Hello, I didn't use a catch can instead I used a filter element, Both work great I figure. The big question everyone wonders before doing this is; "will this make any difference over the stock EPA setup?" I can tell you I ran my harley for years breathing into the intake. The throttle body and backing plate and filter were always a mess, Also, when removing the heads for any type of work the pistons were loaded with carbon and so were the combustion chambers. As for the engine running, the tune would be perfect for the first thousand miles or so and then it would always start to drift as the chambers would load up with carbon. Once I went to external breathing I ran the bike for over a year and had to remove the exhaust for transmission work at one point and had to remove the throttle body for an intake leak and I can tell you the intake and exhaust runners were spotless! I scoped the combustion chambers through the spark plug holes and there was almost no carbon on the piston crowns! Also, the bike stayed in perfect tune until I got an unrelated and common intake leak. External breathing works! Period!

Awesome job with this Paul. You made it look easy. I was looking at DK Customs when I 1st got my M8 RG. I had EXTREME blow by where the oil actually ruined one of my wife's shoe. I was so ready to get rid of the bike because of this issue. Thought maybe harley over filled the oil when the 1000 mile service was done, but it wasn't. I changed to Amsoil it stopped. Didn't have an issue again. (28,000 miles) So weird. Not sure if that's what fixed it or not. But I just put Amsoil in it now on. Lol

Question, what would the Harley Davidson factory have done if the EPA didn’t Exist? What would the engine vent look like? From the looks of the transmission top cover, it looks to me like they would’ve simply put another little rubber hose right next to the transmission vent and just vented the thing to atmosphere? Yup, that’s exactly what they would’ve done.

@@PaulOnTheRunI got into the comments on your video to make note of the bolt diameter difference and that I’ve had no oil draining issues through the banjo bolt and into the barbs. Great work Paul! One thing I did about a year or two after doing this mod… I added spring loaded hose clamps at all the hose joints as I had very small amounts of oil squeeze by. They haven’t leaked since I added them. Bike runs great and stays tuned. My pistons are pretty much shiny clean. I built my bypass from scratch and saved money buying the kit.

How do you know the breather bolt threads are timed with the hole you drilled when they are tight and mounted ?
@PaulOnTheRun
@PaulOnTheRun 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t really but the breather bolts have a smaller outside diameter than the inside diameter of the stand-offs so there is plenty of space for any oil mist or condensation to push and makes it’s way out the stand-off barb thru the hose and into the catch can.

Exactly what I needed thank you guys !! Shouldn’t we block the second hole in the breather bolt to make sure it ‘work’ at a 100% efficiency?
@PaulOnTheRun
@PaulOnTheRun 3 жыл бұрын
It’s not necessary because you’ll be blocking the holes it would normally breath thru which are on the back plate of the air cleaner assembly. With those small holes blocked it’s just gonna flow back to the path of lease resistance, which will be the new holes drilled in the breather bolt and up to the new barbs that have been tapped on the stand-offs. @@NoXQc That’s awesome Anthony. So, if I’m not mistaken the breather bolt in that area has a small OD than the I’d o the stand off. It doesn’t need to be aligned as the slight pressure build up will eventually direct it to the hose and down the to the catch can.

It’ll drip on your driveway. If you don’t care, cool. I tried the filter, then a catch can. The filter under the AC was messy and so was the catch can. Oh, and the small breather filter is up high enough to not touch the ground in cornering.

Paul, Did DK Custom say why having the hose routed above the A/C was better than just having the catch can mount down low? (Like under the front of the engine)
@PaulOnTheRun
@PaulOnTheRun 3 жыл бұрын
Not specifically. Other than aesthetics and preference. However a high percentage (on twin cams) route the hose below and leave the catch can dangling below the air cleaner but on the M8's it actually doesn't fit. You can essentially run the hose anywhere you want. I did consider mounting towards the front but preferred this method that was suggested to me by Dwayne @ DK Customs. Deuces ✌
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 3 жыл бұрын
Dwayne here. There simply isn't much room for the catch can on the right side of the M8 Engine. As Paul said, the Twin cam models mostly place the can right beneath the air cleaner but this is not an option on the M8 due to the larger cam chest. You can certainly route the can to the lower front of the bike if you wish. The External Breather kits include 6ft of hose. Some bikes produce excessive oil carryover... routing the hose up initially can reduce the liquid that reaches the end of the external breather system, this is another reason why one may route the hose up and over.
@kevinwarner2268
@kevinwarner2268 3 жыл бұрын
I have similar setup and will have to do the same thing. Is there a tiny gap between your cover over the breather bolts? I know you said in another post that it would still travel down the external breather. With that little gap should I fit in a little spacer to close off the hole at the end of the breather bolt? So it only flows through external breather?
@PaulOnTheRun
@PaulOnTheRun 3 жыл бұрын
On my particular setup I have two rubber o-rings that seal the ends of the breather bolts. also since I plugged the small holes that direct the blow by into the air cleaner it keeps the oil and condensation inside the breather bolt that will then start to flow up the hose and back down to the catch can. Hope this helps.

