It's a good idea to "seal" the acrylic fabric where the drill hole is by essentially melting it with a burning tool. That way the puncture won't run or fray even with the snap riveted on top.

Trying to melt the acrylic after the rivet has been placed sounds a lot more likely to cause a problem. We've never seen a case where the fabric ran or frayed where the snap bases are riveted in.

Nice video!!! It was the "drilling into the roller tube that caused me to pause on this project. I was really afraid of either drilling into the roller components...or ripping up the awning fabric as I drilled into it! Thanks very much for doing the video!!!

To allay your fear, if you just poke the drill bit through the metal, enough to make a hole for the rivet, you won't damage anything in the awning tube. The video gives you an additional tip for making sure your drill bit does not go in far. We've installed the Sun Shade on several of our own Airstreams with no problems. Happy camping!
