If this was invented in medieval times crossbow would never be widely used. This basic version would have allowed anyone without training on bows to fire it. Just need the strength to pull the cord,the bolt would fly. Also way cheaper to mass produce.

Have you seen Jörg Sprave's latest inventions? He's developed a way to lower the power needed to draw an Instant Legolas while still keeping the power the same. You can now draw a 100 lb war bow with something like 60% of the force at any one time. This would make your "untrained rabble" even more effective. They'd have similar power and range to the best archers on the field.
@GamelessOne
@GamelessOne 4 жыл бұрын
I think you are overestimating the double bow setup. He only reduced the draw weight of a 30lb bow to 20lb. That's only a 1/3, or about 33%. Two bows per soldier makes it more expensive and it's also a very clumsy weapon. The strategy of going for rapid fire over power is also questionable, first off it would require many more arrows to be crafted, although they are smaller, it's still more work making that many more arrows. There's also bound to be some loss in the kinetic energy compared to a bigger arrow. All that and you still have to address the fact that the average "cheap" soldier would not be able to draw more than 70-80lbs effectively for a sustained duration, so it's an entirely invalid strategy in the age of plate armor. The magazine device might have proven itself effective in the Viking age, where armor was more expensive and plate armor wasn't common. I still believe this device would mostly have been useful for self defense against bandits or wild animals, perhaps for scouts and skirmishers in smaller battles.

@@GamelessOne Even if draw weight were to limit the size of bows for equipping a peasant levy with these, one of these in the hands of most skilled longbowmen would still be extra devastating. Speed shooters like Lars Andersen use pathetically low draw weight bows. Even the best longbow speed shooters would see this thing increase the speed they shot, because even the best of them come nowhere near as fast as modern speed shooters (they're drawing bows up to 4x heavier).
@justinbell7309
@justinbell7309 4 жыл бұрын
Also, if you can manage a 33% decrease with a war bow, that's turns a 100lb bow into drawing like a 67lb bow (easily trainable). A 120lb potentially draws like a 80lb bow. Those are much more promising numbers.
@metamorphicorder
@metamorphicorder 4 жыл бұрын
I agree that the double bow would likely have been a specialized weapon and used by actual elite groups of archers but it might have had a place. The basic idea of the repeater attachment though would have been a game changer. Archers were elite by nature and expensive to employ and tain and equip. They are expensive in both time and money. If you could increase the monetary cost and that allows you to increase the potential number of your archers, AND decrease the time it takes to make them effective then that is a tremdous investment and advantage. Even if you have to use less powerful bows you can put weaker people behind a bow and put more arrows in the air at any given moment. Accuracy isnt necessarily a win or loose proposition in all aspects of archery warfare. A hail of arrows simply needs to be generally accurate, it doesnt have to be spot on if you can double treble or quadruple the volume of your volleys per unit time, especially from a fortified position, then you can potentially mow down more soldiers, injure more horses, weigh down more shields by adding arrow weight to them. Then if you also put this in the hands of actually effective archers, using powerful bows, you have a unit of archers that can lay down serious supression fire to a charging wall of soldiers and thin out their ranks.

I think the primary limiting factor that would stop the Instant Robin Hood from being historically impactful would be ammunition supply. Mike Loades estimates England had a stockpile of about 1 to 2 million arrows for the Crecy campaign, and that had the English archers been shooting at a theoretical 8 arrows a minute, the English army would have expended the entire pre-war stockpile of arrows in half an hour. (from The Longbow) What constrained archery in open battle wasn't number of archers, it was the number of arrows they had available to them, and the popular image from Lord of the Rings where an advancing army is practically machine-gunned down by storms of arrows is impossible simply because there wouldn't be enough arrows to shoot. Jason Kingsley does mention and emphasize that the most significant use of archery was as a terror weapon on chevauchee raids, and if this device could enable more men to effectively employ archery in that setting, it could have made the raids that much more destructive to the point where it could be a difference in kind. However, that is predicated on the idea that there were enough horses and people able to effectively ride them, and that there weren't already enough skilled archers to fulfill what mounted capacity medieval armies had available. History almost never changes based on one piece of technology alone, and this device is no exception.
@cerebraldreams4738
@cerebraldreams4738 4 жыл бұрын
The arrows for this mechanism are also easier to produce and don't require as much raw material, so with the same amount of labor and materials you could easily manufacture a lot more arrows for the same price. On top of that you also have to consider the accuracy boost for untrained archers, which means that even with the same number of arrows you would still have more arrows hitting their target. In between the cheaper arrows and more accurate shooting, this could in fact change the outcome of several battles.

