Curious, if the adding of shims of the inner burr was done after getting a perfect wipe on the outer burr, don’t we have to calibrate the outer burr again since the position of the inner burr shifted a bit due to adding of shims?
@mikni4069
@mikni4069 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I did originally something similar I got 16 shims min. But then thought that’s ridiculous, so I tried rotating the burr on the carrier and found where it had the best alignment and then shimmed from there. Meant I had to use far less shims. Mine had the same issue getting out, but after always placing it on the back and make sure it’s nicely centred it pops right out, also I think the Unimodal is contributing to the problem.

@bradsyoutube 6 ай бұрын
Great video. Wouldn’t you want to use a permanent marker to note where the burrs are placed on the carrier? Or are you just making sure you put the burrs back in the same spot after shimming each time? I say this because it could either be the burr or the carrier causing misalignment and if you shim and happened to put the burr back in a different way, the alignment would be off.

Any updates on how you liked the SSP Cast burrs yet, vs the MP? I much prefer the MP burrs, but apparently the SSPs do get better with a lot of seasoning like 30+lbs according to some. The MPs may also benefit from that, but were good and high clarity out of the box, where I'm just getting a lot of body and not much clarity out of my SSP Cast burrs, however, maybe having a good alignment is more important for those burrs than it is for the SSP MP.

Think it’s just 10 lbs to season. I suspect those who say it’s 30 lbs are just dialing themselves in how to use them. I know with me I saw the light on how good the MPs are 2 years after having mine ! I started going finer and made incredible pour over with them

Quick question, for the dial adjuster metal piece. The four screws that hold this in, should they be tightened all the way? My machine locks when I tighten them fully. I'm actually trying to install the SSP MP burrs.

Genuine ask, if you put 13 layers evenly under each screw, couldn’t you have just not added any shims? Or is it something about the unevenness of the ode/cast combinations that means you have to add shims for more stability?

What is the reason for shimming the stationary burr after aligning the rotating burr and getting a perfect wipe?
@andrejbelanov354
@andrejbelanov354 7 ай бұрын
The perfect wipe is only from the highest point in the stationary burr touching the surface of the rotating burr. He is then attempting to level the stationary burr afterwards by shimming it to avoid any unevenness from the cast part which may mean the burr doesn't sit perfectly flat when screwed down

@jkim makes when you checked for the touch with the marker did you not screw the rotary burr carrier in? Just wondering what you did there since I feel like the video skips over this but could make alignment easier/faster and potentially scarier. I just got the Ode and installed SSp Unimodel Burrs with this method and found the thing that took the longest was the constant screwing in and out the rotary burr parts.

Do you think it would be a bad idea to sand down the inner cast portion of the burr so that it doesn’t touch?
@jkimmakes
@jkimmakes 2 жыл бұрын
I think it would be easier to sand the burr carrier. The burrs are hardened and will be difficult to remove material from. The moving burr carrier is available as a part from fellow, but you will have to be more careful if you mess with the fixed burr carrier.
@HappyAccidentVideos
@HappyAccidentVideos 2 жыл бұрын
@@jkimmakes I asked my brother, who has a small machine shop, if he could do it and he said he could. So the removal of material isn’t an issue. As for altering the Ode burr carriers, I could always purchase a replacement auger from Fellow, but I’d rather not remove material from the inner burr carrier. I’ll probably just end up shimming like you did, I was just wondering if it would be worth a try to file the burrs down
@Rescla
@Rescla 2 жыл бұрын
@@HappyAccidentVideos With a relatively new ode I just had some machine marks protruding on the burr carrier which I filed down. But otherwise I'd just shim it, especially on the rotary part. I think you'd imbalance the rotor by filing away parts of it. Machining it might work, but I'd think shimming is easier, and reversible.

@HappyAccidentVideos
@HappyAccidentVideos 2 жыл бұрын
@@jackchen6578 It’s the burrs that have the issue, not the Ode. If you get an Ode, though, make sure to get one that wasn’t produced in Q3 or Q4 of 2022. Some of those models have slightly smaller burr carriers for some reason, and won’t fit SSP burrs. I’m sure you could message Fellow and request this.

@@OddJob728 I have a kruve sifter. The original burrs produced less grinds below 400 microns than the ssp mp burrs did, at least, in my tests. I didn't have any problems with fines clogging with the original burrs. So, maybe the original might be better for you?
@OddJob728
@OddJob728 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidlogan2682 i recently started using the Fellow Shimmy to sift out below 200 microns. Testing both, SSP produced far fewer fines below 200. More importantly, the rest of the grind was far more consistent. For technique, I reduced the amount of agitation. In combination with sifting, this is the best I've been able to produce. Ordered a P64 and am looking forward to comparing.

@@OddJob728 I can't afford the lagom, right now, but I did mange to find a good deal on the Df64. It is being shipped... I'm sure it will need some add ons, etc., but it should, in theory, be not as good as the lagom, but close. I use a melodrip, if I need to be wary of too much agitation. Works fairly well.

There's three variables - both burr surfaces and the rotation axis. You aren't aligning the burrs to each other, you're aligning both to be perpendicular to the axis of rotation.

@@cha1ny104 How are you liking the MP burrs? For quality light roasts as espresso, they're my favorite. TONS of clarity / flavour separation, however, not too much body, definitely not a great choice for darker roasts (which are gross usually so you don't want clarity, but my taste bias may be affecting that). I find The Cast burrs are great if you want more body and more traditional basically what people think of as conical-like coffee quality, however my thinking is, you may as well get a Lagom Mini, Niche Zero, or another quality conical burr grinder for a similar taste profile (I find most Eureka grinders also fit in that category). I haven't tried much but I believe the cast burrs are great for coarser brew methods though, but so is the MP, especially with lighter roasts.

@@BensCoffeeRants hey! I'm liking my MP burrs a lot, definitely my favourite burr but I really only drink light roast. Did get fomo and bought some second hand cast burrs and they make good espresso if you want something blended or if it's going into a milk drink anyway but wouldn't use the cast for filter or a coffee where I wanted high clarity. Have heard lots of people rate the cast v1 (but people have to grind close to chirp and have a limited range for espresso) whereas mine are V2 and behave pretty normally.

@@armLocalhost I didn't do any alignment initially - I think I'm taking away that it's more of an issue when you're shimmed - when you'd have high and low spots in the carrier. Makes sense and makes me less freaked out. Though I should still do an alignment to make it consistent 👍

First batch of SSP cast burrs had issues mounting properly on a few grinders like DF64 and ODE, but fit fine on the P64 I believe which is what they likely tested it on. They ended up sending replacement burrs to people who had issues, so some people got two burr sets for the price of one!
