Thanks for the informative video I am thinking about that output and how I am having second thoughts.

Thanks for watching! For what it’s worth, I’d still get it, but I’d definitely double check everything. It’s likely I got an oddball.

Great video dude, appreciated the info on Sierra Nevada, ill be sharing that with my offroad buddies for sure! I've been tempted to pick up a few advanced adapters pieces as they do look beefy... good to know if I do, ill have to do a bunch of extra work. totally some of my favorite things to do when buying expensive parts is to have to rebuild them, finish cleaning up the machining, and of course hunt down or make hardware they forgot/ do not include 🤣 In all seriousness, those things should just not happen, especially if they claim it to be made here in the USA!

I agree man. There's no way that unit should've been in such bad shape.

Cool video, surprised that it broke on that flat. I bet it failed (cracked or yielded) long ago and finally sheered in that instance. Just curious about the cv joint (double u joint) on that already long flange. “Back in the day” when they cared about energy conservation for clocks, they used a 2 prong fork to drive a T. The result was a device that could only drive torque (no side or axial load possible). The fallout was a (single) u joint. So… I get the idea of the cv with the double joint but I’m thinking it jacks up the no-side load part of the equation and thus the failure. I was thinking about upgrading to a Tom woods with a double, but I might just live with the tiny rumble at 75 and not risk it.

Thanks! You might be right that the assembly was already weakened to begin with. It has been wheeled pretty hard. As for the double cardan or CV u joint setup, I don’t think side loading is a large factor, though it undoubtedly does exist. The most important factor is maintaining constant rotational velocity - CV. When a u joint operates at an angle, the drivetrain output shaft rotation would be at constant speed, but the driveshaft speed will be a sine wave that increases in amplitude as the angle becomes more extreme. Since the drive shaft is going slower and then faster relative to the other components that are trying to maintain constant velocity, it puts enormous strain on the components. But if you can counter the angled u joint with an equal and opposite u joint angle, the two cancel each other out, and the driveshaft connections to the rest of the powertrain are in constant velocity - where the double cardan joint gets the name CV. Only the tiny section in between the two u joints of the CV joint experiences this sine wave effect, but the mass is so little that it has negligible effect on the u joint life. This is why driveline angles are so important. It’s not so much binding, though that is very important, but it’s more about canceling out the sine wave effect experienced as vibration which shortens component life significantly. Even a single u joint setup can run very smooth as long as the pinion angle and driveline angle are the same to cancel out the sine wave.

Hey if you live in rust belt thats not a good way to remove ujoints also dont use a ball joint press. Use a vise to suport yoke and hammer other yoke dont bend it. Ask me how I know

Good perspective. Rust is something we don’t battle much here. I can imagine having to be much more cautious in the rust belt. I’m definitely guilty of taking liberties with the press 😬

Glad to hear Sierra Nevada isn't just shity tasting beer. That company is shit too. Haven't had anything from them in years. And will never touch it again my whole life.

Just saw this comment. I agree with you man. Can you imagine the whole wilderness just shut down and not even be able to take the kids to the woods, or go camping or wheeling? Wack
