080 and 980ti.
I used the thermal grizzly thermal paste, which is a dangerous move (and I don't recommend doing any of this to your 1080ti card btw, as it WILL void warranty), but the results speak for the themselves - phenomal temps and also low noise. This was a really cool experiment that ended up working out really well.

Little remark: You won't lose your warranty if you go with MSI or EVGA (just look it up). You can remove the FE air cooling and install whatever cooling you want. Some suppliers will reduce the warranty to 2 or 3 years, some will remove it categorically but some won't care.

wtf generally you would want to use clu on gpu die like this i.imgur.com/x0CSdiK.jpg so you won't accidentally spread any on the transistors. The way you did it gives absolutely no wiggle room error in case you slip a little while mounting the cooler Edit: yes its off topic but thats because I need to steal the pinned comment for exposure so people won't kill their gpus with clu
@techyescity

Yeah I have had a 780 with conductive thermal paste plastered onto the micro SMDs on the side and it didn't kill the GPU, though still not a good thing. The tape is a good idea, but since the paste is pretty thin, it can still leak so finitely, and then it will still cause problems, so I like to just work with precision from the get go and get the amount just right.
@patckpw
@patckpw 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting, you booted and it didn't die? Pretty lucky, there was probably another one in parallel or something. Just had a guy kill his 7700k earlier this week in r/overclocking by accidentally spreading his clu onto some contacts next to the die. www.reddit.com/r/overclocking/comments/61ny6n/i77700k_delid_fail_who_wants_a_300_keyring/ Generally though you might want to cover up whatever is conductive with some nail polish or tape and just mount the cooler over it.

Damn, poor guy :(. Prob also another good reason for modders to get a power supply that doesn't have a huge start up spike voltage. Yeah I agree though you really only need a micro dot of the stuff to start with, I think the CLP application video is an excellent start to show people how much of the stuff you need if applying, so I will update the description with the video, though you can always use mx4, but on a 1080ti putting out so much heat I would rather go with the high performance pastes. Here is the CLP video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3fLk6Sfe81si9U

This test was awful though. Different cards, different thermal pastes, different coolers? Get a 1080TI Strix, and replace the thermal paste on that card also, and then run the tests. We don't know how much of the gains came from the cooler compared to the thermal paste.

That's not thermal paste you're using. The Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut is liquid metal, and it's very effective. You have to use the same thermal compounds if you want to compare different coolers, and the same coolers if you want to compare different thermal compounds. Mixing the two together is extremely unscientific and casts doubts on the results, because a large proportion of the lower temperatures can easily be attributed to using liquid metal over the stock Asus thermal paste.

I actually had a choice back in the summer when I was upgrading - get a reference 290X locally and add that extra 70eu for the Accelero cooler or order a Tri-X 290X online from Germany for the same total. I chose the latter, and even though the Tri-X coolers were absolutely amazing, your Accelero videos always bring me back to that point where I decided to not go down this road :p

Tech City, first off good video. I have three of the coolers you are using and you are right that they are very good. I noticed at around 02:10 you discuss concern for using the Grizzly TIM. There is a way that can help with protecting those areas of concern. Place two layers of 'clear' Liquid Electrical Tape, over those resistors/chips surrounding the die/GPU. Allow it to fully dry after each application. This helps give you added insurance that you won't short out your card after applying the TIM. I myself use CLU Pro on my new Titan Xp and previously no less than 7 other cards, I have never had a short happen using CLU because of the added protection. Oh that type of TIM also works well with water-cooling GPUs. Anyway again, good video. Cheers!

AC coolers are ridiculously good. manufacturers should just buy them in bulk from them, slap them on as default coolers and call it a day. I installed the smallest one, the Mono Plus, on an OCed RX 480 8GB and temperatures don't go over 70C now. For a RX480, that's insane.

They also have a phenomenal price to performance ratio on CPU coolers... I bought a freezer 7 rev 2.0 some years ago when I had my AMD phenom CPU, and I just couldn't make the CPU go higher than 60ºC, even when unlocked to an x4 (it was the x2 550) and OCed, and barely audible. and that cooler cost me almost half of what a 212 costs in Portugal... arctic cooling is probably the most hidden gem in cooling matters, but it's a very rare diamond.

