This episode is getting close to the final build of the HO Scale Carrier Princess for the HO Scale layout - River Road. I cover some tips on lighting a miniature model with user friendly LED light kits. The final episode on the Carrier Princess will follow this one on the usual Sunday feature release.

Red’s right comin’ at ya. ;-). A good video trick when you want video of slow moving trains is to run the train faster than you want it to be running in the final video and then slow the video when you edit it 30% or more. It gives the cars mass when they move or even sway. The ship is awe inspiring. cheers, Rob

Beats the bad old days of grain of wheat and grain of rice bulbs which are so hot. Shep Paine used them I his shadow box dioramas but he had to use brass sleeves as shades -- LEDs are so superior and efficient, producing light instead of heat.

Dear Boomer, awesome is the word! Ever since you showed the Evans led’s I put them on my ‘hard drive.’ Love their assortment, different styles and solutions. On the bridge rectifier, yes indeed, after the rectification folks need to be careful with the lamp leads. Marking of course works, but also cutting the 2 wires askew, a long piece and a short piece, that will be another convenient way to keep the right wire pairs together. Beautiful how you made those different light bezels. Will look stunning when in operation sequence! Cheerio

Boomer, I'm amazed every time I see this model, to think that it was once just card stock and assorted tubes, it's a work of art! Love the opening shot! Really looking forward to what comes after the Princess is complete, but not in a rush to se it finished! 😃 When you cut the wires, stagger the cut so the one wire is longer than the other, the +ve for example, so it will be long on the bulb and short coming from the rectifier. Should save some LED's from getting cooked.

Looking great! Adding lights to a model makes a HUGE difference. My last project involved my first experience of driving fiber optics from low voltage LEDs in order to have formation lights at proper scale. Turned out to be much easier than I'd anticipated. Gotta be willing to "try"; the worst that can happen is you fail (for now) and learn (for next try)!

When I was training other engineers, they'd ask me what it's been like. I'd tell them I've spent 30 plus years backing up in the dark. Point being my work was primarily in the wee hours. When I conceived my layout I was determined that it reflect what I experienced running trains at night so it will be lit by these little lights appropriately applied. Thank goodness for the WS system and your tips are well noted . Thanks again Brother!

Lights are awesome on the model railroad scene. Especially when you can control the "ambient" room lighting as well. They do have a small learning curve but easily achieved if you think things through and find a solution. Once you get them up and running they add a whole new experience to the layout as you described. Cheers and thanks for taking the time to share your (real world) experience as well. 👍😁

If you are not sure on lighting get two pairs of flip-flops, one red and one green. If you then throw away the right hand of the red pair and the left one of the green pair then you'll be good.... Ideal for the marine engineering and weapons electrical branches of both the merchies and they warfighters. Seriously, an awesome tutorial once more! TY Boomer!!

Lighting up a model is always a lot of fun!😁👍🏻 Good cable routing is actually always one of the biggest problems. In this model you have a lot of space, even if the windows allow a lot of view inside, where visible cables would actually be annoying. But I like your DIY cable duct.😎👌🏻 I've been lighting mainly H0 vehicles since 2002 and have some experiences, so I recently drilled through the center tunnel of the interior of an H0 Audi A4 Safty Car and used it as a cable duct😊 (well, I solder my LEDs myself and usually use 0.1 mm enameled CU wire, so that works, but this is "well hidden"🤭 in my 6 minutes video, most people skip this part😒). To be honest, the only thing I don't like about your lighting here are the two 1.8 mm LEDs in the spotlights, the lenses stick out too far and it doesn't look quite as nice. Perhaps they could have been inserted deeper into the spotlight housing if the square part of the LEDs had been filed a little round, that works well with these kind of LEDs (e.g. you can file 3 mm LEDs almost to the size of an SMD 1206 LED, that's no problem , I did this years ago with blinking LEDs; got the tip from a friend). Using SMD 0603 LEDs would also have worked, they are available with quite the same brightness, and even with lenses for an even better light beam. But well, you'd have to solder them yourself, they're just not available from Evan Designs... By the way, it's a shame that we don't have Evan Designs products sold in Germany, they have some really nice things that I really could use (police siren sound module, Wig-Wag module...), something that no one else produces. Unfortunately, ordering in the USA is too expensive for me... Anyway, your ship and the lighting looks awesome, absolutely great work!👍🏻🤩👏🏻

Personally I use a laptop power supply, 19v DC rated at 5amp to power lighting, simple cheap but effective. 15v are available as well but less common. Lighting really makes a difference it can be time consuming to fit/hide but when the lights go down..... boy does it look cool.

LEDs are like a transistor and the positive and negative current must be absolutely correct or they will burn out if the polarity is incorrect. There are numerous U-tube sites or books on how to determine which wire goes where. The LEDs would have had a long and a short leg if bought raw or one can look for the flag inside.
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama 8 сағат бұрын
O.K. Respectfully, I get what you say, but these ones by (Evans Design) are prewired with the rectifier so they don't have a short and long leg on the connecting wire. If you modify them to thread a small hole from one end you have to cut and re-solder them. Cheers.😁

Not sure exactly what you were doing when you burned out 3 LED's, but in general, you can wire LED's in the reverse direction and the only thing that happens is they don't light. However, if you wire up an LED in the "on / forward" direction and you don't have a current limiting resistor, you can burn them out.

Compare any Evans light with any Woodland led light and tell me whats different. Cut away the Evans bridge rectifier thingy and wire your Evans led directly to the Woodland Hub ,when it doesn't work just switch your connections to correct the Polarity and now you can operate 3x more Evans Led's using the Woodland Lighting Hub. The Evans rectifier thingy consumes alot of juice you don't need it ever again