Since there is enough pressure coming out, yes you could, however, also since the catch can has breather holes (vents) on top by turning it upside down you would just drip all the oil and condensation all over the engine and I still don’t think there is enough space. Hope this helps. Deuces ✌🏼

Would the installation of the breather kit void the warranty?
@PaulOnTheRun
@PaulOnTheRun 4 ай бұрын
The burden of proof would lie on them to directly correlate this modification to a specific point of failure. For example if they claim that this breather was the catalyst to your anti-lock brakes malfunctioning they would need to prove how so. Mostly likely they won’t because there is no connection. Now if they said this modification was the catalyst to some misfire, which I doubt, then they could probably deny repair on their dime. At least this is my understanding of warranty jargon.

Ok, I've watched video 2x. I completely understand the installation process. My question is after drilling holes into stand offs, now a vent hole must be bored into breather bolt. How do you know the new drilled vent hole is gonna line up with new exit into standoff and into barb/hose ? After tightening bolt too head , no way of telling if new pilot vent hole is lined up with new exit? ? Please explain. Tks
@PaulOnTheRun
@PaulOnTheRun Жыл бұрын
The holes don't need to line up. The area where you drill into the breather bolt actually has a smaller diameter than the stand off so there is space between those two for the blowby to find it's way up and out into the hoses. I hope that makes sense and your configuration matches that explanation.

aren't you worried about the rtv sealant getting sucked into your intake? I don't think I'd be comfortable knowing there's a possibility that could happen
@PaulOnTheRun

You know I haven’t given that part much thought but I’m betting if applied correctly, meaning it was properly cleaned, and from what I know on prior experience the RTV shouldn’t even budge towards the intake.

I'm looking into this mod, but I've got a 21' M8 114 with 1500 miles on it and absolutely ZERO misting in my airbox. I'm confused, did H-D fix this?
@PaulOnTheRun
@PaulOnTheRun 3 жыл бұрын
All engines will have some mist (EPA thing). The mystery is always how much. I had a road king 107 and Softail w/110 that didn’t mist really at all but I had a 2012 RGC that misted and my now 2019 RGS. Especially after I put on a different air breather. You may not have a lot of oil mist but all engines have condensation that will get sucked in to the intake. My main goal was to stop the excess oil collecting on my filter and dripping but now benefit from clean air. Deuces ✌🏼

@@PaulOnTheRun Is there any chance of dust getting in ?
@PaulOnTheRun
@PaulOnTheRun 3 жыл бұрын
@@khanibrahim5947 I couldn’t say for sure but you probably have a higher probability of dust intrusion through your air cleaner before it can make it up they the rubber hose. Keep in mind the end of the tube could get clogged up since it will be open to the atmosphere and that small amount of oil will collect dust eventually causing it to be clogged up.

The DK catch can is a bit too pricey for me
@PaulOnTheRun
@PaulOnTheRun 3 жыл бұрын
It might seem like it's a pricey but they are milled out of solid billet and the 4 stage filter in it does exactly what they are supposed to. There are cheaper catch cans out there and I'm no stranger to searching for price breaks but consider why they are cheaper before investing. The support from DK is bar none and take this video for example. This is a direct "how to" for the DK Catch can. The other guys have not put together a video specifically on their own product. There are those that have done the service of creating a video but that was on their own accord and backing. Consider this, use paypal to pay over time. You won't regret it especially if your air cleaner is spewing oil inside of it. If you have any questions let me know. I'd be more than glad to help answer them if I can and thank you for watching.
