Those lamterns really perform. This past week, our pastor reminded us that light ✨️shines the brightest the darker it becomes. Let's keep our lights filled with oil 🛢🔦🪔💡🛋

Greetings from Maine! I still use my oil lamps, both at home and on our island house. I have several dozen asst styles, most antiques. A bit of advice, if I may. Make it a habit to always remove and replace the chimney by the base. This allows you to remove it safely even when burning. Also, trim wicks occasionally as needed and round the corners ever so slightly. This will provide a clean flame without what is known as "rabbit ears" or smoke points. Every few burns it's a good idea to raise the wick and pinch off burned wick with a paper towel for a neater burn. Lastly, if you light the lamps, but initially keep the flame low until the lamp warms (a few minutes), you can then raise the wick for a beautiful, bright flame. And since i am rambling on, I must share with you one of my personal pet peeves. People who watch westerns and old movies will note that almost every time the lamp is cranked up and the chimney is smoky. Drives me nuts lol! Anyway, we used to clean the chimneys with kerosene on a rag to remove build-up, but with today's parafin oils, warm, soapy water does the job. Just keep in mind that chimneys are fragile! Enjoy!! There's no better ambiance. ❤😊❤

Good idea! I love my oil lamps, and have 6 of the original parlor sized ones. For task lighting, I have Rayo lamps (they stopped making them in the 1920's), that have round wicks, give off as much light as a 40 watt bulb, and throw a lot of heat (I'm in MI). I have plenty of lamp oil, but originally kerosene was used in them, and still can be. I use technology from 3 different centuries in my prep's. Never hurts to have backup's for your backup's!

We live in the UK, I have watched you guys for about 6 years now, maybe more (again, I am one of the rocket stove video clan lol! Followed from that video) and I love all of your videos! It's a brings a joy to my week seeing what you guys get up to, you both remind me of two of my grandparents in both personalities, my grandfather Was also called Bill (William) and had an amazing knowledge of building and engineering. I am only 31 so I hope I'm not aging you too much! 😂 I had never heard of prepping, well not in any more than a passing thought anyways. I am absolutely nowhere on your scale, but I don't believe we have a whole lot of people who actually do that over here, so I figured we could make a start on some very basic prepping. This is another brilliant video of something I wouldn't have thought of 🙂. We are actually planning on moving out of our tiny city home in Yorkshire in a couple years, we've just purchased 11 acres of land in North Wales...Lots of plans ahead!

Prepping is important - everywhere in the world. We are in for some VERY difficult times ahead! These difficult times will be world-wide, as we head into the Great Tribulation of the Bible. And we must be prepared physically, emotionally, and most of all - spiritually! There's no downside to being prepared!

I was happy to see that there was a bottom hole to stabilize the !intern from rocking on the one screw. My OCD was kicking in when I thought why, "don't you take the lantern out of the holder to hang it?". Also for those who don't want to dust these or they or not your kind of decor. You could have them in you storage and put the screws up behind calendars or wall decor and they could come out during the outage. Another prepper source for light is oil on water in clear glass. You use floating wicks and regular cooking oil even works as a fuel if you're in a pinch. You its very versatile. I would GRT a table lamp instead of another wall lamp. Because the most important thing you need to see is the path way. I know you can take them down but one already down is a good access and then you wouldn't have to keep moving the others. Loving you guys letting your light so shine that others may see your good works.

I lived in Northern California during the PSPS (The power company would shut down the power to the entire town for up to 10 days due to wildfire risk) and used oil lamps every night. There were 4 hour lines for gasoline. There is something about living without electricity, maybe its the difference in the light, which enriches the experience and makes time slow down. I enjoyed it very much,.

I have had some just like this for about 30 years. they have moved to several houses over the years but have always been a "permanent" part of my décor. they have come in handy many times. one of those things I would never give up. I hand in my living room, kitchen and dinner areas and hallways.

