Eric - Great video and preview of this. I was able to complete the install over the course of a weekend taking my time in my garage. Brakes feel great on my 2016, I believe the larger master is on this vehicle from the factory. Anyway - thanks again for the detailed install and lending the confidence for me to get this done!

Thanks for this video. I just recently ordered the JL HD brake kit from powerstop after watching this. I just got the j8 booster/master in as well as the rear calipers/rotors. Waiting for the fronts to come in to start the install.

Hello, So is this just OEM JL Rubicon "HD" rotors, and Calipers/pads? I have the J8 ready to go on, but found JLS HD reman MOPAR calipers and new rotors for about $400
@EricCantin
@EricCantin Жыл бұрын
Yes. Depending on the year and options, other models had the same rotors calipers and pads, but only one size was offered on the Rubicons. The Xtreme Recon seems to use the Glatiator rotors which have better cooling. Haven’t taken a rotor off to see if the normal Rubicon rotors are interchangeable.

I have seen a few times. Anti seize on brake bolts. And have seen use locktite. I would worrry about anti seize and brake bolt backing out. Thoughts?
@EricCantin
@EricCantin 6 ай бұрын
I might be lucky, but I’ve only had suspension hardware covered in anti seize loosen, but that also happens on dry fasteners and even loctite didn’t do the trick. I tear apart and service brakes at least twice a year, so have lots of opportunities to catch anything loosening.

Eric. Great installation video. I have been wondering about wether the JL brakes would fit on the JK, like many others. I am currently out of country for work and need to order an upgrade to the brakes on my ‘12 JKUR. Since my son works at NAPA. I can have him source the parts. This way I can have what I need to get this done as soon as I get home in late May. I was wondering if you have been able to test if the brakes are working as intended? Especially the rears. Since you seemed to have some hesitation about figment and functionality in the video. Additionally, do you have a part number/source for the kit you used? Thanks.

Thanks! The brake feel is very balanced between both axles. And brake lock diff works as it should. It went together easier than I expected, and was constantly waiting for the ohh crap moment (that never happened). The stock master cylinder is certainly undersized for these larger calipers. I should have the J8 master cylinder and booster installed by this weekend to address that issue. Another video installation will follow. I used the Mopar kit (the part number is in the video title). Others are sourcing the same parts JL Rubicon brake parts from 3rd party vendors. Good luck!

Interesting and intriguing idea. Just to make it clear.. This kit is a direct bolt on to a JK ? I have a 2008 JKU. If I look up the part number it says will not fit a 2008 JK. And woul you have the installed dimension of the new set up? as in Diameter, trying to ascertain if my rims will clear the caliper
@EricCantin
@EricCantin 3 жыл бұрын
They bolted up to my JKU. Only had to “mod” the shield. Very common for a part to be designed for one vehicle but work on another (especially JL vs JK). I didn’t measure the parts, but fit fine with the stock 17” wheels I have. If you see your wheels on a JL Rubicon you know they will clear.

So the JL kit should work on JK's with the Dana 30 axles also? I believe the brakes are the same on the JK's on the Dana 30 and Dana 44 models?

This Jeep has a Dana 30 front axle. As far as I know, all JKs use the same knuckle (unless RHD) and all have the same caliper bracket mounting points. Good luck!

Overall this is excellent info! The only question I have is : did you use spacers to fit the brakes on the factory Moabs? That's the only thing stopping be from pulling the trigger. Thanks!
@EricCantin
@EricCantin 3 жыл бұрын
I added the spacers due to tire width / to clear the swaybar & frame before doing this modification. If you rewatch the video, I do show how the Moab wheels cleared these calipers before reinstalling the wheel spacers. Balancing weights will dictate if it works or not.

Any issues with balancing your tires with regards to clearance? I have a 2015 JKU rubicon and considering this. I have the stock 17” rubicon wheels. I figure it should fit since the JL rubicon also uses 17” wheels. Did you have any issues with your wheels weights?
@EricCantin
@EricCantin 2 жыл бұрын
I think I showed clearance with stock wheels before installing the wheel adapters. Seemed like inside wheel weights could clear if mounted on lip and not stuck on. Correct, since these are JL brakes and the caliper is perfectly centered on the rotor, JL rims should clear identically as if they were on a JL.

Is there any benefit of using these JL brakes compared to using the Mopar big brake kit (paired with the J8 and new master cylinder) for the JK? Seems like the only major difference is the rear calipers have a larger piston. . .Thanks!
@EricCantin
@EricCantin 3 жыл бұрын
I went this route for ease of finding replacement parts in the future. From what I could gather while researching the Mopar JK big brake kit, it uses the same booster and master cylinder available separately from the J8 (which I now have). The calipers and pads are readily available from a Ram or other vehicles, but the caliper brackets and rotors are specific to the kit (not a stock part used on other North American vehicles). So finding those replacement parts at a parts store will be challenging and could leave your Jeep unusable for a few days. With the JL HD brake kit, the parts are as common as the stock JK brake parts. The larger rear rotors, calipers and pads are a sweet bonus. Hope that helps!

Any issues with brake lines? Did you reuse what the JK had or swap to JL lines? My understanding is the JL lines are not the same thread at the hard-lines as JK. Was this an issue for you?
@EricCantin
@EricCantin 3 жыл бұрын
I reused the JK lines, they attached nicely. I have different brake line anchors that may have mitigated any length issues.

@EricCantin
@EricCantin 3 жыл бұрын
JL Rubicon brakes would be the same as these. If installing on a JK/JKU, you'll likely find the stock master cylinder to require more brake pedal travel than stock.

They seem to be, and they still look good after one winter exposed to salt. Those are the OEM 17” wheels with 1” wheel spacers. I think I tested these rims without the wheel adapters, and the calipers cleared. Other OEM rims may need wheel adapters.

@EricCantin 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! This one is a 2012, so should have the larger master cylinder VS the older JKs. It definitely needs more fluid capacity for these brakes to feel "right". So looking forward to getting the J8 booster and master cylinder.

@@EricCantin Thanks for the link! The part I'm getting hung up on are the rear rotors. For a HD Rubicon it lists either 590AC or 592AC. I'm not sure on the differences, but what I could find by referencing other sites is that the 592AC has "FNC" associated with it (Ferritic Nitrocarburizing). I also saw the 590AC as being for manuals on one site. No dimensions are listed for either, so I could not compare them. Let me know if you are aware of any more differences between these two rotors.
@EricCantin
@EricCantin 3 жыл бұрын
@@brianyuen1945 If you go generic aftermarket, they'll likely have one part that covers the 342mm rear rotors. When I have the choice between two almost identical parts, sometimes the wallet picks the cheaper part, or I decide to splurge and hope it was a good investment.

Tell me one thing why do you need bigger brakes on off-road vehicle? XD Stopping power is the same, weight is worse, clearance to rims is worse, mud problems are worse due to clearance. You would not tell me that you need better heat distortion after multiple stops from 140mph😂😂😂😂
