The reason it is booting more slowly is that it hasn't finished indexing. After a fresh install, you need to leave it on for about 30 - 40 mins to fully index. Then it should boot faster.

The reason for the little gain in boot time is due to the old SATA interface. You will see gains in random reads and writes tho.
@marc63408 жыл бұрын
The reason the SSD and the mechanical HDD had about the same boot time is simply because the internal data bus runs at the same speed. So even though you have two completely different drives, they are basically being bottlenecked by the machine itself. At least, that's what I assume is happening.

Concerning the 2012 and newer models, I'd definitely say that 21.5" iMacs are herendous to get the RAM out. The 27" don't require any special tools, just something to push the latch to unlock the cover, however that's the only thing that can be easily upgraded on the 27" iMac. For the HDD you need to take off adhesive and put it back on.

The SSD is not going to improve the Bootup time by much, because the Strength of SSDs which is Random Reads/Writes is not coming into play here. OSX actually aligns the Files needed to Boot the System on HDDs so that they can be read in (almost) one go sequentially without many random reads. So the HDD will reach its full read speed, which is close to the limit by the Sata cable, so the SSD can not be any faster.

Only the 21.5" 2012 and newer models made it harder to upgrade the RAM. On the 2012 and newer 27", you don't even have to unscrew any screws to open the access door on the back. That being said, everything else is harder to get to on those models.

Comment 400 YES! 11:40 So hopefully you learned from this people & user, did you ever try to load boot from the FireWire 400 ports on a comparison level to the Serial ATA (SATA) 1 connection that you installed the SSD to. By SATA (1), I mean this Serial ATA bandwidth allocation is of a max rating of 1.5gbs as opposed to the SanDisk SSD you are utilizing that can go up to SATA 3 standards of 6gb/s (meaning even though generally backwards compatible the SSD will be capped to the SATA 1 standard max rate). From this alone, I would assume that the FireWire rate allows for faster transfer of data than the SATA port in the iMac G5 this SSD is being installed in. I would be curious of these results if not being perceived to be out of line. Peace!

I have a late 2012 mac mini that has a stock 5200 rpm Hard disk drive in it of which is very slow for opening apps. I use an external USB 3.0 to SSD as my boot disk and the external SSD blows away the internal SATA 5200 rpm hard disk drive as for comparing opening apps. But I think the boot time of the internal SATA hard disk drive and the external USB 3.0 SSD are the same.

I don't really buy the "We had to get rid of expand-ability in order to make it thinner" argument that Apple makes nowadays when they used to have such elegant ways of opening up their computers. I don't see why a mechanism like the iMac G5's wouldn't work on today's iMacs.

I don't know exactly which models it affects, but I believe it's most models; the fans will run at full speed if a) it takes more than 30 seconds for the computer to load the OS (which is the case when safe booting) b) when you load any pre-OS utilities such as the option-boot that Druaga1 used to boot from the external drive. Also, you can't install Panther on a Mac delivered with OS X Tiger (or newer) without doing some bypassing stuff.

Considering you have an SSD on it then try getting copy of Lubuntu running on it since Lubuntu is light weight that should prove the SSD's speed
@DanceDanceNorth7 жыл бұрын
Ubuntu should work just fine on a G5. I would only consider Lubuntu on a G3 or G4, and even then, a G4 slower than 1 GHz or the RAM inferior to 1 GB. In any case, I would still keep Tiger (G3) or Leopard (G4/G5) and run Ubuntu as a secondary OS.

Hi, cool video ! But you should try with a installation of 10.5.8, which is the latest OSX available for ppc Macs. Also, if you search, there's an image with ppc-only binaries. 10.5 afaik, has "dual binaries", with x86 and ppc. So this guy removed the x86 part of the binaries, and the system becomes much lighter. Try that too.