He reduced a 30lb recurve, fiberglass bow to 20lb, that's only about 30% and we still havn't seen how it would work with a wooden, double longbow-warbow (80-100lb) setup. Something like that would horrible to shoot though, extremely clumsy and it would take up a huge amount of space in the battle lines. The trigger feature is also a very bad idea for warbow draw weight, as it would be very hard on the limbs to keep the bow drawn for more than a few seconds. You will damage the limbs, if not outright break them.

You have understood and perfectly described why this device would have been revolutionary in Medieval times - a point that many commenters have missed. It's not about being better than master archers who've trained all their life. It's about making *anyone* a combat-effective archer in a matter of hours. It requires less training and skill than a crossbow or a musket.
@AggelosKyriou

I'm happy you pointed out the economic aspect. I always wanted to make a video about this (I have a degree in economics and have studied the history of world economy quite extensively). The effectiveness of this device would be ultimately judged by the ability of the economy and available technology to provide the "Instant Legolas", and even more importantly to provide the amount of ammunition needed to take advantage of the "spray and pray" ability of this device (ok, this is obviously more accurate than "spraying" but you get the point.) The facts are: 1) The device itself: Producing the Instant Legolas using medieval technology wouldn't be to expensive or time-consuming. Joerg has made a version using an springy arrow in lieu of a spring or rubber. Totally feasible for an average medieval carpenter. Many types of wood could be used for either part and the obvious similarities with a crossbow stock would make mass production quite effective, easy and not localized. Customization to a particular bow was the norm back in the day so they would easily work around it. 2) Ammunition/shafts: This device is designed to use crossbow-type bolts, which have an inherent economic advantage. Crossbow-type bolts are easier, faster and perhaps cheaper to make than arrows. The fact that their is no archer's paradox means that the crossbow-type bolts do not need to be adjusted for elasticity to match the power of the bow (this is called the "arrow spine"). Thus can be made in a simple lathe without a skilled worked trimming them by hand to match a standard of elasticity ("arrow spine") which differs between various bows. This also means that the ammunition would be much more suited for mass production and each archer could match them to their bow by taking into account the balance point of the bolt, its weight and perhaps its length; 3 parameters instead of 5 taken into account for bow arrows (namely, weight, balance, length, arrow spine and fletching arrangement). I excluded the type of arrowhead because that's a parameter related to the intended target, not the bow or crossbow. 3) Ammunition/Arrowheads: Steel was incredibly more expensive than it is today. High quality arrowheads would be rare and expensive. Mass production would not be easy to achieve since metallurgy was still strictly empirical, thus the number or smiths who would achieve that level of quality would be limited. Diverting smiths from making other steel implements would be quite problematic and it would do little to solve this issue. Thus I could see this device being used with lower quality arrowheads in order to take advantage of projectile volume. It should be noted that Mongol and Turkic archers of central Asia often used bone arrowheads since iron was too precious to waste on harassing arrow showers. 4) Logistics: That's the trickier aspect. The ability to train people to shoot effective projectiles so fast doesn't mean that you can easily carry around the amount of ammunition they could shoot. English archers, who had a moderate rate of fire, and even crossbowmen often run out of ammunition, simply because buying and more importantly, carrying arrows around was too expensive or was slowing down the army too much. The European road network was in bad repair (and beyond the limits of the Roman Empire it would be in still in its infancy) and effective land transport was still centuries away. For the reasons 3) and 4), I think that even if they knew about this device, they wouldn't be able to make the most out of it. Game changer? Perhaps for some years, but eventually only the army who could solve the problems 3) and 4) would eventually win the day.

One neat factor is that it can improve any archer, even a very skilled one, so it doesn't have to forgo quality for economy to be beneficial. In a war situation, the design may change slightly to have a larger magazine or a magazine that's quickly interchangeable, allowing an archer to shoot many more arrows very rapidly. Even with the relatively recreational design, a backup bow and an unskilled assistant to load it is still a very cost effective way to multiply the output of a skilled archer, both in terms of wages and in terms of skilled manpower. ... of course, your skilled super-archer does only have half the hitpoints of two skilled archers, but may have considerably higher DPS, especially with Joerg's new double-bow design, which can raise the attack power by about x1.5.

