Installing the WeatherTech Stone & Bug Deflector on My Toyota Tacoma. Hopefully putting the WeatherTech Deflector on will stop rocks from hitting my Tacomas windshield and keep the bugs off too! As a bonus, this piece looks pretty good on the truck tppo! What do you think?

Man Rob, I am amazed that you just figured out to install this deflector on your truck! It was one of those items that was a MUST HAVE for me, even before I actually GOT my truck! I had it ordered and waiting in my bedroom along with my TRD Pro grill, when I finally took delivery of my 2019 TRD Sport. I saw a pic somewhere online of a truck with the same color I was getting, and I KNEW from that pic, that I wanted the deflector. NOT because of what it is supposed to do, but purely for aesthetic reasons. I LOVE the way it looks, as it brings a balance to the front end, with the black on top. I also got the AVS verson. Regarding the rubber bumpers for the deflector, for one thing, I would not put them on the paint either! My instructions that came with the AVS, specifically said to put them on the DEFLECTOR itself, which I did. As you pointed out, the deflector is pretty solid and I can't see it buckling in the wind and hitting the hood either, but I put the bumpers on there anyway. As soon as you closed the hood though, I noticed a HUGE improvement in the way your truck looks from the front. Good job!

This product is awsome !! Just yesterday a stone came off a 18 wheeler on the highyway and bounced from the road and slaped right into this deflector and went right over the truck. Deflector didnt even get a scratch on it and If i didnt have this it would of sure dented my hood and chipped my window..Great mod for all highly recommend and looks fabulous especially on these tacomas.. Rob looks awsome !!! i didnt use the stoppers either you dont need them that impact that mine took it didnt budge.. thumbs up..!!

I installed on my 2018 off road hoping it would help deflect anything (especially rocks). I did not: another windshield replacement pending. No real reduction in path for rocks to hit your windshield. Looks ok, but I may remove some day since it really doesn’t do anything.

I have the same deflector. I put the adhesive stoppers on the back of the deflector. For over two years no issues.

Dang, Rob....your thought on how it would fit into your truck’s “color scheme” was right on target. Looks great....and it forces the eye to flow along the hood edge, up the fender to the mirrors! Bravo-Zulu! After numerous trips down I-81 in my 2016 over three years, (MA to TN to care for aging parents) I went through two windshields, and had three “chip divots” repaired. I can’t tell you how often I utilized good “sailor language” at the “GD 18 wheelers without mud flaps or canvas tops on dump beds! Safelite knew me by name! When I traded it in for my 2020, the dealer noted the after-market windshield....vs having an OEM. So if this will work, I’m all for it! I’m just concerned that over time, if that paint underneath will receive less of my attention and care. Still, I am considering it. Thank you, sir.....and again, nice job!

Good investment in my opinion. Surprised you didn’t get it as a first purchase when you got your Taco. It’s a life saver when driving here in the valley. I’ve had mine and it’s done a great job holding up. I didn’t put the tab protector either . Great video.

Looks great! Weather Tech makes great quality stuff. I have the same thing on my truck along with their floor mats and window vents. The vents looks great and can help reduce the terrible, Texas heat by slightly cracking the windows when you stop at Walmart or wherever. The vents are smoked just like the stone/ bug guard. With tinted windows, no one will notice that you’ve cracked them. This will provide better cross ventilation so when you get back in , the cabin, steering wheel, gear shift, and other items will not feel as hot.

I put the Weather Tech bug shield on my 2016 Tundra in Sept 2015 when new using the protection bumps in kit with no issues.👍 Very good product and it actually works.👍 Keeps sand debris on roads from chipping my hood.👍

If I lived in an area, like yours, where rocks were hitting my windshield I might have second thoughts. I’ve used WeatherTech bug deflectors on both of my Toyota’s before. The rubber stoppers/bumpers (final step) do work but yes they will fall off on occasion - and no, they don’t affect the paint at all. I live in a rainy state and I figured the constant rain eventually made the one stopper/bumper fall off each time. I just called Weather Tech and they sent me new ones… and those haven’t fallen off after years.

Hey Rob I had on my 2016 and didn't like the way it looked so I went was the protective clear paint film from Toyota I also know people that have them took them off because it started rubbing on the pain on that point on the bug deflector closest to the grill

I'm really looking for protection for the windshield in the form of rock deflection. Film is a great way to protect the paint it's covering, but not much help directing rocks away from the windshield.

I installed my avs deflector. It sits 1-2 inches from the hood. I put the clear stoppers under the hood to prevent rubbing and not on top. I should have placed them on the deflector because I tried to move one of them and it took the paint off under the hood.

Hey Rob, I installed on when I got my Tacoma and I did not like the look. It made my truck look like it had a big nose. So I returned it. I did get the weather tech window deflector. That made the truck look really nice. You should look into getting that next. Anyways, if you like the look then good for you. Be safe!

I had a toyota brand bug shield years ago. It came with stick on rubber spacers. I stuck them on the deflector as opposed to the paint. They stayed on for the 18 years i owned the truck.

