Installing flush mount handle on sliding interior doors

How do I replace an old recessed handle with a new one? Is there a way to pry it out without causing a lot of damage to the door? Thanks!

The only thing I do differently is to not use the centre drill bit, and wrap the hole saw with a band of masking tape to set my depth. Sharpen your chisel,and use it correctly.

Try a center bit, it helps get a nice hole started.😉

Finishing 10 of these for a house tomorrow morning. I did 4 today but was limited on hardware, was having trouble tapping in the small nails provided... will normal painters caulking work fine?

I have used the plain old caulking for many of years. Just put enough inside the cut so u feel it about to swish out and let fully set before you mess with the handles. It works for me. ~cheers~

what about after you have made the hole with the holesaw why not use a router or why not go deeper and take up the difference with the glue. Good job anyway.

Is this door made from real wood or MDF?

have you tried just putting a screw into the middle of it....and just pulling it out? Some will just silicone them in.

I tried the screw in the middle and just ripped the plastic apart. Then, I used pliers and started pulling little parts from that middle hole until it finally came all out.

They make a bit for these so you don't need the chisel. It's a Forstner bit

Marty - Possibly but that would require removing the side trim at the rear of the pocket door. These doors where already hung at this particular job. Thanks for the comment 👍

@@karli12041 I'm also looking for a way to remove the existing recessed handle without damaging the door. As it's glued into place, my only idea is to break the handle from the center and tear it out in pieces. Have you found another way to do this?