They say, the best time to start training a longbowman is with his grandfather. The Instant Robin Hood's main value is similar to the Zhuge crossbow (or crossbows in general). The amount of time required to equip an unskilled levy with this and train him to use it semi effectively is less than a longbowman by a long shot, and considerably cheaper. The volume of arrows a volley of these unleashes would be devastating too. A two-man team, one an archer with two of these, the other a shieldbearer with a pavise and braceable pole arm. Forms a line of pavises and braced polearms to effectively create mobile palisades with spikes for the archers to use as cover. The archer fires one bow, the shieldbearer reloads another. That's the first tactic that comes to mind for me with this.

Task Switching slows down any process. Jerg bow removes task switching. Alternateing between loading and looseing adds a mental delay of refocusing your hands from one task to another. The delay is compounded more for novice troops who are likely to fumble in combat. Haveing the novice troops: Entirely focus on loading 5 bolts Then Entirely focus on fireing 5 bolts Is far faster than: Load, switch task, loose, switch task, load, switch task. loose.
@guypierson5754
@guypierson5754 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe. But there isn't that reality to archey, you don't load and then loose, there is no delay between the two, to load is to loose, the delay is in indexing your arrow in your hand, but that delay is under a second. This is a very cool toy he has, but it's practical applications do not even come close to making it viable historically. In 40 seconds on a selfbow at 30 pounds, I can't tell you how many I can get off, cause I'm at home like a good boy, but I'll try to borrow a bow off one of the kids at my club when it opens again and test it. I loose 12 in under 30 seconds on my longbow. The time and expense of training archers is never about speed, it's about them needing to be able to pull 100 pound or more bows while maintaining accuracy and the stamina to continue that job for periods of time. Giving them one more thing to mess about with wont magically make them able to pull those bows. Against a man with normal clothing on, a 30 pound bow will deffo kill, might even thru and thru. But a linothorax or aketon would stop that, and they are made from linen, manufacturable by anyone with access to a needle and thread, so, again, to TL DR this: The expense of training archers is to up their draw weight and accuracy, and no fancy kit can replace years of work. Joerg made this cool toy, but to him this argument is lost because he is a weightlifter with a great modern diet, hard for him to see that the average medieval peasant may have been very tough, but not hugely strong since they didn't often get the luxury of so much food they could waste energy lifting heavy things that didn't need lifting.
@kovi567
@kovi567 4 жыл бұрын
That looks good on paper, but here is the thing: "Loading" a bow is not a separate task. Going from picking up the arrow and arriving at the loose is, preferably, a single motion. Also, keep in mind that he shot 5 arrows in 40 seconds. That is 8 seconds per shot. I'm quite rusty when it comes to archery, but even I can do better than that, including my longer than should be aiming time, and I'm quite sure he isn't that different, especially with a 35 pounder.
@chrisca
@chrisca 4 жыл бұрын
@@kovi567 Call me crazy, but he did 5 arrows in 40 seconds from pickup to finish (+3 or 4 deconds to stop the timer). Irl if you were to attack or defend you would have your "cartridge" of arrows loaded. Meaning you could take 4 or 5 enemies (maybe only a couple if they all were to wield shields and wear armor) before begining the process. Thats an insane ratio by medieval standards. On the right circunstances it would be a decisive factor on a battle. Even more, It would made horse archery easier, leading to caracole tactics in the middle ages (they get close, fire their bolts and fall back to reload).
@VladiSSius
@VladiSSius 4 жыл бұрын
@@kovi567 Nice and cool explanation but in a battle, volume fire always win. ALWAYS. While the video shows us how he load and fire all 5 arrows in 40 second, in real battle they would've loaded the arrow beforehand, essentially having 5 arrows in it ready to fire. In this scenario, everytime an enemy archer loose 1, our bowman with this device could've loosen 3 arrows, and that will certainly do more damage to the enemy ranks. And since real life don't have hitpoints, whoever kills faster, wins the battle.
@JDTN1985
@JDTN1985 4 жыл бұрын
This is basically the same debate used for "which is faster: bolt-action or single-shot firearms." Until the weapon with a magazine runs empty, it has the faster rate of fire. Once you add the amount of time it takes to reload the magazine to full, it's rate of fire drops to match the single shot weapon since you still have to load each piece of ammo into the weapons individually and operate the action of each weapon after every shot. We have a similar situation here where a bow without this device is the single shot rifle, and a bow with this device is the bolt action rifle. IMO a bow with this device would be best used like bolt-action rifles that have magazine cutoff switches. Load an arrow into the magazine after each shot so that it's always full and ready for use if/when the enemy gets too close.