Hi Bill and Elizabeth. Those mounted lamps are such a good idea. Another good thing to have is an emergency radio. The one we keep in the living room is a small one, with AM, FN, and weather band. It has a hand crank, as well as batteries, and also a small solar panel. It even has a flashlight built in. It even acts as a battery bank to charge a cell phone. It wasn't very expensive, less than $20 on Amazon, and it's a nice backup with a backup to the backup in case we need it. There's a saying, "Two is one, and one is none." I add to that, "Yes, but six is still five." All the best to you, be safe and be blessed.

Dear Elizabeth and Bill, I sure appreciate all that you do to help folks to be better prepared for emergencies! I do have a number of different ways to provide heating, lighting, etc. I have oil lanterns up the hallways and also lanterns and candelabras that hold my very heavy wax 5 hour candles of which I collected 30 over 15 years. I invested in a Goal Zero Yeti which I have already had to use for a 3 day power outage last year, butane catering stoves and six months worth of fuel. (I first found you when you guys did the rocket stove build, that was when I became a sub) The Bug Buddy heater with 4 propane tanks, a good load of wood and a closet full of Thrive Life for me and my rescues! Yes, you inspired me and I have you as my TL consultant though you may not see my real name here on youtube for safety.❤ Our 1870’s house in the Sierra Nevada has had the same oil lamps with a reflective backplate on the walls for over 100 years, nothing has changed much, right?

Yes, we live out in the country, and have been in our house nearly 47 years. Well, for about the first 15 years or so, (before they put all new wires along the road) it seemed like if the wind even blew very hard our power went out. Sometimes for as long as 10 to 12 hours. When you live on a dead end road, with just 4 houses between you and the end of the road, you're not high on their priority list. We learned quickly to keep flashlights everywhere. And we got a couple of free standing oil lamps. Then one day at a hardware store we came upon a hanging ones some what similar to yours. They don't have the mirror, just a shiny silver colored back plate, and ours are a bit taller and wider than yours. Also, one disadvantage, the oil tank base is metal, too. So you have to open it and look in to check the oil level. But the oil does last a long time, and so does the wick. It's been so many years since we hung ours in our kitchen, I can't remember. But likely my husband did use the anchor. But you had me getting up to look at ours to see if it had that second lower hole. And it does and it's not anchored there. So I'll suggest to my husband he do that. But I do love ours, it's big enough, and high enough it gives out a lot of light. About 3 years ago we got a prebuilt cabin/shed. My husband wired it for both grid power and solar. One end is for storage, but the other end is a craft/office area for me. And to be safe we've hung one out there. I also have 3 small battery operated lanterns that put out a lot of light. I keep one out in the living room in our house, one in our bedroom upstairs, and one in the hall bathroom up stairs. So we pretty much have emergency lights, throughout the house. The power goes off far more rarely in recent years. But still it feels good to be prepared. And we make sure all flashlights have working batteries at all times. I'd suggest you have a couple flashlights handy if you do have to light your lanterns in the dark. I don't really consider myself a prepper per say. But when you live out like we do, it's just kind of a way of life to be prepared, for either the power to go off, or to get snowed in, in Winter. When the Pandemic hit, and TP got in short supply, we had no issues. Since it was March, toward the end of Winter, we had a big supply, already, because we always do. And by the time we were running low, the stores had ample supplies of it! Like I say, just our way of life, out here in the country! 😊

a renter installed these. the oil and black on the walls and ceiling ruined the paint. turns out the latex paint asorbs the oil all the way down to the paper of the sheet rock. Had to re-sheet rock above where these lamps were at as well as the ceiling above them. I couldn't just wash the oil residue off and latex paint won't stick to the residue. that said these are great for tables and end tables as long as one doesn't knock them over.

If you're afraid of the glass just get metal bodied oil lanterns. Deitz makes the best and once you learn how to use a hurricane lantern they are fairly easy. They come with a hanger too, but I just sit ours on the fireplace mantle. They can be carried from room to room or taken outside and resist wind blowing out the flame though you can easily put it out yourself.