Hey man, Great video! I was wondering a few things: I bought the Accelero you put in the description, does it come with enough thermal pads if any? Does it come with heat sinks and heat sink plaster? Does it come with the PWM Fan connector? What thermal paste do you recommend I use to mount this to my 1080Ti?. What comes with it and what comes seperate? I'm desperate for an answer from pretty much anybody that knows the answers to my questions. Fast as possible

Hey Tech! Love the vids you put out I appreciate your style and information given so thank you again! I was curious because I want to mount the arctic accelero iii xtreme on my evga gtx 1080 sc due to the cooler being noisier then I would like, but I was curious as to where I need to plaster on the little fin heatsinks? The vram of course and then the vrm, but where else do they need to be placed? I am just a little nervous due to the heat issues that card has had in the past with evga issuing thermal pad kits and all. Thank you again!

Hey John, you will need to cover the mosfets and also the vram, that usually does it. The Vram is usually around the GPU Die and the mosfets for the VRM are usually before the chokes. Just make sure nothing is touching those heatsinks other than the die to which its connected too.

Sebas scholtens electrical tape is a poor choice. The temps near the die will cause the tape to soften. The bad part of that is the tape adhesive will become very “gooey”. A much better choice is clear nail polish. Electrically non conductive, easy to apply, dries very fast and much neater.

I have them put on a 5850 and 570, and what a big drop on temps and also quieter. Next in line is 1070.

They should extend your warranty by a year, for putting on a proper cooler (compared to the founders edition). I put the dual fan version on a GTX 970 years ago, and it was amazing. Virtually silent, and my custom modded Bios 970 would run around 1600Mhz stable. It's now in my fathers PC, lowered to 1530Mhz I think, and running well. I lowered it slightly on his, because he doesn't monitor it, and I want it to be problem free. Even if it goes a few months without cleaning. Their coolers look dated and basic, but they are very impressive. Function before form I guess. I think I'm going to do this for my 1080ti. I went from the Strix O8G 1080 to a Gigabyte 1080ti, and the noise level is a lot higher. Enough to want to rip it apart.

Not sure if this has been covered but in introducing a different thermal compound, you cannot isolate whether the effect is due to the cooler vs the thermal compound itself. I.e., what happens if you use the same thermal compound on both the 1080 Ti Strix and the Artic cooler? Also are the PCB on the FE and the Strix the same? Lot of variables weren't controlled here :( Additionally,

Picking up one of these today to replace the blower fan on my Gigabyte 1080Ti, which is stupid loud under load, doesn't get great temps even then, and I've replaced the thermal paste on it a couple of times and it's still a huge disappointment. Thanks for the video!

You could have used thin masking tape to 'protect' the small resistors around the GPU die... that way if the liquid metal DOES squeeze out you're much less likely to short something out...

What are those black washer things (and other hardware used) you're using to secure the backplate to the rear IO? 4:12, far right. There is nothing like that in the kit. It would be really helpful if you could reply.

Just bought a PNY 1080ti for $140. Middle fan was bad. Decided to try a 250watt tdp rated Artic Twin Turbo II that I already had. Looks like 5c-10c improvement. Not bad for their mid range product on a high watt GPU.

The next time put some lacquer on the little condesers It will aboud short-circuit if LM moves from its position, remember that is LIQUID metal.

Just ordered my pc and didn't realize which graphics card I was getting. Got the MSI Armor OC 1080 ti which supposedly runs very hot. Will this cooler work on it? Also will I need to get a toolkit and is thermal paste optional or a must have?

Initially I was interested in the Arctic Air gpu coolers for the 1080ti, however having a mid-tower restricted it to only one of their air coolers, and it wasn't recommended for the 1080ti. Finally went w/ the Arctic Hybrid Accelero III - 120, and I share similar feelings as Tech City. OC set @ 150CC, 500MC, and 105% power yields similar Core Clock speeds @ 2012 maybe being the high, and generally hovering just under 2000Mhz. Memory Clock reached 6000Mhz, but wasn't monitoring memory clock outside first OC. It was HOT in my room today, played Rise of the Tomb Raider for 3+ hours, OC all the time, and stayed below 70C, hitting a max temp towards the end @ 68C. It's quiet, and performs much better than the reference cooler. I guess you felt compelled to recommend not taking off the reference cooler (*If not EVGA Reference) due to warranty, however it's not really an option if you bought a reference. The Reference 1080ti is a volcano followed immediately by a hurricane. It's unbearably loud, and anxiety producing to think your card might simply melt through your mobo if you don't watch the temps. This is valid option @ $100 for the Hybrid, and around 50$-60$ for the Air Cooling options. EVGA lost me when they listed $120, and then increased the cost by $40 due to demand. That is not typical EVGA customer treatment, and I hope they take a loss on the Titan / ti hybrid to learn a lesson. I'll still buy EVGA, but not that one.
