Installing Two New Culverts In A Washed Out Driveway

Installing two new culverts in a washed out driveway. This is the job where we put all the rip rap in front of the shop building, with 8" of rain from the week before the 12" culvert couldn't carry all the water. So I'm adding two plastic 18" culverts and moving the ditch to allow for more water to flow in. The depth of the pipes and pond limit how water can get in at one time but these should help from the driveway washing hopefully. Thanks for watching! #EliteEarthworks #Takeuchi #Culverts

I didn’t see any arguments on bell direction… so, I’m thinking you got it right!!! LOL If they keep the leaves and brush out of the basin, it should handle a lot of water. I picked 12 grapples full of leaves and sticks out of the road culvert this month. I’ve never seen so much debris floated out of Sassafras Valley. I was going to clear the brush out this summer but it catches so much debris, I think I’ll leave it be for another year and study the issue. That was a nice transformation… Chris would be proud!!!

Looks great as usual, straightening the ditch out makes sense, the curve may look nice, but (well, from memory, when I used to see rain) water will always try to "straighten the curves" and would eventually mess up the road again. Enjoyed that, thanks!

Yea, water carves out the turns until the turn eventually connects to another bend in the river and becomes a straighter path.

Yep, lazy curving rivers become raging straight through-ways during floods… eventually they carve their way into straight aways, given enough floods. I’ve been watching the creek across from my house do that. About 35 years ago they put in a 4 lane divided highway. They put in new bridges with concrete and rip-rap to divert the creek. The next curve after that is in front of my house. The creek flows a lot faster now and my curve is being carved out foot by foot! It has already made a two acre island on the inside of the bend. Mother Nature always wins in the end!!!

Good looking job, well done! My County Judge told me that USGS has an app online to calculate volumns of water and pipe sizing for a "given rain amount over a traceable land area". He said he uses it often to upgrade the pipe sizing to fit a particular site. I haven't used it.

There are couplers, tees, and wyes for dual wall HDPE. they are fabricated from pieces fused together. we have a local supplier here that can make them up for contractors.

Yeah they make all kinds of fittings for them which work nice. I haven’t had too many jobs where I’ve used them for more drainage stuff vs just a culvert

Always enjoy your videos! I hear people say the same thing you said that 2-18” are the same as 1-36” pipe. The area of a 36” pipe is ~1,000 square inches. An 18” is ~250. 2-18” is still only 1/2 what 1-36” will flow. I don’t disagree with your approach, you have to make due with what grade you have to work with. Thanks for sharing all these videos, I’m sure they are a lot of work!

That was a fun job, looks great. FYI where a similar stream leaves my property is 2 18 inch double wall pipes. They have their bell ends pointing up stream. During a very large rain, the stream overflowed the road. After the water went down I found both bell ends collapsed over the end of both pipes. Had a hard time bending them back out. Second time it happened I cut off the unused bells.
