We installed a Tesla Wall Connector in Gregs garage to prepare for Greg's new Model Y when it arrives later this year. Have a Look.

I had a spare piece of FRP in the garage so I used it to protect the wall from wear n' tear. I placed in on the wall after I determined where the stud was then I put the wall connector on top of it. No marks on the wall. Remember to place the loop when feeding in the wire to code.

Just installed my wall connector last week on a 50amp circuit. You should have looped the wires around per the instructions, not terminated them straight in.

I had to hire and Certified electrician to do all the work because I live in a condo and they don't allow anyone who isn't certified to do any of the work. The total cost I paid was about $5000 CDN for the installation, drawings, electrical meter, and wall connector unit.

Sensitive to safety, I feel compelled to complete Dave’s title: “Installing Greg’s Tesla Wall Connector, You Can Too….” but only if you are experienced working with high voltages. Mistakes can cause serious injury, fire, or death. If not certain, hire an electrician. Some local codes require a permit and inspection too.

The two hots and ground cables should have been run on the right and up, zip tied and the connected from the top. I assume that is for more accurate temp detection.

Excellent tutorial you will love that wall charger Greg. That's the way I charge my Model 3 . Took 5 months to get a good WiFi signal ,but Im cookin with gas now . .90% of my charging is with this wall unit . And I think trickle charging gives the longest longevity to your battery.

Dave, you should have looped the input feed wires over the top inside of the charger base plate and strained relieved them with the included cable tie on the connecter explicitly placed on the side for that. This is exactly what the Tesla manual says to do. Wires should not be "hung" from their connections if there is any weight on them. Also you should include the lock nut and end bushing so you don't have the sharp edges at the end of the conduit for the wires to abrade against. RTFM and don't show bad practices. Electrically, this charger works fine. Mechanically and by code, not so much.

Thanks for "liking" the comment, Dave. Not trying to be critical for no reason but these things can be dangerous which is why we have codes. There's also another interesting code that is worth mentioning. If a NEMA 14-50 outlet is installed (with all four conductors properly connected to the outlet-two hots, neutral, and ground on a private circuit (even though most EVSEs don't use the neutral), a 50 Amp NEMA 14-50 range cord can be attached to the EVSE to plug it in for no more than 40 Amp continuous draw use (50 Amp breaker). However, and here is the code--- that range cord needs to be trimmed down to only extend from the EVSE by 1' (12"). I believe this code is because the circuit protection for the human is in the unit and the code writers don't want a long extended run of a 50 A cord run from the EVSE to the outlet so if it get's cut by someone running over it, they won't be electrocuted. Since it is limited to 1' length, the probability of damage is small since it can't really dangle down to the floor. (In most EVSEs like a Tesla unit, the neutral conductor in the range cord need not be connected and can be either trimmed and properly capped.) Enjoyed the videos but let's show good practices because lots of people respect your work.

As per the TESLA Wall Connector Installation Instructions it is shown for All entries to have a excess loop in the box, top, bottom, left or right, gotta have the loop. Step 4: Route Wiring Through Wirebox 1. Route wiring into selected entry point and through the service loop channel on the right side of the wirebox.

@@brianbeasley7270 Glad you caught the wiring and lack of insulating bushing violations (at both ends). This "pro" also failed NEC by not properly securing the conduit to both interior/exterior walls. Sad that this video is supposed to encourage others. At 3:06 you can see numerous shoddy exterior wall penetrations that's not part of this install, but a sign of low quality work.

Super informative. Thank you. A question: my electrician supports wiring a cord with plug into the TWC and then plugging it in to a 240 outlet. Are there pros/cons to that approach?
@evdave528
@evdave528 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, a plug shows only 40 amps continuous, best to hardwire with disconnect if local code requires it. Then you get a full 50 amps of charging. 60 amp breaker to feed it.

@keithharrington8715

As an electrical guy, you did not provide enough information to answer your question. Individual wires (conductors) have Insulation rated for different environments but must be in conduit. Cables do not need conduit normally, but most building departments want conduit when the wiring is not protected by the wall (people side of sheetrock vs inside wall side of sheetrock). Wire sizing is maximum, maximum, amps of charger times 125%. A 40 Amp charger needs at least 50 amps of wire and breaker. This is in section 625 Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (car charging). There is also a requirement for a gfci if you put a receptecle in for the car charger section 625.54. For you wire size, section 110.14 says that the wire connected to the breaker should be in the 60 degree Celsius column of table 310.16. Can you do this yourself, yes. Is there a lot to know, yes. If you want the satisfaction of doing it yourself, do plenty of research and considering hiring a pro at least as a consultant to get that knowledge. He may have solved a problem you did not know you had 5 times last week.

My question is slightly off-topic, but remember Dave installing both a Wall Connector (WC) and a NEMA 14-50 EVSE receptacle. Maybe it was at his or a family member’s home. We know the WC doesn’t require white common wire. But, do other EVs such as Mach e, ID.4, Taycan, Audi, Bolt, Polestar, Kia, etc require the common wire for 120 v while charging? Add the common wire or eliminate it?
@rhmbob82
@rhmbob82 2 жыл бұрын
Don’t know what the others require, but I thought about the same and plan to pull a common wire even if it won’t be used with the Tesla wall connector. Easier to do it now than later.
@johnpoldo8817
@johnpoldo8817 2 жыл бұрын
@@rhmbob82 Bob, I too added the common wire on two NEMA 14-50 EVSEs installed. I wasn’t certain if some other EV brand requires a common wire. Another concern is the receptacle might be in a semi-public setting and someone might plug in any 240V apparatus (ie welder) which requires a common. We don’t want any smoke.
@evdave528
@evdave528 2 жыл бұрын
In the charge point walk connector, on the 14-50 reception was only ground and single Phase 240 no neutral. Mach e charges fine.