The biggest benefit that this device gives, is to not only have the ability to equip it to a lesser trained soldier, but also to pre-load it with the 5-6 shots without worry of the arrows becoming a hinderence or become dislodged during travel. Essentially you are a mobile force of 5 shots at all times..imagine the ambush potential these devices would have gained. short range surprise attacks where a force of say 30 archers, was able to loose 150 arrows accurately, in very short order. Not to mention if you had multiple bows, per archer, then they could have many bows pre-loaded in wait.

Jörg already made a version that can store the energy, and THAT'S really a game changer, if it were invented 700 years ago. The biggest benefit, like you said, is the flat learning curve. In medieval times the people died like flies from diseases and other stuff and it would not stop from killing well trained soldiers. The only option you then have is to hire expensive mercenaries. You need special branches to make good, real arrows. In contrast, bolts can have half the length and be made out of the cheapest wood. Jörg used 15cm/6inch bolts with higher accuracy then the longer ones. There is a reason modern projectiles are short and chubby. They're just not as prone to get as much affected by cross winds. Short bolts you could add to slopes on your jacket without needing a big bag on your back, which makes you far more mobile. At the end of the day, it would have ended like with the Prussians and their "needle" gun. It was 3x as fast to reload as a normal muzzle loaded musket. They had few battles were they could use that advantage in their favor, till the French copied it.
@EmileVinesh
@EmileVinesh 4 жыл бұрын
Imagine if that device was already available in the mediëval times. Archers would probably have the device already loaded when they were getting ready to fight. And after the first line of archers went through their 5 arrows, the second line would shoot theirs while the first line would reload their weapons. So I'd imagine that you'd have a continuous barrage of arrows firing towards your enemy.
@holyknightthatpwns
@holyknightthatpwns 4 жыл бұрын
Archers already tended to fire all of their arrows in a fight (according to several sources, including Jason's video on archery, I believe). Arrows were pretty expensive, roughly an hour of professional work to produce each one. I doubt this would change much when people are drawing full weight bows, since they're already limited by the effort/time it takes to pull the bow.

@macedonianfighter6987
@macedonianfighter6987 4 жыл бұрын
@@holyknightthatpwns About the cost: These arrows are shorter and they have 2 flights(feathers) and no nocks,so they would be significantly cheaper and easier to produce. And you can also make them from damaged full size arrows. Archers did run out of arrows,but then they fought as infantry if necessary. So the sooner they shoot all of their arrows,the sooner they can join the rest of the army.

I think if you made this into a crossbow, it would be a more practical weapon for the Medieval Period. Assuming you are using a 100lb warbow (or heavier) as the bow limb, this device would be both more powerful than any crossbows of the period (due to the much longer draw length) and would fire much faster (due to the magazine and the fact that the 100lb bow could be drawn either by hand or by placing the crossbow down, putting you feet in the stir-up, and pulling up on the bowstring until it engages with the trigger; which I estimate could probably be done in about 4-5 seconds). So there you have it. A crossbow with a magazine, that can be fired just as fast as a normal warbow, is just as powerful as a normal warbow, and can be used by anyone with basically no training. Yeah, I would say it would have changed warfare in Medieval times. Certainly until gunpowder weapons replaced them.
@crozraven
@crozraven 4 жыл бұрын
The latest version is basically a hybrid crossbow as it could store energy too, but much easier & faster to use than most crossbows. I mean the inventor Joerg already did repeating crossbows too before instant legolas.
@Brokenlance
@Brokenlance 4 жыл бұрын
Very much reminds me of the same line of reasoning that lead kings and generals at the time of the late middle ages/ early renaissance to start equipping more and more soldiers with guns. It wasn't that the gun necessarily was the weapon to beat all weapons, but you took a cheap levy, gave them a cheap gun, trained them for a couple of weeks and now you have a soldier that can deal with 80% of battlefield obstacles.

The Romans had a machine called the polybolos which was like a repeater crossbow. You can find out more about it on Google. It worked by drawing the string back, loading the shuttle or groove then releasing the string to release the bolt, just by winding a windlass. If the Romans could do it, I am sure that they could do the same in medieval times. They were a lot cleverer than we give them credit for.
Could this device have changed medieval European history?