I hesitated putting one on my '17 Highlander prior to going to Fla. Sure enough, I caught a rock from a boat trailer and now have a chip. Heading back down soon and just bought one. Hoping it helps. I also have a Tacoma that's been hit twice, once just a chip that was filled with silicone, but then another that cracked it. Weathertech must have two kind of hood defectors because yours is a clip on and another one I see is a M3 double sided tape... Was going to get on for the 2020 Honda CRV hybrid... but I want the same design as yours.

They had to send me three of them. First one didn’t fit right, scratched the edge of my hood. Second one didn’t have all the holes drilled. Third didn’t fit perfect but was good enough at that point. Doesn’t keep as many bugs off the windshield as I’d hoped.

I can't believe it, I actually have a modification before Rob!!!! Granted, mine is a different brand, but I really like yours as well. Mine was installed with pre-positioned 3M tape strips. I've had good luck in the past with this 3M tape. I really like the way yours screws on to the truck. I just found it funny, that I had a bug/debris shield before you. Normally, it is the other way around. Now, on to another question, if you have time. I really love your lift. How much clearance does it require? I found a couple of lifts online, but I'm not sure how much clearance I would need to have one installed. My storage/garage building has those A-frame rafters in it. A reply estimate of height would be greatly appreciated! Take care my friend. Your modifications rock!!! I also like your down-to-earth presentations as well. We could easily sit down and drink coffee anytime!

I’ve tried the bug/stone deflector back in the 90s, still got hit buy both maybe they have improved the design. Just a thought if you put the little rubber bumpers on the deflector and it ever did come into contact with the hood .... the rubber is going to have dust and grime on it. Will work like sand paper on the paint. Like I said just a thought. Enjoyed the video.

Honestly the reason I’m researching this is I just had 7k worth the damage fixed on my 2020 Tundra from kids throwing rocks from an orchard as I drove by. I have had them on other vehicles and they helped. One rock hit so hard it shattered the windshield and blew glass on me and damaged the radar system. Since I see a small area that is open on either side of the hood contours have you noticed any drag or fuel mileage loss.

Hey Rob- I just picked up one of these and it is making contact with both headlights with the hood closed all the way. Presses against them with a significant amount of force. Have you checked yours/is there actually space between the edges of the deflector and the headlights? I'm hoping this is a manufacturing flaw because my headlights are noticeably flexing, and you can see them move when pressing/lifting the edges of the deflector. Thanks!

I love your truck. I do not care for the look of the bug shield or the shift nob. The bug shield really just breaks up the smooth flow of the front of the tacoma. But it only matters if you like it so just giving you my opinion. Please keep the videos coming. You do a good job on them.

On another note, I think the reason you're supposed to stick the little paint protector pads to the paint is because if and when the 2 surfaces get dirty, you'd rather have rubbing happen to a plastic deflector than your paint.

Welcome to the channel! Not really sure TBH? When you get one you’ll see that the plastic is pretty rigid. I can’t see it ever contacting the hood short of a catastrophic impact 🤔

For me Rod. I put a PPF Paint Protection Film in my hood and windshield just to play it safe. Its all clear. You check also some PPF installer in your area. Here in our country Philippines i put Ceramic Coating and kavaca PPF in my 2019 Hilux 4wd.

I hear folks all the time saying that deflectors do not work. My father LIVES on the highway and installs them on EVERYTHING. Doesnt stop ALL rock chips, but definitely stops the majority.

Hi Rob, I was wondering when you would get to this. I have installed one on my TRD Sport, love the look with the design of that hood. I used an AVS deflector, looks identical to the one you installed. I'm not sure how effective they are, I've put on many trucks and have taken direct hits to the windshields including my current Sport. I guess smaller objects may deflect up and over. I do think they are effective at protecting the hood. As far as the plastic bumpers go, I agree I don't think they are needed. I put two on my current install near the wing tips and they have moved when hot.

Welp - this was my next mod. Anyway, about those nobbie things - I recommend putting on the vehicle cause I’ve seen paint rubbed off, down to the metal, cause abrasives, sand/grime/other crap, get in there and do damage. I’d rather the damage occur on the deflector vice the hood. BUT, as you described, they may not even be necessary due to the contour of the hood. At any rate - I lived in CO and NE and these serve their intent well during the fall-spring time. Nothing will prevent an impact from ever happening. Despite the negative appearance claims I don’t think it looks bad - it’s a functional addition to protect your investment.

Looks good rob. I think the next mod should be an oil can separator ( oil catcher) to me it’s a life changer, not too long ago it was brought to my attention about oil getting into the valves on the Tacoma 3rd gen model so I purchased a JlT oil separator I know I could’ve bought another brand for less money but I like the fit and placement of this model I have recently done my following maintenance on my Tacoma and had checked the oil catch can and was surprised to see how much oil could’ve got into my Tacoma. I think it is one of the best mods and recommend any third GEN Tacoma owner must have.

Hey I guess I’m in the minority here I do like the way it looks and believe me they are functional, I have the same weather tech deal on my rebel, they’re made just 30 miles east of me in Bolingbrook Illinois!! I noticed right away before I put it on, The bugs on the windshield were ridiculous, afterwards it’s a lot better!! They’re very easy to clean to, Plus the finish holds up well in hot sunlight!! Some other brand that I had on my GMC that thing faded terribly!! So I think myself looks kind a cool!! LOL Rob you could always got a chrome one😂🤣!!!
