Another great tutorial Ron. Backdrops, fascia, and valences really help to make a layout look more finished and professional and they really highlight the layout. Looks fantastic. You might want to cut in those holes before spackling because the vibration from the cutting tool may loosen or crack your great work. Anyone else doing this please use a shop vac with a hepa filter when sanding, Ron was recording it for us.

Ron - A very timely and well done video. I am in the process of hanging backdrop as well and you had a few techniques/tips I had not considered, such as the drywall mud sander and using tape. Very well done and glad to know this info ahead of time!

You probably already know or others may have said but they do make adjustable counter sink drill bits, saves time and (as least for me) they work great. Nice job and another great video that shows the importance of taking your time paying attention to detail.

Wet sanding or even using a wet sponge will keep the dust down when finishing drywall compound.

thx for your videos on model R/R. for awhile i lost interest in your programs mainly because i saw no hope of ever getting involved in the hobby. i live in a one bedroom apartment in public housing and have no place to try the skills i learn from you. for the four or so years i have been watching you i have not found a club to belong to except 120 miles away in the Chicago suburbs. membership in any of these clubs is more than i can afford. now i have recently found a club to belong to that is about 20 country miles away. if i get involved in that club i will be watching much more of you. my main interest is in woodcarving. i am more interested in building a layout and doing scenery than i am in the technical aspects like wiring engines etc. i still slog through those episodes because if i ever get involved i will need to know these things. then it will be very interesting to me. perhaps someday i can start a model R/R club in town and gear it to interest kids. the hobby might cultivate a lot of useful skills for life in the future. i wish i would have had this same opportunity when i was a kid. this is still a great way for old geezers to mentor young-uns.

How do you your fascia? Do you elevate it slightly about the edge? Or flush and take the scenery to the edge?

Develop a track plan, books are available on the topic as well as looking all over KZbin for inspiration. Welcome back.

I will repeat the other response. Start looking for a tracknplan that you can adapt to your space and that looks fun and interesting to operate.

Hi Ron, I've just stumbled across your videos and have subscribed. I find them extremely useful and thorough. I'm just a 67 year old beginner building my first layout. I am in the process of building the sub-structure for the base at the moment. One thing that has been puzzling me is the sequence that one should follow in working through this project. For example: 1. plan the track layout and chalk it out on the floor 2. build the base substructure 3. lay the track 4. do the wiring 5. back drop 6. scenery etc Do you have a video that covers all the planning phase? Many thanks and keep up the great work Paul Australia

Very nicely done Ron. Since I am using a photo backdrop vs. painting, would it be necessary to cover up screw holes and joints with that compound? - Jason

I don't know if my comment got to you but MIRRcom says I need to send you this. I took a Rechargeable Toothbrush with 2 heads and pulled the bristles out and took 2 sided tape and put it on sandpaper and shaped it to what I needed, whether oval or triangle shape to get into tight places. My fingers were getting wore out so I decided there had to be a better way. Good luck.

Yes, thanks. That is an interesting idea. I will have to give it a try.

Depending on the artist, I have seen some awesome looking backdrops that were painted. Photo does look better to the naked eye but a still photo zoom in does have a different effect if painted a certain way.

I paint sky and clouds, then use photo backgrounds for trees and other background objects. Many commercial photo skies look photoshopped and unrealistic, and lack the haze that is natural near the horizon even on a clear day.

Hello, “masonite” was invented by W.H.Mason in 1924 who added the Latin suffix “ite” to his surname; therefore it should be read and pronounced exactly as it is spelled “meson-ite” (precisely from the Latin “ites”) and not “meson-ait” (with English pronunciation)

Ron, please go to VIMEO. At the start of this were three commercials and 2 15 sec commercials in the middle. If I wanted to watch commercials, I would watch broadcast TV or cable. When I signed up for KZbin, you couldn't have commercials, but Alphabet has made the almighty Dollar the most important thing to consider.
