In the eighties I had one on my turntable called Dust Bug. It came with cleaning solution which you placed on the brush and it cleaned the record and removed all anti static, had it for years and it kept my albums in good condition.

I vaguely remember those in the day. In the early 80's, I was more of a punk kid who was not above taping a penny to my stylus head to keep things from skipping :)

Hi! Thanks for the demo. Wondering if you could share the height of product from adhesive base to counterweight top. I'm curious if it would fit under my lid, but don't find the dimensions anywhere...
@JeffMcCormack777

It sits a about 2.25 inches high. I have the generic Audio Technica one and it fits under the lid with space to spare. Hope that helps.

I just started using one tonight on a project table, had to install it in the left rear corner, making the pickup arm on the far side. Tryed to experiment with weather adding weight twards the brush makes it track faster or slower? Seems to pick up crud out of the groves, tells me i should do a better job pre cleaning. So far less slide weight equils slower tracking.
@JeffMcCormack777
@JeffMcCormack777 Жыл бұрын
I haven't even tried adjusting the weight (kind of forgot it was there), so it is always all the way to the back of it. I notice on some records it speeds across, while on others it doesn't. Maybe I should try tinkering with that weight more.

@@JeffMcCormack777I finally got mine to slow down and track slower. Had to back off the large rear weight and turn the brush to the right slightly. Now its better but still not great.

I've used a similar one for over 50 years, that should tell you if they're any good. Mine has a felt roller pad as well, to pick up the loose debris. I just brush the dust off the pad at the end of side.

Very nice. As a kid 50 years ago, I guess we never had a clue about tool like this. Of course, in those days, we did silly things like taping a pennie to the cartridge to keep it from skipping ... tsk tsk :)

What is the wire needed for? Will it work without plugging it in? I have a very old player I don’t think there’s anywhere for me to plug it into
@JeffMcCormack777

It is a ground wire to reduce the static. It can be connected to anything grounded.

Does the counterweight interfere with the dust cover when it's closed?
@JeffMcCormack777
@JeffMcCormack777 2 жыл бұрын
In hindsight, I wish I had commented about that, but no, it does not as long as you place it far enough away. Because as the tone arm portion of it rotates further into the record, of course the counterweight rotate outward. If the base of the unit is too far back, it would cause the counterweight to hit the cover, and the tonearm portion would of course stop halfway thru the record and just sit there. But I placed it far enough from the back of the cover, that it freely moves without ever getting near the cover.

In the 70s you had a Decca record cleaner, looked a little bit different but worked like this one. Your one has a head with a combination of goathair and fibres, there's also one with only fibres which confuses me. In the Netherlands the price is 22 euros for the fibre one and the one with goathair/fibres 38 euros. What is the advantage of the last one?
@JeffMcCormack777
@JeffMcCormack777 9 ай бұрын
Interesting. I'm not sure the advantages of one over the other. The general idea seems to work fine, but maybe different hair types get more into the grooves for better pick up?

I'm wondering does the turntable dust cover interfere with the brush when the turntable dust cover is closed?
@JeffMcCormack777
@JeffMcCormack777 2 жыл бұрын
No, as long as you place it properly, the tonearm can do the full arc across the record, and the counterweight won't rotate into the cover. I wish I had better mentioned the placement and shown the arc and swivel of it in the video.

Interesting piece of gear! Does it track along the vinyl as it plays? The anti static grounding wire seems like it would work, did you notice a difference?
@JeffMcCormack777
@JeffMcCormack777 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think the anti static part reduces some of the crackles. It tracks, sometimes right along, sometimes a little faster reaching the inner label, but it follows the grooves pretty well.
@ThomasRodriguez
@ThomasRodriguez 9 ай бұрын
If you have any issues with how it tracks the groves, adjust the slider piece on the arm and/or the counter weight so that it has more or less pressure until it tracks how you want it to.

Thanks for showing this Jeff, I've been thinking about trying one. Did you notice any reduction in static?
@JeffMcCormack777
@JeffMcCormack777 2 жыл бұрын
I checked a few brand new releases, and while I did not do an A/B test, it did seems there was less crackling noise on them. I honestly hadn't noticed a huge amount of evidence of static issues before, so is hard to say a big noticeable difference immediately, but peace of mind thinking it helps with dust and static is worth it for me. :)
@fourlights5751
@fourlights5751 2 жыл бұрын
nope, lol, I even tried adjusting the counterweight to add more pressure on the record, it does look really cool though lolol...I feel like something like "reducing static" is really complicated. I cleaned the record with a spray, I cleaned the stylus with those little gel things you dip it into. Then I tried the Hudson Hi-Fi, I noticed nothing. Same amount of static. Same pops and clicks. I am baffled, if anybody has any thoughts on how to solve this, I'm open to suggestions!

I've seen these for decades. I have never used one. I'm servicing a TT that has one. I believe your post is stating it would make a sonic difference? I will try one. Dust is everywhere in the air. Depending on the composition of the bristles, I would think if grounded it could help with static charges. My TT weighs 100 lbs. I doubt I will hear a difference except for static reduction.
@bobbymccourt6794
@bobbymccourt6794 Жыл бұрын
Unless you're using an O-scope or distortion meter you will not hear any resonance difference. I've been using one for over a year and can tell you the improvement in pop and crackle reduction is far greater benefit than any "Resonance" issues it likely doesn't induce.
